love the fact that brazil finally rises from the dead. hope the final is usa vs brazil.

    also:
"Australia have been drawn against Olympic champions USA, 2004 Asian Champions DPR (North) Korea and strong European nation Denmark at the eight-nation tournament which is the richest in women’s football."

is there a $$$ prize for the winners? and which are the other $$$ tournaments in women's football as is suggested by the article.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- North Korea pulled out of an international women's soccer competition this month in South Korea, citing a "complex" situation, organizers said Tuesday, in an apparent reference to the country's nuclear test.

North Korea had been scheduled to participate in the 2006 Peace Queen Cup Korea from Oct. 28-Nov. 4, but a South Korean businessman acting as an agent for the North's team told organizers Monday that the North's participation would be difficult, according to Huh Kyung-rak, an official of the organizing committee.

He cited that the situation is complex," Huh said. "I think it's because of the North's nuclear test."

North Korea announced Monday it successfully tested a nuclear bomb.

The inaugural event to be held in six South Korean cities. Without North Korea, seven teams are to compete: the U.S., Brazil, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Italy and South Korea.

Excellent! I was worried the whole tournament would be cancelled bcuz of N. Korea's definitely unpeaceful behavior. I wonder if CNN knows of these latest developments?

SEOUL: DPR Korea have pulled out of the Women’s Peace Cup 2006, announced the tournament’s Organising Committee recently.

The withdrawal of DPR Korea has reduced the presence of Asian teams in the tournament, which features five of the top-10 women’s teams in the world, to two – hosts Korea Republic and Australia.

DPR Korea’s pull-out decision was conveyed through informal channels to the Pyongyang-based PyungHwa Motors.

“The DPR Korea FA is dealing with the Organising Committee through PyungHwa Motors and informed us on October 9 that their team would not be able to join the tournament in Korea Republic,” Han Rheem, manager of the International Division of the Organising Commitee, told www.the-afc.com.

Rheem said the Netherlands women’s team would be replacing DPR Korea. “The Organising Committee has decided to invite the Dutch women’s team to take up DPR Korea’s place.”

It can't help that three of the North Korean players have been suspended following an altercation with the referee in tournament in July. I don't recall all the specifics but the goalie kicked the ref and she's out for a year.

You can find that video online of the goalie kicking the ref. Its nuts.

A peace cup without the peacemaking. Brilliant. The name should be changed to "well we tried to bring Korea together but now its just a trip to Asia for some Western nations."

I'm not sure that is a compliment! And no offense to Heather but I wouldn't put her on a page with Lilly as one of the best American players. There are at least a handful that would be more worthy most notably Wambach.

That's why I posted it. I'm a Mitts fan but I know there are many on this board who would object to her being called one of the best players much less having "extraordinary skills". I can just see all the eyes rolling.

Hmmm, I'm thinking that there might be a language barrier at work here. The Maria Sharapova of soccer would be a nice compliment - she's pretty and she's got game. Kournikova, a back handed compliment at best and I don't think that's what they intended.

There may be some tongue in cheek there, I don't know. They may have included Mitts in there for promotional purposes because of her looks, sure. However, I'm a Mitts fan because I think she does have game and for promoting women's soccer to a male soccer world, her looks do not hurt. Sure they could have put Abbey, Scurry, Wagner or any other star player in the US next to Lilly. They don't need to use Mitts to promote the women's game to guys like me because I love the game at all levels and I follow the WNT because of the quality of soccer and they represent my country in a sport that I have played all my life and love, but if it can promote the game to fans in Korea or anywhwere else by putting Heather Mitts on the marquee, and if that's what will put more fans in the seats I just say it's all good.
