      Mike,

Learning the "right" way is always a good thing, especially early on. At the same time however, remember you bought the damn thing to HAVE FUN.

In my experience with music they too often hit you with the technical stuff and forget the fun. Why do you wnat to play bass? For me it was to play along with the band and know/learn songs. (Also to meet hot chicks... which i was never as good at :D )

I HIGHLY recommend your using some websites etc to get the basic chords down of the song and just play along with your (loud) stereo. Little different then if you were playing a rythym guitar (except here you are just strumming one note on your bass) this way you learn the chord changes, timing, a bit of rythym etc. Once you have a few songs under your belt (think easy i.e. Ramones vs. tougher i.e. Steely Dan or Stray Cats) you'll at least have something fun to fall back on when you get sick of doing scales etc.

Another quick bit is to determine what you really NEED to know. This can depend on your style etc. I was self taught but blessed with a musically trained brother. It was cool in that he had nice basic pop songs. Knew what he wanted them to sound like, knew the chords, the progressions etc. and just worked with me. I eventually learned it by sheer experience and practice. Very DIY punk method. As I got older I have branched out (upright, more bass chords, etc.). I also acquired a pretty good ear. Its funny how that works. It started in college palying along to songs on my CD and TRYING to use TAB websites etc to show me the chords. A lot of these TAB things suck and are just wrong and I would get angry and learn them myself.

Anyway... Dont spend too much time on jazz scales or funk for example if you dont really care for it. Sure it can be great to learn but will you really use it?

Love to talk bass amigo. You ever have questions shoot me an email: chexman5@aol.com

      Rock on, Owen
