The Spit [R]

Discussion in 'D.C. United' started by ursula, Apr 22, 2006.

  1. It was a classic goal celebration and I loved it. Way to rub salt in the wound.

It was right up there with Clint Dempsey's swing of a home run at RFK after he scored. Even though I hated him for it, it was pretty funny.

Do you think DC United gotto put the nail in the coffin of yet another Metro Scum coach. Mo Johnson seems like a pretty nice guy and I hope he ends up somewhere else. Shame that he had to start with the Red Turds.

Perhaps you may have heard of Mr. Tommy Maddox :D

Not trying to disprove your point but a believe the number of players who jumped from the XFL to the NFL was more than a handful. I think though that whether he had Smart or He Hate Me on the back of his jersey Rod would have found his way to the NFL.

They said it during a sideline report at the beginning of the second half. Apparently they interviewed Esky @ half and that's what he said about it.

I specifically thought of Maddox when I posted.

First of all, he was already an NFLer before the XFL started. Not that he got a ton of playing time before, but he already had over 160 attempts before suiting up for Pittsburgh after the XFL.

Also, he had one very good year, one average year, and that's about it for the Steelers. Smart has gotten significant time as a returner and also seen action on offense rushing and receiving as well as defense. While he may have gone to the NFL regardless of the name on his XFL jersey, it certainly earned him a hell of a lot of publicity and got a lot more people to notice him.

I thought he said that the team had decided to do it before the first game. I presume they didn't follow through since we were behind in the first game as each goal was scored. Good that we scored first on Saturday, enabling him to carry it out.

MLS is using that pic, w/o :ALECKOWNED: sadly, as the little teaser pic for the video of his goals.

Call it a hunch, but MLS isn't upset about this.

I'm normally very stodgey and old fashioned about my sportmanship issues but this was damned funny. Almost as good as Dempsey's baseball hijinx, which I said at the time was damned funny (though I was pissed).

    Go one yourself Alecko.

BTW when is the t-shirt for sale? Seriously.

From my inside sources on the team, the original plan was to take a swig, spit it out, grimace, crush the can, throw it in a garbage barrel and then pretend to take a crap in the barrel but esky wimped out at the last minute.

Actually, I think he said that Tino's old lady had come up with the idea, and that Tino told the team about it and they thought it was funny. It was. So was Dempsey's. So was Dely-Valdez' cell phone celebration (the first few times).
As for spitting it out - it would be dangerous as an athlete, to swallow that much caffeine while playing. And I think it might cause him to fail the league's performance-enhancing-product testing.
Dumping the whole can out would have been far more insulting than spitting a small sip out, in my mind.

Why? Is United planning to change the name of the team to DC Sierra Mist or Sierra Mist DC?

Both Wilbon and Kornheiser loved the stunt - They showed the clip

Incredibly, this is the FIRST benign thing they've EVER said about soccer, soccer in the US and MLS
