I applaud all of you who wore red, but the scarves were still out of line IMHO. We left ours at home and I didn't see anyone else wearing non-red MLS ones. My purpose is not to rag on you guys specifically, but this discussions' gone on quite a bit elsewhere on BigSoccer, the USASupporters Yahoo group, etc etc -- and just about everyone else "gets it" that you leave the club gear away (or if you MUST do it, wear your club jersey UNDERNEATH your US jersey or equivalent) while the national team is playing. It also makes you less of a target to get jeered by rival support, or other people who would rather not see club stuff. It just ends up being a distraction when we all should be concentrating on getting behind the Yanks.
Re: Re: So who's the jackass who brought a SYRIAN flag, of all things, to this game? damn, and to think...i was going to wear my the lord of the rings: the two towers t-shirt to see a dollar matinee of star wars: episode II - attack of the clones..whew, glad i saw this before i left.
Lowbrow nazi smack? How predictable and ordinaire... Here's an idea. Tie a yellow-ribbon around your neck and get your boyfriend to kick the chair. Defending Axis Alex won't exactly score you many points with readers that have an IQ greater than a traffic cone. Don't push 'em. These dittoheads can't even differ from supporting the troops and supporting ole 5-to-4.
I really don't care if people bring in different flags. Hell bring a nazi flag if you like, this is America and that's your right. We protect idiots with poor taste and judgement, that's our way. It would however be nice if people would show up with an actual American flag every now and then.
Before I read Finnegan's post, I thought this was a poor attempt at a political message. For a little while, I tried to see if I could find Michael Moore in the stands -- closest I could find was the Sam's Army supporter in the left side of the screen in the 2nd row (side note - where the hell did he find a jersey that big?!?). I remember one or two years ago there was a multitude of threads that delt with 2 fans that decided to wear their Crew yellow to a couple of nats games. One picture had them dressed in yellow, and glaringly obvious, in a sea of red. (I think Andy Mead, the Magpie, or maybe fidlerre might have a link to the picture and please post if you do...) From those past posts, I've learned a couple things: 1) Wear a Nats jersey or red to a match. 2) It is permissible, though not encouraged, to wear a club scarf. 3) It was up to the supporters at the match to correct any problems. In light of this, try to place a Syrian, Palestinian, Israeli, French, Canadian, etc. flag up in front of the Northend at Crew Stadium on July 6th when the nats play Paraguay and it WILL come down. Remember that the protection to free speech is granted by the government, therefore individuals don't give a rat's SS about your right to free speech!!
So is your right to property. So is it ok for me to beat you up and take your money? Playing with the gimp.
There seems to be a lot of rules. Where do I stand if I was going to the Wales game. Say I want to take a Welsh Flag into the Sams Army section, is that bad? It's only a friendly and I would be wearing my Nats Jersey anyway and would probably want them to win, I hardly know the Welsh team now.
Make up your mind which team your there to support. American soccer, where else can you wear the opposing teams colors in the supporters section? What a fvcking joke! Its like the Special Olympics it doesn't matter who wins as long as you cheer for both teams, or in some cases teams or countries who aren't even on the pitch.
I prefer the US team but I moved from Wales so if I was going, I'd take a Welsh flag too even though I always wear a US jersey. It's only an exhibition!!! If people don't like it too bad. Anyway, I buy tickets to US games when a lot of Americans don't even care!
Seriously. After seeing some pics of the fans at this game, I think they should have hung the national flag of Fatassistan at the Venezuela game. Get some lipo, for christ's sake.
Can anyone else think of anything more ironic than an American telling the rest of us how to be proper footy fans. How long have you followed football for, 5 years?
So if he wasn't an American, it would be ok? Those Americans cant possibly know anything about soccer..
I'm more offended by the MUFC jersey myself. I'd 100 times rather see any US team club jersey than one of those monstrosities.
A) So you're telling me that wherever your from it's common practice to hang the flag or wear the colors of the opposing team in a supporter's section? B) You're speaking English, you live in America, you my friend are just about as American as he is, especially considering he seems to be showing plenty of Italian pride. Get over it.
Soccer is an American invention. As I've noted elsewhere on Bigsoccer, Columbia historian Milton Stamish* meticulously demonstrated that soccer was invented in 1819** by retired General Morgan Lewis in a cow pasture in upstate New York. *See American Journal of History (July 1975) ** However, other scholars trace the origins of the game back roughly 75 years earlier, also to a cow pasture in upstate New York. See Prof. Thaddaeus Jones' The Real American Football Doubleday, 1967.
Ben, personally, I'm opting for less of me, and using your earlier cut as additional motivation. Of course, that shirt is the inexpensive version of the cursed '98 strip. Probably time for it to go, but what does the guy who's not sure he really wants a Sam's Army shirt get in red that isn't ManU, 'Pool, or the old crap Seattle shirt?
