http://www.century21construction.com/gif/p_riverfront.jpg http://members.aol.com/resurgencecity/bearday3.JPG It's where Metro were going to play their playoff games in 2002 before they spectacularly collapsed late in the season.
Please don't do a name change. Play somewhere else, but don't do a name change. Jesus effing Christ. This is beyond the point of absurd. MLS just needs to tell everyone to f*** off.
I posted a link to a similar article on the news for the day. Anyway, this kneejerk reaction is not well thought out. Reason 1: One of the regional headquarters for Red Bull is in New Jersey. I'm sure the company employs locals and gets taxed. Reason 2: Since Red Bull Arena will be in New Jersey, then I'm sure the taxes will remain in New Jersey. So, that taxpayer comment is kind of offbase...at least to my understanding of things. BTW, it wasn't as if the team would have been called Hudson County MetroStars.
"How would the taxpayers of Hudson County feel...?" Probably the same as usual- that they wished they techically lived in NYC instead of pretty much lived in NYC.
I don't think Zoffinger realizes that it won't be so easy to get them to change their name. I definitely think they would sooner play their games at a temporary NYC site than be forced to insert /New Jersey to the end.
I agree with this statement. Red Bull didn't go into this deal blind, I gotta believe that they new the 2006 lease was a done deal and that they would have to find alternatives if 2007 doesn't work out with NJSEA. They want New York in their name, and they will keep it. New York = big league, New Jersey doesn't (with all do respect to the Devils and Nets who are looking to move away from NJSEA as well). RBNY will find a temporary home for 2007 if the NJSEA plays hardball. They have a longer timeline than the Fire did when we moved to Naperville during the Soldier Field construction.
I want to just add my two cents. I hope that RBNY tells the policticians to F*** off because it's out of their control now! They have the approval for the new stadium, they have a lease that covers this year, and have the money backing to take them on if they want! Keep the NY! And this is coming from a DCU Fan!
Red Bull shouldnt be afraid to play at a smaller venue. The Fire games in Naperville had much more energy and vitality than those played at Soldier Field. The politicians nail us for massive taxes and spend our money like drunken sailors. Then they have the audacity to tell us what to call our soccer team! Could this be the low point in NJ politickin'
Once this issue has been milked for all the column inches it is worth. New Jersey will be incorporated into the name and they will play at Giants Stadium.
It would be kind of funny if they didnt work it out though. At least it gives us something interesting to do while we wait for the season to Kick off.
