Well, the World Cup is upon us again, and all around LA, I see signs of corporate support for the national team. Unfortunately, it's the Mexican national team. I've seen Doritos bags with a picture of several players. The latest insult are outdoor billboards for Coca Cola with Mexican national team players and words in Spanish urging them onto victory. We should really start a movement to pressure these companies to support the U.S. team. I wonder if Bill O'Reilly would get something going. (He would be finally good for something.)
So last night I picked up a case of Bud Light. When I got home, I went straight for the bud light to my suprise the beer bottles had the logo of the Mexican Soccer Federation. I would have expected this from Corona or Dos XX but Budweiser? Bigdoug why are you getting mad over something as trivial as this. first of all Mexicans were here first. J/k well not really that is true. Second its only natural to have companies sponsor famous sports teams. And since the Mexican Nt, gets higher ratings than the Lakers, Dodgers, Angels, USC football, Clippers, all of MLS, and Raiders. Then it is good business to sponsor them. Oh yeah, it is Los Angeles not watsonvillle. peace Warning: This post contains some sarcasm. If you can not understand or are angered by this response, get a life.
It won't be long before the Korean NT becomes #2. Nevermind, it already has. Just be glad their 94 games were on the other side of the country.
I'd write those companies a letter stating what BS this is and simply say you and your friends won't buy it again. So far we have Doritos, Budweiser and Coke. Fine, they are dead to me.
1) Mexican NT 2) Chivas 3) America 4) Salvadorean NT 5) Guatemalan NT 6) Korean NT 7) US NT 8) Galaxy 9) Cruz Azul, Pumas, Morelia 10) Chivas USA, bandwagon Man U, Real Madrid That is probably the popularity of soccer teams in the LA area. And I'm actually being generous with the US team.
So about 2 months ago when the World Cup was in LA, I went down to see it. I get there after a 2 hour drive and walk straight up to the security guard. They inform me that I need a ticket to get in, while this isn't marketed anywhere on their website prior to the event. They inform me that it was well marketed in the LA area on the radio. While obviously I don't get the same stations up here in SB, I was still curious as to what station marketed it. It was the Spanish sports/talk radio station in LA. So, it was good to see the World Cup get two stops in Mexico and 0 in the U.S. Only 5 people got in to see the trophy, for the hour or so I was there, I couldn't convince the security to let me in.
This has got to be the dumbest thread ever. Why are American companies obligated to to support the US soccer team? There are three milllion Mexican-Americans/Mexicans in LA. Why wouldn't Budweiser or Doritos create a campaign to target just those buyers? Companies do that all the time, one campaign for men, another for women. One for young consumers, another for boomers. You use what appeals to them and go after that segment of the market. Are you telling me that A-B, Doritos and Coke aren't selling their wares to Anglos too? Now, for your racist undertones, take this thread and stick it up your a$$. LA (and the rest of the SW US) was annexed from Mexico, idiot! Where did you think all those people went, to the reservation? Internment camps? Siberia? And yes, those people are my relatives.
now now, lets not get mad just because most of us despise the Mexican NT. I wouldn't call it racism, its pride for the US. chill out and have a "mexican Bud"
Imagine the suffering of Germans, living in the land of great original beer, yet at the World Cup will be forced to swallow McDonalds and Budweiser. Point is... Americans, and ironically the same Budweiser clan, for their part, do their own American invasions on other lands. What goes around comes around?
I second that. It is time for a boycott. I will admit that I have thoroughly enjoyed Doritos chips for many years. Taco, Guacamole, Fiery Habanero, and Salsa Verde are a few of my favorite flavors. I was shocked, however, to learn that the Doritos brand is now pandering to Mexican consumers by supporting the Mexican National Team over the USMNT. What's next - Coke with lime?
Wow. Exactly where did race come into this picture? You're the one with the race issues if you just throw it in without it being discussed. Grow up.
you do understand this are companies right? and that their main focus is not show support or pride, is to earn money. It's not about supporting, it's about marketing and money, and in LA(and other places in the US)the Mexican NT it's way more profitable than the US NT..
YOU brought race into this discussion. Not me. You're reading things into the post that aren't there. If I recall, the Spanish annexed California from the natives before the Americans took it from Mexico. I don't think you really want to get into that sort of discussion on a soccer board. The record of European conquest of the Americas is completely blood soaked no matter who did the conquering. Nobody can really claim the high moral ground here.
I don't think many Mexicans in the US can afford anything other than Bud. Corona is for gabachos, although anyone who needs lime and salt for beer (or tequilla, especially) isn't much of a drinker...
Actually, those people eventually became Americans. It's the White Mexicans' unwanted unwashed from Jalisco that Bud and Coke are going after.
BS I can afford anything, cabron. I prefer cerveza modelo and dos xx. And cerveza Victoria. Tequila- Jimador, centenario, don julio. Tupac>Eric B
Chicago, too. The Tri billboards are flying high. Naturally, not a breath of a hint that the U.S. has a national soccer team, too. I wonder if Nike is putting up Joga Bonita billboards of Ronaldinho dancing in Buenos Aires ... probably not.
Only confirmed Corona drinker I know is a sheet-metal worker named Jose, whose English is decidedly limited. His 2nd favorite beer is Bud Light, which is a pretty damning indictment of Corona.
I bet if a marketing survey was done by Doritos that showed Americans would buy their product if the USMNT was on it, Kasey Keller's smiling face would be there. It's all about money, marketing, etc. Greed is good. If Mexico wins the world cup you can be damn sure you'll see products celebrating it everywhere.
Well, you can also afford to post on the internet abunch of times, so you're not the typical diaspora Mexie. Of course if you're a pocho, then the aversion to the St. Louis Ricewater is completely understandable and proper. I don't think I've seen Victoria up here. Is it stores or restaurants? In spite of being pro-West Coast in pretty much everything, including rap, I'd seriously disagree with this, and I don't think I've ever seen anyone say it either. Not that I was a huge Eric B fan, it just happens to be my name...
