red bull new york? could you imagine the pittsburgh steelers becoming the pittsburgh heinz ketcup? so awful.
How many people think the league is going to be much more profitable in the near future than it has been in the past? Also, how many people think dunkel must be a complete moron, because he used the Pittsburgh Steelers to illustrate that naming teams after corporations is a bad thing?
well, part correct. it was named based on the region being a hotbed of steel production. Armco and J&L being the largest. but i would say there is a difference being naming the the steelers. not a corporate name. kind of like the fire or crew.
ah the brain trust that is bigsoccer. you are absolutely right. it was a fantastic idea. from a financial perspective it was the right move. the league is rather stagnant and maybe the money injection will be nice, but how many fans of the sport welcome the idea of teams being named after products? i really don't. sorry if that makes me a fool, but i don't think this is the end, it might be the beginning. sponsorship is fine, but why does the sport need to go in this direction to survive?
You REALLY should get a straight red for starting up YET ANOTHER RED BULL WHINING THREAD. There are a bazillion threads across the MLS forums where you can complain. Absolutely ridiculous.
Why does it matter so much that its named after a product or something else?? The Tornto Blue jays or Labatts Blue Ribbon beer isnt a big deal teams get named after all kinds of things, places historical events and products. No biggie
Wait wait... so if Proctor and Gamble buys the Fire and renames them the Chicago BOUNCE - changes your colors and makes your whole team identity their brand identity... changes your jerseys to look like a fabric softener box.. you would say that's a good thing? If Bounce sounds too good try Snuggle, because the trend for this kind of thing is that no limit taste or judgement comes into play once another dam is broken. Some of these stadium names are ridiculous. Man, this site really scares me sometimes, because I think US soccer fans are generally a little smart. No one cares that we are being transformed from humans to mere consumers.
Ah, yes. One team did it so it must be happening to everyone and the league must be headed to the precipice. Yeah, these stadium names are stupid since pretty much every other sport is doing the same freaking thing. Really a bad idea to name your stadium after some of the most recognizeable brands in the country. What a horrible idea. Retard.
I never thought I'd see the day where people were singing the praises of the METROSTARS as a team name. It's stupid. It's REALLY stupid. In a year, the colors will be more settled, the name will be more official, and you'll be close to having a stadium. Seriously - Metrofans? Were you a fan of the team when that retarded TAXI CAB was the logo? Hmm? And you think the Red Bull Logo Sucks? I think the sheild needs some work, but it's a damn site better logo than 60% of the teams in this league.
Yes it does, but as I have explained to the brain-injury caravan in other threads, what makes doing it once mean it will happen every time? They don't accept every transfer offer. Ownership groups haven't cut the mustard. They don't just jump up and down excited and hand over the keys every time someone shows interest. These are savvy business men.
But it doesn't mean it will, which is exactly what all the negative people are trying to say. What honest, concrete information shows that because one company has brought two of the thousands of soccer teams in the world and put their name on them, corporations are going to line up to change team names in MLS? There is none. It's all in the minds of Big Soccer people. One company. Two teams. That's it.
MLSnet.com: This sale is the first of its kind in the league. Is this something you see as the start of a new trend and is this the kind of deal that the league would like to see in other markets? Don Garber: No. Really, this was not intended to come down the way it did. It just turned out, from our first discussions with Red Bull that were brokered by [German soccer legend] Franz Beckenbauer and our friends from adidas, that their interest in this sport turned into such a strong interest that it moved to an interest in buying one of our teams. I don't see this as a trend. I don't see this as a trend in our league or other leagues.
Wow, I'm gone for two days and BigSoccer regresses 10 years, that'll teach me to stay away for so long I guess.
Not me. You need to do your history, Cleazer. US Steel never had any interest in the team. In fact, it was another steel company who suggested they use the marketing logo for steel in general twenty years after they changed their name from the Pirates. Steelers is definently named after the workers and the logo is a generic logo of steel.
regardless of what tradition they had it's basically starting over. if the league plans to be around for years and years will red bull? what if the company goes belly up in ten years. someone answer that. maybe in ten years they will be sold to bmw and can be the new york beemers. i guess i like the idea of sponsorship and naming rites to the stadium better than renaming a team, but i also think the idea of franchises is pretty ridiculous as well. hell they could have even sold the naming rites to the league ala barclay's. i suppose some people are tired of reading about it. fine. if you don't like to think about sports than bully you. i really think stuff like this is ok to chat about. maybe open a dialogue and get people chatting about it. fact is out of the maybe ten people i talked to about it today, all thought it was a bad idea. now i guess that is a minority but if you want people to take the sport seriously moves like this that create billboard teams is only going to harm things in the long run. i also know for a fact that many at mls were not into the idea of doing this but they were offered so much they had no choice. it is a business. you are correct with that one. but really, any big company with interest could do it. i am not saying it will, but honda or sierra mist could go the extra step and certainly take ownership of a team as it really is a fantastic marketing move to have a whole team named after your product.

Maybe because we liked it? WTF are you to say what METROSTARS fans should like? Honestly. No one claimed it the best name in the world, the same way we said that we wouldn't want to replace the name with something worse. Jesus Christ...don't you people get it?
I couldn't agree more. I am in favor of anything to get rid of the name Metrostars. I do have one question though.......from what I have read they are naming the team Red Bull New York. Why are they doing that if the team is going to have a stadium in New Jersey? Are they going to rename the team when they move to their new stadium?
