With temperatures of 20 degrees at midnight, they finally celebrated the victory in the Old Town of Nuremberg and there were rumours about a few England players having been seen in the Finnegan's pub as well (the Grand Hotel, where they had been accommodated, is just 2 minutes away from the main station & Old City). I'm happy to notice that 90% of all England fans behaved very well, unfortunately a small minority tried to provoke the Germans by singing the "10 bombers" song & showing an English bomber (which isn't really appreciated here as Nuremberg was totally destroyed after the 2nd WW):
They are glorifying the defence of Britain by the RAF from the Luftwaffe, not glorifying in the devastation wrought on Germany. Not saying it's appropriate at the World Cup of course, being an antagonistic reference to something over 60 years ago, but lets get the facts right.
It might be so. Nevertheless I think we shouldn't mix up politics of former times with sport. We Germans know about the dark chapter in our history, but I hope you understand that such actions (how seen on the above pic) by English fans in a city, where they were welcomed and where thousands of innocent people died during the British bombing, isn't really tasteful. Thankfully it was only a small minority, how I mentioned before. It's simply fantastic to see thousands of fans from all over the world celebrating peacefully together! I saw lots of Germany fans hand in hand with England fans, drinking and singing together (the famous Nuremberg beer & sausage was the absolute "hit" for your supporters and speaking about "see you again in the final". In spite of the rivalry there is a lot of respect for each others, I think... I've been talking to many English fans and everyone told me to feel really like being at friends, what surely is a big compliment. I'm sure that nobody will forget these great tropical WC nights here in Germany!
I believe the English and the Germans have a lot more in common than most and agree that the past is the past (or should be) however as a baby boomer (born in 1948) who grew up listening to uncles stories about being at Dunkirk/D Day/being a P.O.W/battle of Britain( my dad was in the RAF) one gets immersed in that shared history....and remember Churchill's words during the blitz...."We will meat out to the Germans the measure....and more than the measure that they have meated out to us"....thousands....10's of thousands, of Germans died in bombings in WWII....many of them because they elected and followed a nut case....and that is a fact.....many, many thousands died in London and other English cities because they were equally determined to survive.... and that is also a fact.....I hold no grudges but was formed by this chapter in a shared history....for better or for worse...
