Damn, nothing like Worlds Collide. "Pain is temporary, truth is absolute" They were probably the first hardcore band that I really got into seeing live. Missed all the early 80s and '88 stuff - bought the tapes after fact but wasnt around for those bands. Was hitting my early teens right as the early 90s kicked in. Never realized how many people on BS were into hardcore. Plenty of folks like Fugazi (as I do), but you dont see Worlds Collide and Damnation references every day.
I was definitely surprised the first time minor threat came up how many people were talking about how they used to be edge. I just got the damnation live on some radio station songs the other day. HEAVY AS HELL
another thread where I don't even understand what's being discussed. stumbling over to my home, the BB drunk thread!
Awesome, but the songs are too depressing. "We All Fall Down" might work for a game against a team with Carlos Ruiz on it, though Considering "Nic Fit" and "Oscar's Eye" for this week. Two of the absolute all-time classic DC songs, even if "Oscar's Eye" is really post-hardcore. And something by Scream. Most of their stuff gets me so fired up I want to go out and break something.
Live? Dare I ask it? Could we get them to play live? Bring them out of "hiatus?" How about Bob Mould? Can we get him to play/ Pleasepleaseplease?
Well, they were Vancouver, but once they finally came east, they actually played with the Dischord bands. I waited a year for them to come to the East Coast, and finally saw (with then Minor Threat opening) at Benny's in Richmond. So you could do "Golden Shower of Hits" with footage of Bobby kicking Jay Heaps, of Tino going mafioso and grabbing Twellman by the back of the neck in '02, of Joshua bulldogging Dempsey in the '04 conference final...
I might go with Take It Back by Gray Matter - probably my favorite of their songs and it fits cause the Revs got the ECF last year and DCU is trying to take it back. Also from that era - Swann Street by 3 would be great as well. And how about something off of State of the Union comp? Kingface's Dirty Wings, or even Ameri-dub by Scream.
greatscott has exceeded their stored private messages quota and can not accept further messages until they clear some space. so I'll say it here - I'm interested I really haven't heard much DC music. ANd virtually no harDCore stuff. When I was young enough to be clubbing I was into good hair metal and spent most of my nights in Baltimore at Hammerjacks, etc. It was too scary to go to downtown DC
I know the High-Back Chairs aren't punk, but it would still be great to hear some. And they're still Dischord... -Patricia
Since we're talkin' about music with an "edge"... how's about a little love for Neil Sedaka? He also looks good in the Black & Red! RAWK!
HAAH i figured no one would know what I was talking about if i mentioned barfight. Ive got a bunch of live barfight footage somewhere.
PS. I'll make a bunch of mix cd's for people. Good call on Darkest Hour and Majority Rule. I have about 6 or 7 bands to put on it so far.
Reading back, I realized it was DOA that I was thinking of. They shared a "Let 'Em Eat Jellybeans" comp with Circle Jarks, and--since I wasn't exactly straight-edge at the time --those details are blurry. I've red-carded myself: my first this year for a post that doesn't involve Clarence Goodson (not harDCore) or his mother (VERY harDCore).
I know Avail is known for being from Richmond, but I am pretty sure they spent some time living up in DC
Reston, VA to be exact. They all live in RVA now, but Tim and others grew up in Reston when it wasnt as much of a traffic clusterf*ck.... How about some Crispus Attucks on the mix? Virginia Black Lung? Ok, now I'm getting a bit obscure.
I've posted the music playlist for this week. There were lots of great suggestions here that I ultimately didn't use, but I hope it meets with everyone's approval.
The fact that you put 'Drink Deep' at the end of the playlist has been duly noted! Gracias. P.S.: It's not like I don't hear that song with some regularity, its just that hearing it at a SE's tailgate puts it on a whole other level! P.P.S.: Great call on the Scream selection!
Did any of you guys catch "American Hardcore" while it was playing at the E Street Theaters? -It was pretty worthwhile, and featured a lot of stuff about the DC hardcore scene back in the day.
