Let's "Dynamo" the Red Bulls

Let me first say that a huge company like Red Bull taking an interest in this market is nothing but a positive development for this league.

But here's the problem: When Red Bull sells this team in a few years, we will have to change the name of the team again.

The Red Bull guys seem like agressive dedicated marketers, and they seem to know something about soccer, but much like Don Garber, they seem to have a tin ear (Real Salt Lake, Houston 1836, Chivas USA, etc.) when it comes to what will work in the United States.

They need to be educated. They need to be educated by us and by the people who they have gathered to help them run this team (Beckenbauer, Chinaglia, Messing, & Roth).

As we have learned from the Houston 1836/Houston Dynamo situation, team names can change very, very fast in MLS if there is enough public pressure to do so. So right now, we have New York Red Bulls, but we also have a little more than three weeks until Opening Day. About the same amount of time it took to re-brand the Houston team.

What I am suggesting is letting the Red Bull guys know that naming the team after their product is not acceptable. It's not acceptable because history shows that corporations don't hold onto sports teams forever. Corporations sell teams all the time. We need to let them know that we want a team name that will last beyond their ownership tenure.

They can name the stadium "Red Bull Arena". Fine. They can put Red Bull logos on all the uniforms. Also fine. They can dress up the new team in Red Bull colors. Fine again. But the name of the team should not be Red Bulls.

We need to do here what the Mexican community did in Houston. We need to torpedo the "Red Bulls" name before it goes much further.

As I have said many times on these boards, the name of this team should be "Cosmos." That is the name that should last for the next 100 years and beyond, no matter who owns the club.

We have a choice as a community here. We can either let the Red Bulls name happen to us -- and therefore know that another name-change will come in a few years -- or we can help empower Franz Beckenbauer, Giorgio Chinaglia, Shep Messing and Werner Roth to go to their new corporate benefactor and request that the "Cosmos" name be resurrected.

    That is the choice.

    Let's "Dynamo" the Red Bulls!

While it's not an established fact, it's certainly a possibility.

Anything is a possibility. He presented it as a fact. No one knows that it's a fact, yet I have seen Red Buill either going under or selling the team presented as a fact on these boards a number of times when it's nothing but the perspective of some people who don't like the name.

And you know what will happen - the team will be renamed and life will go on. A group of people will be upset, but if Red Bull is so unsuccessful that they have to bail or go under, how many people will be against changing the name anyway?

    Fair enough.

The prospect of teams potentially changing their names, logos, colors, and identities when their corporate sponsorship changes is a pretty onerous one though, IMO.

Gillette stadium in Foxboro MA was originally named CMGI. CMGI didn't make it.

fans of Cosmos and Giorgio eh? Want the Cosmos to be back?
Got $5 million lying around to buy the rights to the name?

Oh, fyi: Red Bull is spending $600 million a YEAR on marketing alone. But it seems to me they like Red Bull New York better than New York Cosmos.

Neither did PSINet or Enron or a bunch of others. The MCI Center turned into the Verizon Center this week. As far as facilities, no one notices. Team names is a different animal, of course, but the cause of this team changing would probablymean failure for Red Bull, thereby making the change palatable.

Thank You, for pete's sake this if the FIRST proper thought ive heard since I have heard of this rediculous thing, and not slobbering over the new $$$ and the Business end (they are getting a deal the new stadium has already been iced).

This is a fine buy the $$ sound good I hope they are enthused, BUT, We (the Fans) are the league, we are MLS fans, and american too , lets stop being embarrassed by this hiding this, or reinventing the wheel , the team can be the New York Metrostars (fully red full logo attired and colored) or at most NY Metrostar RedBulls or NY Metro Redbulls but thats it.

I live in Cleveland listen team Move (see San Jose) teams get sold see any MLS clubs We must protect the franchise and it s future and continuity from its new-savior itself for the fans of the league and most importantly current Metrostar fans.

I choose no, let it happen. RedBull New York is a great name. Nothing cheesy or wrong about it (plus the kit with the logo on it, wow :D but thats another subject). SV RedBull Salzburg too, just looking at that name, it looks good. Red Bull is a great company, they put tons of money into their business appoarch. For years they have been in 'extreme sports' supplying money to the sport and athletes that most people did not give the light of day. Look at them now. It looks like they are going strong and have found another niche to work with. Soccer. Plus is better than have four teams owned by the same company. I have never liked that. Now with Austrian experence and resources and of running a european team, I think Red Bull NY can reach the top and stay there now.
