Add Haiti in the US, Costa Rica there, and anyone other than Poland in Europe to the list.

Our offense was almost non-existent. Why didn't Arena push Johnson into the fray more? Why did Arena cave to Beasley's demand to be on the field?
Bruce will probably go. But he should not be blamed for the subpar performance of the players he has available (even without Pope and Mastro).
There is no depth it turns out for more than a few positions.

Dempsey and Onyewu (despite his being called for a penalty though there was no clear foul) are the beacons for WC qualifying in 2007, whether or not Arena is elsewhere.

This post I think is exactly right. IMO Premiership style game is physical and hard, but basically "fair" (not so much according to the letter of the law, but it's played straight-up and honest). As opposed to a hack style, which is completely different.

best quote of the day. five minutes into the biggest soccer event and the us were shaken/rattled/scared/out of their depth/worried . . . whatever you want to call it. maybe it was the burden of expectation, the coach, the tactics, the lack of leadership or team cohesiveness . . . ANYTHING. blame the refs, blame the oppositon diving . . .

but seriously, diving is part of the game, unfortunately. it's not as if it was some clever scheme that some of the teams decided to bebut at this wc. same goes for officiating. good calls, bad calls . . . part of the game.

i know a poster said that the penalty just before the half killed the us momentum. fine. but couldn't have that been a rallying point for the team?? arena could've had a knute rockne moment in the dressing room. told the boys that the refs were against them, the odds, the friggin WORLD was against them . . . but let's go out there and show em all!! let's win this game, get out of this group, make america proud, become heroes and no longer mere mortal men, blah blah blah . . .

they could've gone out there and kicked butt, beat the odds, earned some respect and made some history for themselves. instead, they floundered. (like the had from the first five minutes of the cup.)

in truth, they finished just as they began.

The Ghana bashing needs to stop. First of all, even if the game ended in 1-1 Ghana will still go through to the next round because all we needed was a draw. I see similar reactions, complaints from the game vs. italy. The US can't accept that teams are better than them.

I think everyone thinks Essien's yellow wasn't deserved. Too bad it had to happen. At least I hope they will get beaten by Brazil even worse.

After he has already stopped playing in distress-- the knee contact surely made whatever it is worse, but something had happened already...

Please post the MANY GHANA gloatings.... I'm not even a Ghana fan, and I noticed who the younger U.S. posters just came out attacking Ghana. There was not gloating... only "good luck" and "great job"

You expect bigger teams to respect you yet you show NO respect.. wow! Wonder why all Europeans look down... look at the past pages of hate for Ghana.

It's like some of the guys expected Ghana to just come and lose....

I don't hate you fans. You're not the ones diving. That said, while Essien was generally pretty honorable, he took a blatant dive late in the first half with Olsen marking him, and won a free kick.

Also: can you name any egregious US divers? Maybe there were a couple dives, but by and large they seemed more like players losing their footing on the grass, which has happened a whole lot in this tournament.

Why would a goal against us be a good thing and a "rallying point?"

i agree fully with teh asessment of donovan and beasley. i won't expect any movement forward for US soccer until those two highly overrated players are gone.

Hiddink is good .. but as i said he is taken...

Klinsmann is no where near the best coach .. he has no club expirence and struggles to get the best out of so many talented players that he knows very well. I think he would do worse with players he knows very little about and that don't have superstart status.

I would get a coach who has a good style..

i mean obviously Barca and milan have 2 great coaches with amazing style and flair. They would both develop the US greatly but taking a realist look they will never coach the US. the reason i stated Capello who is not very stylish but solid and successful is because he will probably leave Juve this year or most certainly the next and he stated he would like to coach abroad or a national team. Plus the USA can pay the greedy guy what he wants.

There are several excellent coaches out there though however the US must first take the step of looking at a outside coach.

but holding the current coach Arena... despite his strange attitude and behaviour would not be terrible seeing as what he has done in the past and the fact there is 4 years till the next cup which is all that matters. Evaluate how he reacts before disposing of him.

The diving was annoying, but it's sadly a part of soccer. I have no doubt that we would have been doing somewhat similar things if we were up. And it turned out a couple of them weren't dives at all, that one "dive" at the edge of the box (forget who the player was) resulted in a substitute.

I really like this Ghana team. They are everything that we aren't. They are well coached, confident, play to their strengths, and they are tactically sound.

Congratulations Ghana, I'm definetely pulling for you boys from now on.

The thing is though, if they're getting whipped, then imagine what would happen to us. I think credit should be given to Ghana. They played with heart, we didn't. They got to the second round, we didn't.

I'm not sure which play you are talking about, but I think I disagree and that was a foul.

The best player on the pitch??? What game were you watching? He scored a good goal...without that goal, I remember him failing with cut back moves and losing possession. He didn't beat anyone 1v1...like I said, he's just a wanna be hotstepper. He doesn't even have quick enough feet to be one. All I see is a player that will show off against mediocre teams...running at players and such...much like Convey. When it comes to playing against good nations...he is just average. Not a star in the game for me...I like his hardwork and his swagger like I said before...a good roleplayer.

Claudio Reyna is the first to be injured on his self-esteem.

He had to get outta field for an honor strain.

Haminu Dramani. On the replay its apparent it was a foul, altough Dramani made the most of it.
