The new president of the U.S. Soccer Federation said Wednesday that he is optimistic a women's professional league will be relaunched in the United States in the near future.

"I don't want to put a time period on the word 'soon,' but everything we've seen out of a number of meetings [is that] things are moving in the right direction," Sunil Gulati said

Soon in the women's game means..

10-15 years, but they will bring it up every year as if it will happen next year

Are you a born pessimist? the Men's started a proffessional league back in the 60 or something and folded. how long did it take before the present one start off! are you comparing the women with the Men's. meaning it gotta be light years before it ever make an appearance. I could bet it will be here by 07 or 08. I am confidence.

Gulati says maybe a little sooner than we've planned, he looks like really serious...

So, why not merge the W-League that is up and running right now with the new womens pro-league??

Not Pessimistic, but we have heard every year that next year is the one.....

Don't make statements, make an announcement, until then it means nothing except fodder for message boards and Women's soccer supporters

W-League teams lose money, and they are not paying the players now...

W-League is 100% amateur (like the WPSL) with eligibility rules in place to protect the collegiate eligibility of the players.

    That's why.

Gulati is the president of the U.S. Soccer Federation. That is the governing body for soccer in the United States. It neither runs, nor administers leagues. However any league that does not want it's players and officials branded as belonging to an "outlaw league" and ineligible to play internationally or transfer to teams in sanctioned leagues will have to apply to the USSF for sanctioning.

Gulati likely has inside information, but he will not be involved in the day to day running of any league, nor will he be financially involved.

...and, to add to the message board fodder, that's exactly what I'm hearing from someone well plugged into the DC soccer community...including the professional side. It's next year. I have a hard time believing that.

I'll press for more information and report back. It may just be a commonly held buzz here, but it seems pretty wide-spread.

I think you could see a league for '08 if WC '07 does well (which means in this case, generates enough interest to get 10 or so people or corporations to pony up about $1 million a piece).

FWIW, a lot of teams with SSS's have a lot of dates to fill. That means the teams just need to lose less than the cost of having nothing going on. That's a different bar than renting (for instance) RFK and THEN trying to break even.

Is this an old T shirt? Is it new? Perhaps positive thinking by the players?

Players association is selling off all the old merchandise... players have no knowledge, just the rumours same as everyone else.

Even Mitts, who is the official mouthpeice of the reorg has been silent... latest I have heard is that there is to be an announcement by summer for 07, but then again. Mitts told me last August(Yes, I saw her in Person) that there would be an announcement by last October.

Like I stated, fodder for the boards - gives us something to talk about.

Ignorant on this but can't they join forces at least? I would think that if everyone was for a Womans League relaunch, someone would suggest changing the rules or perhaps 'taking over' (not sure what the right term is) WPSL and call it a farm system?

I have a gut feeling that any women's league that forms will "piggyback" on MLS. I think that MLS is holding off on starting the women's league until they get a sufficient number of soccer specific stadiums and independent investors. When the fire stadium opens, that would be four SS stadiums in the USA. A women's team would generate additional revenue dates at these stadiums. I believe that MLS also wants to expand their ownership pool by a few more owners before they take the leap into women's soccer. Uncle Phil and Mr. Kraft still are footing too much of the bill for USA club soccer for my taste. The arrival of Red Bull into the picture is huge. If MLS start a women's team in the next 2-5 year time frame, then I would envision that there would be teams in each of the soccer specific stadiums and possibly another team owned by Red Bull. This would mean a startup pro league of approximately 5-6 teams. I think that this is where the W-League could come into play. The women's league may wish to follow a modified version of the women's league in England which combines pro and amateur teams in the same league. Yes, the pro teams would have a huge advantage but they would also play away games at the W-League sites and thus create a larger league footprint. I think that any investor would be crazy to start a women's league that isn't tied into MLS or at least has a beneficial agreement to use their playing facilities. If you want a women's league, then support MLS and lobby MLS for a women's league. I live in Atlanta so I don't have that luxury. However, the Atlanta Silverbacks and Lady Silverbacks are moving into their new stadium this year so I will be supporting them. Their owner has made it publicly known that he has long term ambitions to have an MLS team in Atlanta. Hopefully a lady's team would thrive alongside them. The Lady Silverbacks will have 7-8 former Atlanta Beat players on the team this year thus earning the nickname the Silverbeat.

I hope MLS has nothing to do with it for their sake and the sake of the women's game. The women's teams need to be able to stand alone to succeed. MLS is not like the NBA where it has the funds to prop up a league. Even after MLS gets all its stadiums built, but struggles financially the first things to go would be the women's teams. I don't have a problem with a women's club being a tennet in an MLS stadium, but I don't think a WMLS will be possible for many years to come.

If I may, I will now make a quick plug for my "W-League Plus" idea which would establish a group of regional leagues under the W-League banner, with a championship series at the end of the year.

The "Plus" is that the USSF would require players to play in the expanded "W-League" in order to be considered for the national team. National Teamers would receive a stipend.
