Breaking news at 11. http://www.kron.com/Global/story.asp?S=5654118 49ers break off talks with San Francisco on building a stadium. Team could move to Santa Clara or southern California. If the 49ers do want to move to Santa Clara I think we can kiss the Great America site goodbye.
You guys better pray and hope they move to SoCal. Actually, since the NFL has desperately been wanting to get back into that market it may work out that way. We'll see.....
Crap, just when we got rid of the 'San Jose A's' roadblock to a south bay soccer stadium, now this? As long as this is hanging out there, we can pretty much kiss every site goodbye...not just Great America.
interesting thought - I heard the same thing from Lew Wolff and now hearing the news tonight on the tv it makes sense
Relax. The MLS doesn't want it's teams in NFL stadiums. The Quakes wont share with the 49ers or move to Candlestick. Here's how it will work ... The Quakes can go into a new 30K seat stadium at SJSU The 49ers can go into a new 80K seat stadium next to Great America and LA can go to Hell!
When Lew mentioned football he had to be talking about SJSU. No need or reason for the 49ers to share with soccer.
The latest news now says they will stay in the bay area, and it will more than likely be Santa Clara. This just takes one option for the Quakes off the board. Lew specifically mentioned the fairgrounds and SJSU in his tv interview, and not Santa Clara.
Good news. Let's just hope that the SJ city council doesn't try to meddle in affairs and persuade the 49ers to come to San Jose instead of Santa Clara. Their thinking could be "Well if we can't get baseball....."
Lew definitely has kept any option open, saying something along the line "whoever has some land for us".
But not to LA. http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/15966138.htm "The 49ers have called the Bay Area home for our entire 60 year history," York said. "We are a part of the fabric of this region, and we intend to stay right here where we belong."
A huge sigh of relief as far as keeping the Earthquakes in San Jose proper and, even more importantly, keeping the team-name "San Jose Earthquakes" intact. However, I'd much rather that the 49ers stayed in San Francisco, the A's stayed in Oakland and the Earthquakes stay in San Jose (which the Quakes most likely will, at this point), as that's where all three teams belong. At least John York seems to understand the need for not rebranding his team to something like "Santa Clara 49ers" or whatever - a good lesson for Wolff in regards to both the A's and the Quakes. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
If Lew Wolf meant to say the San Jose State Football team, he would have said the SJS FTeam. But he didn't. He did mention they were in the audience. The very fact he said "football" team means to me a/ he considering all options b/ he is considering a Pro Football team ( though last night I thought it would be RAIDERS. c/ San Jose State is till an option, but you never really know if he gets a better deal elsewhere d/ wherever it is, Lew Wolff would pick a spot where he knows he can get maximize Real Estate around the property. Look at PacBellPark. The biggest waste was that the owners didn't own the entire neighborhood around the park. Now there are businesses, lofts etc all over the place. THAT is where the money is. And that is what Lew Wolff is looking at. Maximize potential for revenue with maximum ownership & control of surrounding land around the proposed stadium.
I think by now it's well known that cohabitation of pro soccer and NFL football doesn't work. So I don't really think he's thinking about the Niners. I wonder though if Santa Clara would have room for both a soccer and a football stadium? Parking / transportation infrastructure, etc. could be shared.
If we are to believe that MLS is requiring the Krafts to find a smaller SSS venue for the Revolution and we know that MLS is working with Wolff on their efforts here, I think we can be reasonably assured that Mr. Wolff's reference to football last night did not include the NFL. The timing of the 49ers announcement also to me was very curious, given the event and media attention focused on the Quakes and their quest for a venue. Astute observers will recall that the 49ers made an announcement reserving the Great America site as their "second option" when the Wolff led Quakes made an effort to discuss their interest in sites a few months back....
I'm smelling the germination of an SF/SJ MLS battle royal. If MLS is smart, they flip this into a new 30,000 seat Candlestick. I think the city government is so pissed off at the Yorks' whining that they might call their bluff.
Interesting comments, makes me ponder. I may want to add that last night after most of the interviews were done, Lew looked slightly anxious & nervous. He probably was trying to figure out the next chess move with each potential opportunity.
Yep. *sigh* But I fear it's not to be. The A's in Fremont. The 49ers in Santa Clara. I just really, really hope we'll see the Quakes in San Jose. I think I'm already out as an A's fan now. I was never a 49ers fan, but definitely not if they move. I really want my Quakes to stay right here!
this news was a punch in the stomach last night after getting home from the office opening...all i could think of is: there goes our site. one step forward, two steps back
you want a team don't you? Frankly anywhere in the greater south bay area for the Quakes wouldn't be so bad. If its SF, then beggers can't be losers one option, no Quakes 2nd option Quakes in SF. Since Chuck Reed was a no show last night at Lew Wolff party, hopefully the winers didn't vote for him. Otherwise your Karma just got served back at you.
As a Santa Clara resident, I think this is fantastic news for the city. However, as a Quakes fans is really upsets me that this site is good enough for the NFL, but wasn't good enough for MLS or AEG to seriously consider. Watching the news last night reminded me of the arguements we made in favor of this site years ago. The exact same words were spoken...Location, easy access, public transporation, infrastructure, a city willing to work with the organization by providing basically free land, synergy between Great America, the hotels, and convention center...etc... So again, if all of these things are good enough for the NFL, then why in the hell wasn't it good enough for AEG and MLS? I have always been impressed with the "Can do/Will do" attitude by the city of Santa Clara. The news of the 49ers proves this point. I only wish AEG and MLS had taken them seriously when Santa Clara was telling them..."We can do this, and we will do this". Bummer...but, at least when my COWBOYS come to town I won't have to drive up to "The Stick".
