when Giorgio Chinaglia gets introduced and the Meadowlands this weekend. We he be booed like he was back in the day.
He won't be booed by me. He has been a friend of my old club since his Cosmos days remember all the car commercials he did for manfredi Motors back then. Corado (Joe) Manfredi was one of our past club presidents.
I'll be thinking of all those miraculous goals he scored in the same building as I cheer him. I'll leave it to Lalas to exact his own revenge. He's there as a tribute to the soccer played in the stadium. I hope I don't have to explain to my son and his friends why they are booing the old Cosmos. That would be poor form, bad manners, and we want tomorrow night to be 100% positive, don't we?
I would think most of the crowd will just recognize the name and applaud. A few scattered boos from peeps that are anti, but most there are not that informed or passionate about their dislike for Cagnalia. Serious question, why do we dislike him? I honestly don't know.
Why do we dislike DC fans? GC has an inflated opinion of himself, based in part on actual achievements that he never, ever lets anyone forget. It's the smug, "Look at my trophy case for proof of my undoubted superiority," that makes the skin crawl. It's one thing to be proud, another to be a pain in the ass. -- like the brat who wears his spelling medal to school. That's one reason. But booing him would bring us down to the level of DC fans: no class, no sense of occasion, no knowledge of a host's obligation to a guest. Both Georgio and DC are best seen within the frame of a rear-view mirror.
The answer is quite simple. Yes I applaud him as a player for the Cosmos and what he accomplished up to, say 1985. Since then, and most recently a few weeks ago, the man does nothing but golden shower everyone and everything that is NY soccer. "Fire him", "trade him". Joining in the ChampionsWorld tour which excluded Metro/MLS from sharing in any profits from GS matches, etc. etc. Mind you Giorgio is a pompous ass. Was a great player, but in his mind the line for talent starts behind him. Any match he provides color commentary for is a sickening reminder of such. I won't be at the game this Saturday (I'll actually be watching live on the Revs feed in Boston), but I wouldn't boo the man, but I wouldn't cheer him either.
I cheered Chinaglia as well back in the Cosmos days. The one ad I liked was the one he did for Joe Manfredi's Safe Toyota in Brooklyn. It had a softball game going on and at the end Chinaglia gave an on-camera tag line for the dealership, to which Joe replied "Giorgio, your in the wrong game."
I get the pompous part. It's far from my style aswell. But the dislike must go beyond that. Which brings me to your point above. Why would or should he share the "profits" of Champions World with MLS?
In hindsight, there were no profits anyway. It was the concept of the outside organization working with NJSEA (what a suprise) to get the rights to the games at the GS over the folks who thought they had exclusive rights for promotion of international matches at the stadium. Again, its not the only thing, but when you look at the track record and this shows up on his resume, it just adds to him being a sh!t towards the existing organization.
As a kid growing up on Long Island, Chinaglia was my hero. As for Pele, I can say I played with him (granted, it was a Cosmos clinic and he was about 80 yards away from me on some drill, but still). CLAP CLAP --- CLAP CLAP CLAP --- CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP -- COSMOS!
Well, I guess I have a different view. I was a Cosmos season ticket holder and Chinaglia was definitely the least favorite player for me and my friends. It was hard to get excited about a guy who hung on that dumb 35 yard offside line, especially when you could watch true class players like Beckenbauer, Neeskens, Alberto, Bogie, etc. I'm not criticizing Giorgio for taking advantage of a dumb rule, but I just can't see how he could be anyone's favorite Cosmo.
Hey, that's a cheap shot! I totally agree. We need a proper sense of occassion. As for the CW stuff, I'm still much more angry with Zoff and Charlie for that than I am Chinaglia. Cleensheet, definite kudos for the Ricky Davis praise! Met him a few weeks ago, and he is a wonderful person. I had a poster of Davis and another of Chinaglia in my room. And one of Gerd Müller, too, who also was great at chillin' round the 35 and cleaning up the garbage. Buddle gave a nice impression last Sunday. Chinaglia wasn't my favorite Cosmo, but as a young striker, I just loved the way he could turn a game on one touch, and I'll always admire him for that (and yes, forgive him his considerable shortcomings). He brought us a lot of joy, and I don't think tomorrow night is the proper forum to voice any disapproval of his actions off-the-pitch. No one will know why you're booing, anyway. Let's not act like Scum.
But he scored goals!!! In 1978 I was 9 years old. Its not like I truly knew any formal training in soccer, it was still just a game played by foriegners where I was growing up. Defense? Hell, that's why a team has a goalkeeper. He was instant gratification for a kid (that didn't come out right). Sort of the way Dave Kingman was a "great" baseball player for the Mets. 35 home runs a year? Great! Who cares if he struck out 210 times, was universally hated by his teammates and the Mets would lose 100 games.
I assume you are asking about my avatar. It has nothing to do with soccer and everything to do with silly little drawings.
