Re: Your favorite Wine? (AKA, the Wine? thread, part 2) Opened a bottle of Sandeman's 10 year old tawny - a bit disappointing The 20 year old Ferreira that I'd just finished was a LOT better. Sandeman's quality is a bit disappointing, to be honest, although its got the best tour of all the port lodges in Porto. And the best promotional materials.
Re: Your favorite Wine? (AKA, the Wine? thread, part 2) Case delivered - I'll probably open up one soon and cellar the rest. Will let you know if it warrants the 96 rating.
Re: Your favorite Wine? (AKA, the Wine? thread, part 2) Had a good New Zealand Pinot Noir -- Oyster Bay. About $18 a bottle, tasted like a $30 bottle.
Re: Your favorite Wine? (AKA, the Wine? thread, part 2) You know, part of the problem of trying to buy a birth vintage for someone is that they were born in an absolutely awful year. Bah.
Re: Your favorite Wine? (AKA, the Wine? thread, part 2) I am not a wine enthusiast. I am, However, a Basque enthusiast, so may I suggest to you a Basque White called Txakolin or Txakolina. (pronounced CHA KO LEEN) I believe it is made only in The Basque Country. There is also a special way to pour it, where you start with the bottle close to the glass and quickly pull the bottle away from the glass to full extension. You can get them here in the States. Each Province of Euskadi (The Basque Country) thinks they have the best one. I am partial to the ones from Vizcaya. If you are interested, I'll find some Bodegas names.
Re: Your favorite Wine? (AKA, the Wine? thread, part 2) It's rarely awful everywhere on the same year, though. So maybe I don't do as much Bordeaux for my 2004 child (or include just a limited number of the better wines from that vintage), but there are other regions that had a good 2004 (Napa, Southern Rhone, Brunello di Montalcino, Chile, Barossa Valley, Oregon).
Re: Your favorite Wine? (AKA, the Wine? thread, part 2) True............except that California 1984s are almost all past maturity now and 1984 was also a singularly bad year for all of France. (I think Parker gave his highest 84 ranking to a d'Yquem, for ********'s sake, and it was only 87!) If this was for someone born these days - obviously not a worry. And besides, generally the top growths produce good wine no matter what the year in Bordeaux. Except 1984.
Re: Your favorite Wine? (AKA, the Wine? thread, part 2) I have been asked by one of my in-laws to help sell a bottle of wine for her on the 'net. I will not post here, do not want to be accused of capitalism. I do not know how or where to value this wine, or even to find out about it, as they made seem this a special "bottle". Anyway, I thought I would ask the S.O.A.K. and see what you guys could do. it is a : 1995 Chateau Lynch Bages Grand Cru Classe Pauillac Grand Vin 1.5 Litre Should I set a reserve that is high? is this thing a glorified vinegar? thanks.
Re: Your favorite Wine? (AKA, the Wine? thread, part 2) It's garbage. Send it to me and I'll ensure that it's properly disposed of. Actually, a 750 ml bottle of that vintage of that wine would retail around $100.00, so double it for a 1.5 l. Why sell it? Do they not drink wine?
Re: Your favorite Wine? (AKA, the Wine? thread, part 2) BTW, They thought this may sell for $1,000, are they crazy?
Re: Your favorite Wine? (AKA, the Wine? thread, part 2) Yecch. If that's the case, that bottle would be wasted on them. It's truly one of France's best wines.
Re: Your favorite Wine? (AKA, the Wine? thread, part 2) Lastly, is there a guide, sort of like "Beckett" for baseball cards for bottles of wine?
Re: Your favorite Wine? (AKA, the Wine? thread, part 2) I was kidding, they love wine, but they want to sell this one. Maybe they bought as an investment.
Re: Your favorite Wine? (AKA, the Wine? thread, part 2) There are tons of sites online. http://erobertparker.com/ and http://www.winespectator.com are two of the best. Unfortunately, both are pay sites to get the real reviews.
Re: Your favorite Wine? (AKA, the Wine? thread, part 2) WINESPECTATOR had a free membership until Oct.31, so lucky me. here is what they said: 1995 Château Lynch-Bages Pauillac 750 ml. Re: Your favorite Wine? (AKA, the Wine? thread, part 2) does the "Grand Vin" or the " Grand Cru Classe" make it special or a special edition. is this maybe a reserve?
Re: Your favorite Wine? (AKA, the Wine? thread, part 2) http://www.epicurious.com/drinking/wine_dictionary/entry?id=6603 http://www.epicurious.com/drinking/wine_dictionary/entry?id=6599 http://www.epicurious.com/drinking/wine_dictionary/entry?id=6600 Only certain vineyards are allowed to put Grand Cru on their labels. Any vineyard can call their wine Grand Vin.
Re: Your favorite Wine? (AKA, the Wine? thread, part 2) No - Bordeaux doesn't do "reserves" and similar type varying wines within a vintage (though they do have 2nd and 3rd labels, but the name is entirely different. Those are just terms applied to that particular winery back in 1855. 6 Magnums of 1995 Lynch-Bages went for $118 each last year at auction: That vintage received a 94 from Wine Spectator: The problem is, however, that if your folks are box wine drinkers, very few people are going to trust that the bottle has been properly cellared. It may very well be vinegar by now, or it may still fetch a hundred or two.
Re: Your favorite Wine? (AKA, the Wine? thread, part 2) This bottle is not a very special reserve or special edition of this wine is it? Like I said , they thought this was going to be around $1000.
Re: Your favorite Wine? (AKA, the Wine? thread, part 2) Repped. you were a great help. I actually learned alot. now I have the problem is that they have unrealistic expecatations and when it does not sell as high as they think, of course they will kill the messenger. I hope they did not pay more than what they will get back.
Re: Your favorite Wine? (AKA, the Wine? thread, part 2) Did not see your post. Now the people who owned have all the modern trappings, but they like wine like most people like wine-- because they think it makes them rich. So they buy the gizmos, but never really learnor seek more knowledge than what their snobby friends tell them. I know this a generalization.
Re: Your favorite Wine? (AKA, the Wine? thread, part 2) The thing is, some wines actually CAN make a good return on an investment. Prices on certain wines have risen a great deal higher, and a great deal faster, than the S&P - but there's no guaranties, no easy investments, and difficulties in preserving the merchandise. Which is why very few people purchase wine as an investment to re-sell at a profit.
