This is also the way I remember it. It was absolutely a 3-5-2. At times it seemed Heyduk was the second d-mid, other times it seemed like it was O'Brien was then others Reyna. McBride was clearly tired, but when Mathis replaced him we lost our offense. Clint really only had one good pass during his time on the field putting Clint in was clearly a bad sub.
This was the line up: ----------Friedel---------- Sanneh---Pope---Berhalter -----Mastro----O'Brien---- Hejduk ---Reyna -----Lewis -----Donovan--McBride---- Fankie was Right Wing...NOT d mid....not even close Mastro and JOB were D Mids...Claudio had the center of the park...mostly offense in foirst 60 min...before he got too tired and started staying back more as Sanneh came up..... McBride played poorly....Mathis had a nice volley from the top of the box and a great cross to Sanneh.....as a Sub he was better than Jones or Stewart...........but to be honest not one of the three of them had much an impact.
Ulsan is in the southeast corner of South Korea, about as far away from Soeul as you can get on the mainland. For more on that city, game, tournament, read this book--23 Days in Korea: An American at the World Cup: http://www.trafford.com/4dcgi/view-item?item=3331&15764608-31895aaa
Dempsey and Beasley aren't bad crossers but they could be better. This isn't a problem though as our fullbacks Lewis and Cherundolo will be expected to move up their fair share and both are good crossers (Lewis is superb). Also those wings are probably the areas most debatable right now in terms of who will get the start. While that's the lineup I personally think we'll see, don't be surprised to see Convey on the left instead of Beasley, or Convey on the left and Beasley on the right. Convey, lately, has shown better services from the wing than Beasley or Dempsey, but the downside to doing this is that it would leave the left side exposed to Czech attacks as Convey has a reputation for not hustling as hard on defense as Beasley and Dempsey. I doubt we'll see Donovan or Reyna on the right because 1) It's not Donovan's best position. You don't want to limit him by taking him out of the middle. and 2) Reyna's hamstring/leg issues make a wing position less than ideal for him. Donovan's got a great combination of talent, skill and vision. Kind of our "golden boy," he'll be our next captain after Claudio retires and consensus says he's our best midfielder after Reyna. He can also be very effective in this withdrawn forward position. I'm interested to see how he does this WC too, as hopefully his decision to shun European competition for time being to play in MLS hasn't limited his progress.
I noticed in the warm up series....crosses are coming in from a lot deeper than I'm used to seeing. O'Brien in particular is lobbing them in from 20 yards off the box. Lewis and Cherundalo haven't gotten as far forward on their crosses as I'd like them to get. We need to get in more crosses from the by-line.
The only thing I can remember was the BOGUS OFFSIDE CALLS when Landon Donovan was about to "penetrate" the Germans....
Everybody is wrong. Forget how it "appeared" to play. This is what the lineup submitted by BA was..... GK: Mad Brad RCB: Sanneh CB: Pope LCB: Berhalter RDM: Hejduk LDM: Pablo RM: Reyna CM: JOB LM: Steady Eddie Lewis Fowards : Donovan and McBride This is the lineup BA submitted. I have the game on tape. Just watched it.
