Stadium Project cost: $130 million Naming Rights: $2,000,000 per year for 15 years An endless stream of taunts surrounding their new stadium name: Priceless http://denver.bizjournals.com/denver/stories/2006/11/06/daily21.html I can see the first headline after their first home game: The Colorado Rapids come up short at Dick's... Now, if they'd only find a way to put the name on the front of their jerseys I could cry myself to sleep laughing...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! HAHAHAHAHA! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! HAHAHA! *wipes tear from eye* That just made my day!
hehehe... It's a wonderful thing to get the $2 million in sponsorship and I'm sure the name thing will die down soon enough, but wow... I didn't expect that name!
hehehe I'm not sure if it's good or bad to win the Cup at Dicks... We could call it: The Big Dick... but I think it's actually the smallest stadium in MLS, so perhaps The Little Dick is more accurate. ... Colorado's little Dicks Stadium.
Wow, and I thought the worse almost naming rights was Waste Management with the Bridgeview stadium. But this is real!!!! BTW $2 mil/year is a great deal, especially for Rapids.
*They already have a thread up at the rivalries board. *And I just had to add a pinch of salt to the wound in the RSL-Rapids thread.
There's some terrific sophomore humor over on the Rapids thread - they aren't exactly thrilled either. It has been a welcome laugh in the midst of a rough week.
Apparently Pablo had some inside info and was just trying to pantomime it.... And my initial reaction was exactly the same as Aero's. WAY too funny.
If the numbers in the article are true... good on them. Here's how the deals around MLS rank: 1. Home Depot Center - $70 million over 10 years. ($7 million per year) 2. Toronto (Bank of Montreal) - $24 million over 10 years ($2.4 million per year) 3. Dick's Sporting Goods Park - $40 million over 20 years ($2 million per year) 4. Pizza Hut Park - $25 million over 20 years ($1.25 million per year) 5. Toyota Park - $7.5 million over 10 years ($750 per year) 6. Crew Stadium - no deal. What happened at Toyota Park? Japanese are apparently very good negotiators (I'm surprised MLS isn't paying them to put the name on the park )... Crewsers? What's wrong with you? It's cool to think that 7 of 13 teams will be playing in soccer stadiums next year. Likely, 9 teams in 2008...
Now the name Little Dick really comes to life. What if the crowd isn't into the game some time, would it then be the droopy dick? Now they just need Viagra to be a co-sponsor...
I've been cruising around the boards chuckling, roaring, guffawing...but this one is the best I've seen Bravo! And this is just wicked clever. Dick's vs. Johnson's Priceless.
IIRC they had another deal lined up in Chicago for more but went with Toyota anyway. I think some of these deals have more than just stadium naming rights. Like the deal with the Rapids includes retail operations at the stadium and the retail development nearby.
I can see it now....as the CRapids come out of the tunnel, onto the field, blaring from the loud speakers at Dicks will be a song to get every fan and player pumped up for the game....hear it loud, hear it now...it's....Detachable Peni$ by King Missile. No lie, it's a real song from 1992.
