    Almost foolish

The coach is fortunate that didn't come back to bite him in the derriere. They were down 3-0 with half an hour left before the expulsions. It certainly wouldn't have been inconceivable.

Well good luck anyway. I'd love to see LDA knock off the Mexican sides.

I have to say that, going into this game, I thought the arguments about playing both games in CR had been rendered pointless, as there was no way the revs could beat this team 4-0.

    I was wrong.

The Revs(not just the fans) were shafted by ownership.

They showed a lot tonight, even if LDA wasn't playing their # 1 squad. Actually, the Revs didn't play 4 probably starters, either. JMM, Kamler, Heaps and Llamosa all started the game on the bench, and only Kamler played at all. Good effort by the team.

    Whatever, it's over now.

Don't get me wrong, good luck to LDA. They deserved the series.

Very impressive effort by the team. It might be the kind of experience that they can use as a rallying point.

As for the second goal, I thought Harris headed it off the post and collected the rebound himself. Or was it Twellman on the header, as someone posted?

I'm pretty sure it was Twellman. Harris was right beside him, but Twellman got his noggin to it before it reached Wolde. A very nice shot, but he got the post. Harris kept moving, though, and got as easy a goal as he could ask for.

if the revs had had a home game this might have been a different series. without laying blame, it's just a shame.

    Why not lay blame?
Tonight proved we could have won this tie, if the ownership hadn't sold us down the river.

The goalie just got a hand on it, deflecting the header into the post. Twellman looked good, with that play, the pk, megging the CR defender, and he easily put away his chance on Sunday (the "offside" goal), as well as drawing a number of fouls near the edge of the box.

    Good showing lads

Way to comeback Revs, two games in Costa Rica is more like a punishment than a series, you showed up and almost pulled it off. Which brings me to another point, when are we going to stop getting F***ED in Mexico and Central America?

Your not the first team and you won't be the last.

3-1? I didn't get to listen to the game, but Revolutionsoccer.net says 3-0

"Revs Top Alajuelense, 3-0, But Fail to Advance in Champions Cup

MARCH 26 - The Revolution defeated LD Alajuelense, 3-0, Wednesday night in the second leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup series in Alajuela, Costa Rica. Goals by Taylor Twellman, Wolde Harris and Pat Noonan gave the Revs the win, despite falling two men down due to red cards. However, the victory was not enough to see New England advance to the next round, as Alajuelense won the series on aggregate goals"

Reportedly Fonseca came on as a sub and got the LDA goal.

Nope, definitely 3-1. As Evan said, Fonseca got a late goal after DH and Noonan got sent off.

In a tournament situation such as this, factoring the aggregate scoring, a 3-1 win is completely irrelevant. Don't fool yourself.

    The good news

They didn't lie down and die.

Noonan and Joseph look like players.

    Re: The good news

I give SN and the team lots of credit for not laying down and they showed a lot of heart and desire.

My point is, purely from a bottom-line stance in the context of this tournament, a 3-1 win is about as much help as a 9-0 loss...

  20. BS, I don't mean Big Soccer!!

TRC Real Sociedad said, " Way to comeback Revs, two games in Costa Rica is more like a punishment than a series, you showed up and almost pulled it off. Which brings me to another point, when are we going to stop getting F***ED in Mexico and Central America?"

Its sad when our own ownership punishs the boys.

When are we (US Teams) going to stop getting F'ed

When we give the Central American teams the same treatment when the play on our pitch!!

Congrats, Boys you made us all VERY, VERY PROUD!!

some confusion by reading this , but earlier in the article it was pointed out the 5-3 aggregate victory by the CR team.
    http://www.soccertimes.com/international/2003/mar26.htm

"Fonseca collected a pass from Roy Myrie and beat goalkeeper Adin Brown with a high shot to make it 3-0 in the 65th minute and drop the Revs back into a two-goal hole. " .....should have had it 3-1 , no big deal

Congratulations to the Revs for the win

Well...I for one will take a 3-1 win over a 9-0 loss anytime! Though from a purely 'did we advance' point of view it is the same, from a team and players point of view I would submit they are very different.

It does answer the question asked in another thread about whether we would ever win. It also indicated that the 4-0 result wasn't quite as indicative of the differences in the two teams' capabilities.

My concerns are: 1. Neither Llamosa nor Moore played, are they going to start the season hurt, not a good sign for our elder statesmen. Hopefully that was SN deciding to be extra careful in sloppy conditions when down 4-0. No need to risk that much in this competition. 2. Hernandez getting tossed for dissent. If he wants to be a leader he needs to realize we are a goal from tieing the competition and just went a man down.

I guess another way to look at it is that the ref clearer respected our capability as he figured he had to toss two of our players in order to make sure we didn't score any more goals...:)

Strong finish and the Revolution did well to salvage their pride.

It could be argued until we're blue in the face as to whether a real "home" match could have afford the Revolution a better chance, especially when considering the relatively poor quality of officiating, and it's telling of the Revolution players' frustration knowing that, under the right/normal set of circumstances they could very well have come out of this series ahead of LDA.

    No matter at this point.

Solid effort and something to build on.

Re: Re: PbP Thread: Revs vs. LD Alajeulense [R] 03/26

Scoring a 3-1 win isn't, in itself, important in the tournament. However, the fact that they were well on their way to winning before the double ejection is. One of my bigger concerns coming into this tournament was it's effect on the MLS season. It's one thing that the Rev's management don't care about the games, but the players probably did. Putting them at a competitive disadvantage and having them get smacked around both games wouldn't put them in the best frame of mind going into the season.

I didn't feel as bad about the 4-0 loss as a lot of people. We had good scoring chances, passed reasonably well, and if they would have counted Twellman's onside goal and Joey's free kick which bounced straight down from the crossbar had gone in, we'd have been 2-2 at the half and the second half would have been a lot different. Having lost by such a wide margin, however, even a 2 goal victory in the next game would have been meaningless, kind of like scoring a consolation goal in the 90th minute of a loss. In this game, though, we clearly had them on the ropes, and I'm sure the LDA crowd had visions of their CCC season going down the drain before the ejections. After Sunday's game this is a better outcome than anyone really expected.

Strictly in the context of this tournament, yes you're right. I don't, however, expect Nicol to say to the press, "It was a tough way to go down on aggregate but I would rather we had lost 9-0."

However, we put ourselves in a gigantic hole after Sunday. By the time the Revs got it to 3-0 last night, I was like holy sh--, they just might do it. The two idiotic red cards followed quickly by the LDA goal pretty much killed it off.

That said, it's a good result for that particular match. Yes, it doesn't matter as far as the tie, but most of us (except the players and coaches themselves apparently) had pretty much written off this tie after Sunday so we just wanted a decent result to give us confidence going into the MLS season. Especially since weak starts have plagued the Revs throughout their history. I'd say winning 3-1 away despite playing with 9 men for a 30 minutes against a team that had just embarassed you 4-0... that would be a pretty decent result if you ask me.

Yea we're out, but I'm still glad we didn't lose 9-0 thank you very much. You can go down fighting or you can surrender. They went down fighting.
