Anyone on our backline has to thinking where's the hidden camera watching how ridiculous this situation is tbh
When Varane gave his NYTimes/Athletic interview he highlighted that at Manchester players are thrown in right away, while at Madrid the plan was for him to get a good enough understanding for the team and the other defenders before he started and that gave him more confidence. Jacobo walked into the field cold the other day and you could see that he didn't have any sort of idea where everybody else is standing, constantly looking over his shoulders scanning the field, but you can't look away from the ball at this level. Not for a second. Asencio got some time to slowly enter the team, but you still see him leaving his spot opening huge gaps in defense, when he makes a high speed clearance it's an eye catching highlight and gives a great impression live, but he still makes wild commitments that leave others exposed. I think that will improve with a full offseason and a healthy defense that doesn't rotate midfield players in there.
Transition defense is exposed often with luxury players up front who turns the ball over and doesn't track back. Rudiger likes to gamble so Asencio is the one who has to cover the ground and make last ditch clearances on counter. Structure looks way better when it's 4-4-2. One thing he has to improve is controlling agressiveness inside the box. He won all of them early on in the season, but that approach was still concerning. And it led to penalties vs Celta, Arsenal and nearly one in Clasico.
Against Celta Asencio made a long sliding clearance ahead of Fran Garcia that got everybody excited, but he ran all the way from another postal code to get there, completely ignoring what he was doing. I'm thinking if a player manages to get to it, both him and Fran Garcia stand there like dummies while there's kilometers of space to use. I don't think it's alarming, but i don't think he's somehow Sergio Ramos' heir like others do.
Hes a great 3rd/4th choice CB with the potential to become a starter in a few years. The worry is that the club will try get by with him as a starter immediately and refuse to buy a better CB for that reason.
Whoa there – are there really people that see him as Ramos' heir, or is this an exaggeration to get a point across (which is fine)? Serious question, because if it's the former, then I'd be beyond amazed. I have yet to see any young CB come close to the talent Ramos showed at a very young age (and I'm not saying he was faultless, far from it even, I remember his early years very well). Asencio is not Ramos' heir, not in talent nor personality. I think people need to realize that we won't see a player of Ramos' talent and overall ability and leadership qualities too often, as these are the type of players that we see once every 20-30+ years. Asencio can, as I said earlier, become a very good (squad) player and perhaps even more. But the club needs to sign a proper world class CB in the summer, period.

Haha, did you just randomly google "Asencio new Ramos" and got these results? I mean, everyone gets hype every now and then, but I can't take this seriously, sorry.
Dude, this was going on even HERE. I don't even mean it in a bad way, people hoped Vini would be the new Cristiano as well, Yamal the new Messi etc. There's a ton of "reminds me of Sergio Ramos" stuff here. What the club does in defence will tell us a lot about what they think about Asencio.
For context, it was from Man City live match thread when he had a Ramos esque tackle in a tough situation and overall great game with that early assist. No one really meant he's gonna have Ramos-esque career.
OK then, the local press called him the new Ramos, the podcasts and Blogs called him the new Ramos, immediate mentions of Ramos here about him. I guess nobody made that connection.
I'm one of those people. Let's not forget Ramos was incredibly raw and inconsistent himself the first year that he arrived to play CB. He then got shifted out to RB for a few years where he was underwhelming for me. He didn't really fulfill his promise until it was Mourinho's last year I think where he was permanently shifted back to CB. The season he cut his hair I believe.
I reckon they might sign Huijsen though I am not more than 50% certain it'd happen. He doesn't have much more experience than Asencio and both could be starters next season given Rudiger's knee issues. Only defenders RM went all in during recent years are Alaba, Rudiger, TAA, Davies (got snubbed). All big names and free agents. So yea, a CB signing this summer is like have to see it to believe it type situation.
There are talented CBs all around. Tomas Araujo is a fantastic prospect imo. Amorim will look to pair him up with Yoro asap. I like Sildillia too, Kounde clone. And these are only "prospects"; guys like Lacroix or Kalulu might emerge from very good to great CBs soon. Hopefully our scouts are doing the jobs I am sure they are paid for handsomely, and the reports they bring in are acted upon by the management instead of waiting for someone to send them a message they will run their contract to come to Madrid.
I definitely think he can be a starter and find it a bit insulting people want his ceiling to be a "Nacho" who spent chunks of his career on the bench. But with the way the club is running things, even if Dean comes, Asencio probably has that starting position or at the very least a much played 3rd CB spot locked up at this point.
It's hard to give grades to defenders in a year where we are conceding at an incredible volume compared to our better years. There have been leaks that the club expected "about 15 more goals conceded than last year" due to the situation but it's much worse than that.
I’m not sure about Asencio as starter in this RM team. He is good, but can be our Nacho role for next decade.
Showed attitude in defeat. Not sure of the potential as a player but he "stood on business" as the kids say. Future still TBD but I can't blame him at all.
Videos of Barca players telling him "you're going to jail" during the Clasico. What he is being accused of will follow him the rest of his life unfortunately. What a stupid mistake.
Raul Asencio is prosecuted for sharing s*xual images of two women, one of them being a minor. The judge has opened a trial against Asencio and the other 3 implicated former Real Madrid academy players. The recording and distributing of the sex videos took place on the 25th of June, 2023. One of the girls was only 16 years old, with the suspects including Raúl Asencio being 20 and 21 years old. As of today, the girl suffers from post-traumatic stress resulting from what happened. (Source: @partidazocope) What a mess
According to AS, a judge drops the charge of recording the sexual videos. "There is no indication that he participated in the capture of the images and therefore, it is not possible to attribute to him, not even provisionally, any participation in the possible crime." This was seen as the worst charge pressed upon him and now he has been cleared of it. However, he is still under investigation for disseminating the video to a third party.
Asensio was literally on no one's radar. Nobody was posting here last summer or fall insisting Carlo call him up, there was no pressure from the media or social media to play him, he was just languishing away in Castilla with no real prospects. Asensio is just another great example of Carlo's inherent managerial genius. He spotted the talent when nobody else did, plucked this guy out of absolute obscurity and after about a month of training has the guy ready to compete at the highest level. GOAT.
