Re: Copa America - Travel, Tips, Hotel, Things To Do... Aeropuerto Internacional Simon Bolivar Caracas, Venezuela (Actually, about 30-45 minutes from Caracas) This first picture is from "Cerro Avila", you take the cable car in Caracas and go up. Once you are up you can see Caracas on one side and the caribbean sea & the airport on the other side.

Re: Copa America - Travel, Tips, Hotel, Things To Do... Does anyone know if Chavez has put restrictions on American direct flights to Caracas? I've tried several websites for direct flights in July 2007 from NYC to CSC and they all have at least 1 stop. This was not the case earlier in the year. I then saw a blog dated earlier in the year that spoke about Chavez looking to put some type of restrictions on int'l flights from the US?? Anyone know anything about this?? Here's the blog: http://blogs.usatoday.com/sky/2006/02/aa_continental_.html The flight should be no more then 4.5 hours….
Re: Copa America - Travel, Tips, Hotel, Things To Do... Yeah direct flights have stopped. You have to make a connection now.
Re: Copa America - Travel, Tips, Hotel, Things To Do... I haven't heard anything about that. I know that there was some type of restriction from the US on Venezuela because of an inspection from more than 10 years ago they rated the main airport as "B" or whatever it was but that was changed. Chavez doesn't have any type of restrictions. If that was the case, the first thing he would have done is stop selling oil to the US and sell it all to China instead. U.S. Raises Venezuela's Safety Ranking April, 2006 http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=1873476&CMP=OTC-RSSFeeds0312' CARACAS, Venezuela Apr 21, 2006 (AP)— U.S. aviation authorities upgraded Venezuela's safety ranking on Friday, averting a ban that would have blocked most U.S. airlines from flying to the country. The U.S. Embassy in Caracas said in a statement that the "Federal Aviation Administration is raising the safety rating of Venezuela to Category 1." The decision came after an FAA team visited Venezuela late last month to examine Venezuelan airlines' planes and procedures within the country's aviation authority. The FAA had recognized the "efforts to improve the level of aviation safety oversight in Venezuela" made by the National Aviation Institute, or INAC, the statement said. The Venezuelan government had protested its lower Category 2 ranking, which prohibited Venezuelan airlines from flying their own planes to the U.S. or from launching new services such as expansions in routes. The restrictions, in place since 1995, forced Venezuelan airlines to rent planes and crew for flights to or from the United States.

Re: Copa America - Travel, Tips, Hotel, Things To Do... Hello, I haven't posted in a while so I don't expect many or even some of yo to remember me, but I am from Maracaibo... so I will try to post a few things to help anyone out. First, as someone said, Maracaibo is not really a touristy type of city. But if you're like me, touristy cities arent so apealing... Ask me a question and I'll try to guide you About hotels, the very best are Maruma and Hotel del Lago, followed by Kristoff and El Paseo. Maruma is the best, but kind of far away. Hotel del Lago is right next to the lake, right next to Lago Mall (probably one of the best malls, next to Sambil), and in on the most expensive areas. Both are used by National teams and clubs when playing in Maracaibo. The Kristoff hotel is a very good hotel, used by urguayan temas (both NT and Nacional). its in mid city and very close to legendary watering hole, saritas... a generational place to drink cheap beer, highly frequented by locals of all economic stratus. Music: vallenato, salsa and reguaton... El Paseo, is next to del Lago, and is quite swell, its main atraction is a rotating restaurant on the top floor with a fantastic view of teh city. ---- Shopping centres: Sambill. Like the rest of this popular chain of malls in venezuela, it is the biggest and has the most exclusive stores... Lago Mall. Also good, smaller. Galerias. More of a popular place, it has an ice skating rink... very very very close to the stadium. Doral center. all right --- Here is an insider tips: - Visit the old city (casco historico) during the day... REALLY IMPORTANT to not look like a tourist here (a bit dangarous since it is a "popular" and popullated area). In here, it is good to visit la calle carabobo, teh churches... for a traditional meal, go to The Zaguan restaurant. El callejon de los pobres should be avoided unless you feel adventerous and are in the mood for a real cheap, really crowded market. -
hey people, ill try to post some stuff about teh stadium here in maracaibo... for now, i leave a link to some videos that might give you some idea about the stadium and the fans here in maracaibo http://www.youtube.com/groups_videos?name=UAMaracaibo there ares ome clips form last libertadores and local games... over the south side (the oposite from the electornic screen) there is a new grada being built... it should be up for libertadores 2007 facts about the stadium: high temperatures, high winds (from north to south)

Copa America takes shape.
what venue is it gonna be used to sell the tickets? online? I dont want to make the trip without tickets man..
i think richar paez will call those new euro/venezuelan guys that have come out recently like that guy from bilbao, they are like another 3 in spain and several others in portugal, so who knows maybe in copa america well see eurozuela!!!
I have no doubt that they are going to sell tickets online because is in the best interest of the people organizing the tournament to facilitate buying tickets to the games. We just don't have that information right now.
How does one get around Venezuela, from city to city, during the Copa? By bus? Also--would it be safer to use that beach town in the East as a home base? Essentially, could anyone let us know in a non-paranoia way where NOT to go in terms of crime, just as you would in any major city in the U.S. This would be great if we could get a sizable contingent of fans to go from the U.S.--sort of thumbing our noses at both our "regimes". Thanks.
I read somewhere that conmebol sold this right to a company from brasil called traffic. I think that traffic was the same company that was in charge in peru, so we might see the same problems
More likely than not is going to happen. One of the main reasons is the Americans fans, Venezuela must know that by selling the tickets online is more likely that american fans will go to the tournament (and immigrants in the US)
