Kickoff - 8:30 p.m. EST Brazilian World Cup star Romario makes his U.S. Open Cup debut in Dallas on Wednesday, as the first year USL First Division Miami FC travel to face USASA Region III champions Dallas Roma FC. Both teams will be very well rested coming into the second round match. Miami last seeing action on July 18, a 5-3 win over Seattle , and Roma last playing on June 14 vs. the Laredo Heat, in the first round of the U.S. Open Cup. Dallas Roma are an amateur club in status only. Many players on their roster have played for either the Dallas Burn, or indoors with the Dallas Sidekicks. The roster includes Juan Sastoque (Dallas Burn), Dominic Schell (Columbus Crew), Mark Rowland (DFW Tornados & FC Dallas), Wilco Ravestijn & Beau Brown (Dallas Sidekicks). The Dallas USASA club are looking to repeat their Open Cup performance from last year, when they scored 12 goals in their first games, before dropping their second round contest at Wilmington. While Romario is the main focus of Miami FC, there are other notable players in the squad. Guatemalan international Mario Rodriguez has two goals and two assists on the year, and Romarios' 1994 World Cup teammate, Zinho, also roams the midfield, adding two assists of his own. The first year USL club has been very competitive in USL First Division play, currently 6th in the league with a 4-3-5 record. Should be a fun night of good soccer, I'm looking forward to going out there and supporting the local soccer team.
Re: Miami FC vs Dallas Roma FC US Open Cup Wed. Night 6/28 in Mckinney Where's the McKinney Soccer Complex located?
Re: Miami FC vs Dallas Roma FC US Open Cup Wed. Night 6/28 in Mckinney This match has been moved to UT-Dallas according to the Miami PR department and UTD officials
Re: Miami FC vs Dallas Roma FC US Open Cup Wed. Night 6/28 in Mckinney SWEET! that's like 5 minutes away from me. To get to UTD you can either exit coit rd from george bush and turn south and then hang a left on Campbell and that will take you right by UTD or you can exit Campbell from 75 and turn west and that will take you right by it also. Thanks T-Lo love the work.
Re: Miami FC vs Dallas Roma FC US Open Cup Wed. Night 6/28 in Mckinney Jefe can you edit this to say it's at UTD?
Re: Miami FC vs Dallas Roma FC US Open Cup Wed. Night 6/28 in Mckinney Is there any assurance that both or either of the Brazilian oldfarts/world-class stars-of-yore will actually be there? Is there a ticket charge?
Re: Miami FC vs Dallas Roma FC US Open Cup Wed. Night 6/28 in Mckinney Unbelievably Roma FC held on to win the game 1-0. They got a pk off of a handball from a free kick in the 10th minute and bunkered from there. Miami had 2 players sent off late out of frustration. Fun game!
Re: Miami FC vs Dallas Roma FC US Open Cup Wed. Night 6/28 in Mckinney It appears on this bracket that Roma will have another home match in the 3rd Round. This time vs Chivas USA on July 12th. Correction: it appears the bracket doesn't indicate home and away the way I thought. They will play this game in Santa Barbara. Let's give a round of applause to Roma as they are the longest lasting USASA club in the tournament. Which means they get a $10,000 prize. This was also the first time a team from the USASA ranks has beaten a USL-1 (A League) side in the history of the Cup. Good luck, Roma. Beat the crap out of the Seedy Cheetos so we can have an all Dallas fixture in the 4th round.
Re: Miami FC vs Dallas Roma FC US Open Cup Wed. Night 6/28 in Mckinney I thought they lumped USASA and the PDL into the same level.... and there are three of those left, I believe.
I was only there for the 1st half, but he was pretty limited. He missed a sitter of a header at one point. It is pretty clear that he and the other old Brazilian were the only two on Miami that knew what they were doing. He would set up at the top of the box, back to goal and look to receive the pass. Once that happened he would try and turn or lay off, but the Dallas defenders caught onto that plan pretty quickly. It wasn't a fun match to watch, really. Roma got the PK and bunkered down hard. At one point late in the half 10 of 11 of Roma were defending within 20yrds of their goal. The Roma keeper made some nice saves.
Interesting. Congratulations to Roma for such a big win. I believe I read on the USOC site that it was the first time a USASA team had beaten a Div II/A-League team in USOC history. It will be interesting to see how they play against Chivas.
Re: Miami FC vs Dallas Roma FC US Open Cup Wed. Night 6/28 in Mckinney Looks like you're right. (last paragraph before schedule)
Oh, and from that same US Soccer source that Jefe found, if Roma can get by Chivas LA, they'll get to make another trip to Victoria Street to play the Galaxy.
Obviously, you've never been to Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara = one of the nicest places to live in the U.S., if you can afford it HDC = 5 miles from Compton
I can not tell you how surprised I am by this thread and the win over Miami FC. I play for the North Carolina State Select USASA qualifying team and we played ROMA June 11th in Dallas at regional qualifiers and beat them easily 3-1. Yes they have a few former professionals but to be honest none of them were impressive at all except one hollding mid-fielder who had played for the CREW from what I know. My team consisted of two former semi-pro's, 3 or 4 former college players from D2 and D3 schools, two current D2 players at Mount Olive College, a host of players from UNC-Asheville, and the former East Carolina University Program, 1 UVA player, a high school ESP player from Charlotte, and one Clemson player. We also had Willy Gudderamma from Raleigh Elite PDL and Campbell University (NCAA leading scorer last year). ROMA was horribly shy of fitness and was the most unimpressive team there. North Carolina was not even the best team there, South Texas was, and they lost to North Texas in the Championship so I am unsure of how ROMA is being called regional champs, b/c they werent.
Roma won the USASA Region III Open Cup qualifying tournament, making them the Region III Open Cup champions. You are talking about some kind of hybrid tournament invovling USASA State Select teams + a local club team.* State Select teams do not participate in the Open Cup. (Open Cup teams must be true club teams with set rosters-- "select" or "all-star" teams are not allowed.) *I would not be surprised if Roma were filling in for a team that canceled or were simply taking up the odd spot to round out the field of teams to 4 or 8. This type of thing (teams filling in at the last moment) seems to happen regularly at USASA tournaments. P.S. Also, the Region III tournament that Roma won was in Baton Rouge, not Dallas.
