good squad leon. personally i think you're being a bit optimistic when you call demichelis a defender. by all accounts he is an awful defender, however i'm sure he will go as cover for mascherano. therefore peker will pick another defender and one less striker, especially when you consider defenders get more suspensions than anyone else and the fact that ayala, heinze, zanetti and sorin, our first-choice back four, are all injury-prone. of your five strikers it's difficult to leave one out. maybe one will get injured and his decision will be made for him.

    IDS,

My own personal view is that your strikers and midfielders win you the world cup, so I've tried to squeeze in an extra attacker and midfielder. France in 1998 were the exception to that rule, at that time they did not possess one world class striker but they did have an outstanding defence. In Zanetti/Sorin and Demichelis you have players who can play both in defence or, if needed to, in midfield so both those areas are pretty well covered. Argentina have such talent upfront that it would be shame to waste that by taking an extra defender.

There are 2 people I do not want to see in the world cup squad, Pato and Coloccini. Pato was yet again a disgrace for Boca Juniors last night, the bloke is doing my head in.

We didn't make the final's of 90 because we had great strikers.. Defense wins World Cup. I have no Doubt about our offense putting the ball into the net but when you allow three goals?

You need a combination of both, a good defence and a good strike force. However, my own personal view is that if you have a great attack you can get away with merely a good defence. But I take your point, after all look at the Brazil side of 1982, one of the best teams of all time, yet against Italy thet made basic defensive mistakes.

One thing I am certain of is that if we have a clown like Pato in goal then Argentina will not get through the group stage.

As for 1990, lets face it we got to the final with a combination of luck (remember the game against Brazil, how many times did they hit the woodwork?), sheer grit from a injured Maradona and a jewel in Canniga.

leon, i take your point. our strength is in attack and midfield but i would still ensure we are covered in defence and, for me, that means taking eight defenders. we are lucky in that messi can play striker or attacking midfielder, so unlike other countries who will be torn about whether to take four or five strikers, we have no such concerns. i agree, it would be terrible for either aguero or saviola to miss out, but the situation is that neither will start for us anyway, and because they are so similar, only one of them will ever be used as a sub in any one game. peker will have to make a decision in the middle of a match, so why not make the decision before the world cup? however, both arguments are equally valid. also, i think we could add scaloni to your list of undesirables. he didn't even play yesterday for west ham. and think of it this way, the worse pato plays for boca this season, the less chance he plays in the world cup. be grateful for small mercies.

How does Pato get in the Boca side, every time I see him plays he messes up, and not just run of the mill mistakes, but huge great big mistakes, in every single game. Yet there he is week after week in the team, same for the national side. Has he got pictures of Peker in a comprimising situation, what other reason is there for this guy getting anywhere near the national team.

    IDS,

As far as I know Maxi is injured but it is not serious and he should be fit for the world cup. It's shame because he had hit form when he picked up his injury.
