"A Must Read" and see. Goals on video from the past 3 years including the infamous "you just got burned Johnny Walker". Gotta love it. A tribute to the best player in the history of the league.
"'He has the respect of everyone in the league,'" Eric Wynalda said before the 2004 MLS Cup." Well, probably not Zach Thornton. Nice piece, I guess, though I do not share Bruce's assessment. I'd make him the second or possibly the third best player the league has seen, behind Marco and possibly Landon Donovan. I find it kinda funny that Jaime got his 100th on a PK, and the he hit so many of those the last few seasons, given the fact that he was a woeful PK taker for us for many years. I mean, there was a period when he was no better than a 50-50 shot to put one in. Now he hits them regularly. Thank goodness.
Big Soccer question here -- in an above post I made mention of Landon Donovan. For a short period this afternoon the Donovan mention has been hyperlinked to an offer from (I think) soccervault.com to buy Landon Donovan jerseys. Needless to say, I did not put that hyperlink in my original post. Now it seems to be gone. Anyone know why this is happening? Is it some BS moneymaking scheme? It makes it seem as if my post is just an effort to peddle jerseys, which it is not. I am pretty sure I do not like this.
You might have a bot on your computer that highlights certain words and throws in a popup ad. What's your browser and OS?
I really miss the old kit with the horizontal stripes on the shorts. Edit: "You just got burned, Johnny Walker!" One of the few times I felt bad for a Metro.
Windows and explorer. Who knows. Maybe that's it. Though to my knowledge it's never happened before, and I post with mild regularity. It's all weird to me.
No kidding. What a rip-off that was. Seems all the more egregious after Guevara's ongoing/continuing problems. I sure wish I knew how to turn the "You just got burned, Jonny Walker!" into a ringtone for my phone.
Wednesday June 12, 1996 Jaime scored his first goal at RFK. While it was in Bolivian strip against the US nats, it was still pretty sweet, and certainly the high point of the match. I always suspected Marco set it up well before the game, telling Jaime how easy it would be to burn Agoos with one cut and lots of speed, and make an impression on Arena and KP. Jaime certainly carried his own load all these years, but he owes Etch for the pass that got him started. We've been extremely fortunate to have 4 of the very best at United. Arena, KP, Etch and Jaime.
I didn't see the 2004 vs. Colorado that Connelly references in that list. Anybody got a clip of what he's talking about?
You could make a good case for Cannon -- an even better one than Guevara had. But Moreno still should have been MVP.
This article made me remember the first Jaime Moreno goal that I saw. It was a friendly at RFK where Boliva was playing the USA. Moreno collected the ball about 60 yards out and raced down the right sideline at full speed with the ball never more than five feet away from him. Jeff Agoos tried to keep up but couldn't and Jaime slotted the ball home for a 1-0 win. Little did I know I would be treated to such talent for the next 11 years as a DC United Fan. I agree that hands down - Jaime Moreno is currently and has been the best player to ever play in MLS, made even better by the fact that he plays for DC United (and was injured the one year he had to play for the metrosum). 100 and counting..... -The Far Side
US Cup '95. He beat Friedel to the near post. I remember thinking I'd never seen anyone with that kind of speed and close control before. I'm wearing the event t-shirt as I type this. (You'd think a professional person could afford clothes newer than 10 years old.)
My old Moreno 2004 compilation has it. It's the one after the infamous "You just got burned" goal. I'm not sure I buy Connolly's theory that Moreno bounced it off Ritchie Kotschau on purpose...I think he was trying to pass to a wide open Eskandarian who was crashing the goal, but regardless, the ("as we say") nutmeg was a real thing of beauty.
