I had predicted Iran would tie Mexico and then lose to Portugal. As it turned out, Iran decided to tank its game earlier than I had imagined with that horrible, mistake prone, tactically inept, cowardly display in the second half. But who knows? Perhaps Iran can rebound and do well against the Portugese. Often, Iran does its best when the least is expected from it, and the fact is most Iranians were looking to pick up points against Mexico more than Portugal.

I saw Portugal play today. They didn't have Deco's talents in the midfield and were unimpressive against an Angolean team that had no concept of teamwork. There were moments in the game where that 1-0 lead was in jeopardy. I'm 100% certain that Iran is a more powerful team than Angola. Iran without a doubt have a better than average chance to draw or defeat Portugal. Portugal vs Iran promises to be a battle and one of the best games in the cup. Both teams are capable of beating eachother and Iran needs those points more than ever. I can't wait. I love this world cup.

You probably didnt see the same match i did...

Yes, Portugal played bellow their standards but in the first half the result could have been easily 3-0 or more if we scored the chances we had.

let's count... 16 sec, Pauleta alone makes the ball go cm of the bar
    4 min - goal
    CRonaldo header on the crossbar
CRonaldo shot to a good defense by the keeper

2nd half we controlled the game completly & i Angola didnt had a serious chance.

About next game... if Iran plays like today, allways trying to play thru middle & leaving the wings undefended... i think the result will be another victory for us! Anyway i hope Portugal plays a bit better next Saturday.

There is no question that Portugal is an outstanding team. You are right. Portugal accomplished their mission by earning 3 points. Congratulations. About your next game, Portugal vs Iran promises to be one of the best games in group D. I'm looking forward to it.

I just wanted to make a note that this was the first time in a World Cup competition where I saw the fans of a national country boo them for a poor performance. I'm sure it has happened before but I don't recall. Portugal was booed today by it's fans.

It's simply impossible for Portugal to play as bad as they did today against Iran.

I dont think even God himself can make us play that brutal.

The only positives I could take from our game today was that the players have woken up after the public lambasted them for this horrible performance.

hopefully deco and maniche start, so we get our midfield back.

the only other things i have to say is..

its good we only won 1-0 instead of 4/5-0 like we could have so the players try hard and dont get cocky in the game vs iran and that the iranians saw portugal today and are probably thinking thats how we usually play....hopefully there in for a suprise if we have deco and maniche back and play our fluid control ball midfield game which was SEVERLY lacking today.

I will say the same thign i said for Mexico vs Iran.

If Daie plays we will lose, simple as that.
Did he produce anything the whole game, NOPE.
he just wants caps and a World Cup goal to end his career with, if it is going to be ended anytime soon.

Iran could have easily beaten Mexico if they played liek they did in the first half. Portugal is a strng side, so all i can say once again is that, If Daie plays we will lose.

I saw Italy being booed by lot's of ppl & they have 3 WC's.

You need to understand that due to our previous "bad" experiences with startings, our players were more than happy with the result (3 points) IMHO it was more a psycological problem than a real one. Since Angola wasnt causing any problems to our defense (not even our "SL Benfica" beloved Mantorras ;) ).

Of course we will have to play alot better against Iran & especially Mexico but 3 are on the bag & we'll start next match with less stress than Iran.

PS: To all the ppl saying the match was boring... i seen everyone of them & i got to sleep during the England vs Paraguai & Holland vs Serbia so im sure this wasnt the only "boring" game.

    We're out, simple as that.

all down to mirzapour too. at 1-1 its a match. a good match too.

branko played fora draw tho, thats his problem, he's not a man. daei, we all know he's useless

as far as teh game with portugal is concerned, ronaldo will kill the left. nosrati wotn be abel to handle him. simao equally will kill kaebi. they'll havea few races but simao overall kills kaebi.

nothign mroe to say. we'll wait 4 more years

I forgot my comma, but still I thought it was understandible, maybe you've been partying to much( although i shoudnt be talking):)

I meant we cant play as horrible and ridiculous against Iran as we did vs Angola "babe";)

Actually Deco(hopefully) will displace Simao in the starting 11 and play as the playmaker he is controlling the game..

so instead of simao vs kaebi it'll be figo..

kaebi is a fast young man while figo is a 32 year old.........

Theres no place for optimism, it's a matter of logic:

    - Roudbarian/Talebloo to start insted of Mirzapour.
    - Borhani to start insted of Daei.
    - Zandi/Madanchi, Shojaei, Khatibi for subs.

Then we might have a chance to pull a point or more out of Portugal.

If Portugul gives Iran as much room on the ball as they gave Angola, and are as wastefull of attacks, this will be a fun game. Otherwise I dont see Iran being able to hang with Portugul.

Portugal had there pace, its Just they couldnt get passed the position players.

I know they usual play the wings but I think Ronaldo,As a centre role is good for him.he gets doubleteamed alot and thats shows respect.

Iran are a Good team, lets see what happens.

Which looked like it was going to work until a horrible blunder.

Whereas a draw vs. Mexico would have been a productive result, now Iran must beat Portugal to have a realistic chance of advancement. Iran will not likely advance with 4 points, even though it would be a very respectable showing. The question is whether Iran will play like it's a must WIN game.

Portugal had a good game, overall.

Big start, with lots of missed chances and one goal. A little more luck and we would have scored a bundle.

After that, we took the pace out of the game and let the time run out. It wasn't beautiful, but it delivered the goods. I saw a fluid game when Portugal accelerated and good understanding overall between the players.

As for Iran, man, I'm surprised to see so many criticism from Iranians. I know a loss is a loss, but Mexico is a great team and after Mexico's first goal you guys pushed them to the ropes until the equalizer. In the second half, it took two awful mistakes in a row to concede the second goal and that took the wind out the Iranian team. The third goal just went in because at that moment the players were discouraged after holding on for so long.

Anyway, I don't predict a walk in the park for Portugal and we'll have to change into a higher gear to win against Iran, which I'm confident that we can. Let's see if we do.

The biggest obstacle in front of the team is to overcome the let-down. IMO, it's the coach's responsibility to take all the responsibility for the loss and inject some confidence in his players, plus make a few major changes in the line-up. If those 2 things happen then we have a chance of getting a tie, or maybe a win -- if not, we could be embarrassed even more!!! :(

Iran has to attack portugal cause they need to win badly...thus the'll expose their dubious defence to pauleta, c ronaldo, deco , figo, maniche, simao..............

the iranians will come out like crazy but will learn from there mistakes vs mexico they will not tire them selves out as early as they did vs mexico... portugal will have to buckle up and play somewhat of a 4 1 1 3 1
with costhina infront of the defence and maniche behind deco.. portugal will have to take advantage of EVERY chance they get becuase iran will not give up too many this game.
