Are you F'in kidding me, most of the calls went to the Americans in the second half because Ghana, knowing they only needed a draw at this point, was happy to commit foul after foul to slow the game down and disrupt any momentum we could build. The sixteen or whatever extra fouls we got don't come anywhere close to the value of a free goal on a BS call. Gooch did not push off with his arms, his challenge was by the book, the embarassing flop by Pingpongball or whatever was a disgrace. Get a clue, have you ever played the game?

Can't agree more, all we want is a fair chance, we didn't get it because of a terrible decision on an inconsequential head ball at the top of the box.

    1. the AP is a joke when it comes to soccer
    2. Blatter should be ashamed for the sport; however he's in no position to tell the truth

Blatter flattered the African teams, upon which his political power mostly rests, and Jack Warner's T'n'T, upon which the rest of his political power rests (Warner, not T'n'T.)

The guy is phonier than David Stern.

Funny how the rest of Europe always says "this German team is no good", then Germany does well.

This German team is good. Not technically the best, but a good team game, and Klose is playing super.

I was inspired while in Germany by the happy passion of the German fans. Most of them. :D

One way to view mainstream American opinion is through late-night jokes (I'm not saying it's the best way, obviously, but interesting). Last night, Conan O'Brien had the following joke in his monologue:

"Well, the US World Cup team is out of the World Cup, after being beaten by Ghana. Reports were that the entire nation of Ghana watched the game on its one T.V."

The studio audience's reaction was interesting, at first a smattering of laughter, then a reaction like, "whoa, wait a minute, that's kind of racist/xenophobic/nasty", then applause for (apparently) how nasty the joke was!

O'Brien obviously delighted in the audience's reaction to the joke, and commented on it during the rest of the show. Later, he then had a segment where he announced that, having been eliminated from the Cup, the US team had returned to the US and were in the studio, whereupon the camera panned to the stage, to see five individuals, big fat white guy, little (black) kid, an obviously blind guy (with a cane), and an old woman in a wheel chair, all draped with American flags, and sort of rolling a soccer ball between them.

Anyone seen kicker's player ratings for the match? They usually rate the ref as we'll and I'd like to see that.

well people are jealously of our team:)....we won all 3 games...and scored 8 goals...4 goals from Klose...so we are good...we played much better than Holland or France or Italy or England:)...we are top team....I have no idea why people still critize Germany....we are second best team in the world...
we won 3 times world cup....so what else?:)...and yes we can win the cup this year too..

the question I'd like answered is, if Gooch pushed Pimpong (as all the descriptions of the 'foul' seem to be stating)

...why did Pimpong fall backwards toward the ball?

and Bltleo...can Klose catch Ronaldo by the end of the WC? 9 and counting, right?

This is the part that pretty much condemns Merk to the "dumber" designation of Poll & Merk dumb and dumber refereeing fiasco that was yesterday.

Sentiments of the casual fan: "U.S. soccer team booted chance to boost sport"

From the Louisville Courier-Journal (so take it for what it's worth):
U.S. soccer team booted chance to boost sport
I think this is everyone's fear about growing the sport: the U.S. had a rare opportunity this year to win over casual fans, but blew it with some ugly performances. Here is a sports reporter who says he was ready to become a fan, and yet watching the U.S. turned him off.

Re: American Players just not good enough

No bad - the article states they need a Charles Barkley, and then points to the fact that Wynalda tried but failed. But I disagree. Eric called out to basically bench Reyna, was very critical of Donovan, Beasley, and Pope - and pointed out how in Arena's system, there was no one to get McBride the ball.

I thought Eric really held nothing back, and really called out players and coaches alike...the coach a little more since he was the one who actually picked the players and who put them in their roles on the field.
