Is this news? I was under the impression that it's been more or less a given that we will get the 2018 World Cup, ever since we lost out for this World Cup to Germany. 2010 in South Africa, 2014 in the Americas and 2018 back in Europe, with England as the rubberstamp candidate.

Yep, as I understood it we'd not be challenged by a major european country next time the WC was due in Europe.

Would be good for us to get the WC - bring the football back where it belongs. Hopefully Wembley will be done by then :( but all the facilities will have been completed by then because of the 2012 olympics so we should have good stadiums.

Well we've got the infrastructure in any case. Wembley, the Olympics stadium, Old Trafford, the new Anfield, Ashburton Grove, St James' Park, the Stadium of Shite, Stamford Bridge, Villa Park ... our infrastructure, thanks to the Taylor Report and Premiership finances, is probably the best in the world for a major international football tournament. Look at the amount of money the Germans had to spend before they could count themselves up to scratch - in our case, that would simply not be necessary, we're good to go now.

I haven't seen this myself, but somebody here at work told me that because S. Africa is in so far behind in preparations and organization, S. California is being considered as an emergency alternate for 2010. Anybody else heard anything?

So, what stadiums can be used?

    Wembley
    Old Trafford
    Ashburton Grove
    St James' Park
    the Stadium of Light
    City of Manchester Stadium
    Villa Park
    Stamford Bridge
    Anfield

I am excluding the Olympic stadium cause it doesn't seem to be going to become a football stadium after the Olympics, and Stanley Park cause whether or not Liverpool can afford it is a bit questionable. If you want to include the whole of UK you can include Celtic Park, Hampden Park, Ibrox Stadium and the Millennium Stadium. That seems to be more than enough.

Let's never mention the concept of using other stadiums around the UK again.

by 2018 there will be a load of new stadiums.
12 years into the future a whole load of new venues will be available.
pointless to guess what stadiums would be used in a 2018 cup .

I think that most of the stadiums will become updated anyway, even by then stadiums such as COMS might need a bit of modernising if needed and be made bigger depending on how many new stadiums are built and how modern they are

For the Olympics, it's inconceivable that we'd share a World Cup bid with the Welsh or Scots, what exactly would be in it for us? We simply don't need them.

The thing is FIFA would not allow another joint bid, certainly not with three teams and definately not with just using one or two stadiums in the other countries.

The more relevent questions is what's in it for Scotland and Wales?

Did wonder why they'd left that quote in there, fair do's for the Olympics but no non-English stadia for the WC.

Any truth in the rumour Africa may pull out of 2010? Would we bid if they did?

As I said, FIFA will not allow joint bids and especially not one with three teams.

So Wales and Scotland would get to have the WC in their country without their team being there.... lovely thought isn't it?
