Speaking of Cruyff, I've lost track of him. What's he doing these days? One reason I ask is because when he left DC years ago after playing for the Dips he said he would like to come back and coach a team in the US some day. (Of course, this was before Barca and big bucks came his way.)
nah....Dallas....hot in July...??.where ever did you get that idea.... side note....too many teams in MLS play low pressure on the road (FCD is one of them) drives me fcukin' crazy....not the way to sell the game in the USA...and generally the audience, or potential audience is not sophisticated enough to apprecite a crap game being justified just by getting the three points...the commish and all GM's should get together and tell the coaches they will not accept this crap.....that they will fire immediately any proponents of it.....CC is one of the worst offenders.....did it saturday at Chicago and FCD only came out of their shell when they got 2-1 down....too many negative coaches in the world (many in MLS) and we just saw it in the WC with Sven, Peckerman and others....Mooch was another proponent when coaching Colorado a few years back....I think just about all the Rapids vs Burn games ended 1-0 either way in those days...
He makes grand pronouncements for a buck. He can't coach a club team due to his health but should be all right for a few Nat matches ... to the US, Johan would be worth more as a trainer than a coach anyway .. and he's not that bad of a coach either.
How about Claudio Gentile? He would be a killer coach for the USA! At least he could hack his way into a final! Wasn't he the one who said "this isn't a little girls game"? On second thought, he may not be the right man to coach a soccer team in the USA. I'd love to see him as women's coach! https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=385241
Here's someone that I don't think has been mentioned, but what about Frank Yallop. I know he signed with LA not too long ago, but he brings a unique blend of experience; understands US players, has coached in the region and played at a higher level in the UK. And the biggest thing is that he might be able to get the best out of Landy Cakes.
Background: during the Crew/LA Galaxy game today, a very tan (fake-bake, anyone?) Wynalda was talking about perhaps Yallop coaching the USMNT, and taking Kinnear w/ him. They made it sound like it was a legit rumor/possibility. Personally, I hope it doesn't happen. MLS needs quality coaches like Yallop and Kinnear, and there are other guys who are excellent candidates...
My $.02 I'd like to see Thomas Dooley get the nod. He coached in Germany, still lives in the US and is involved in youth soccer. He's also has the benefit ofbeeing familiar with the MLS and some of the current players. Wouldn't mind seeing and Lothar as his assistant.
I'm surprised to even be hearing rumors about Yallop and Kinnear. I mean they are great club coaches but have they been proved at the national team level? Yallop didn't qualify with Canada and Kinnear is fairly new as a coach. Besideds , I was under the impression Sunil Gulati wanted a big time coach for the USMNT? I mean if this is the case, what is the difference between them and Bruce Arena other than maybe a change of scenery? Also will the USSF gurus really want the USA head coach to be a Canadian/Englishman?
Coaches are professionals. They coach against former employers all the time, in all sports. The only people who seem to have a problem against coaches moving on to other coaching jobs are fans.
We need a guy with WC or other high level experience.Waldo is an idiot to blast Arena for a Month and suggest another MLS guy.
Re: My $.02 I think the reason he lives here is because he kept getting fired from his German coaching gigs. So, unless I'm wrong, I'd rather we pass on the Dooley option.
Re: My $.02 My thinking is that the last team looked restricted and needed more freedom to create, which I think is what Juergen(sp?) did for Germany. I'm hoping the team expresses itself with creativity if its given more liberty. Maybe the new coach, Lothar or Dooley, will take more risk & trick up the formations and lineups.
Peter Nowack is the only MLS coach I'd give serious consideration to for the Nats job. Yallop, maybe, but he hurt his chances by leaving to coach the Canadians. Bradley? Highly over-rated and, besides, he's one of Bruce's posse. Nicol? He's a Brit and the Revs always go ultra conservative in the playofs. He's kind of the America's answer to Peckerhead--I mean man.
If Sigi is on a short list of coaches, it makes you wonder why LA let him go a few years ago for Sampson. I always thought Sigi was a good coach and he has some expeirience with the youth teams I believe, why not him? Anyway, who else is out there? He knows the whole system and is a creative coach.
