Surely you mean "Gooners," right? Not Goners. And anyway, it CAN'T be Gooners. A good deal of us also support MUFC.

A whole s*** load of EPL clubs are supported by 101ers. Arsenal, Liverpool, Man Utd, Tottenham, et f***ing cetera.

I will call the team "New York," just like AC Milan is "Milan," and Olympique Lyonnaise is "Lyon"

    New Nickname Idea!!!

So, I understand that this purchase will be good for the team, but I can't bring myself to chant for Red Bull or Red Bulls. Nicknames like Reds seem made up and are unlikely to catch on. At the same time, Metro or MetrStars is dead and not coming back.

So, what's the solution. To me, it seems the best possible choice is NEW YORK!!! That's right, simply New York (come on, Jersey people, don't take offense).

I think it would work. New York is the greatest city in the world and invokes powerful reactions. Syllable-wise it was also works like Metro/Metros. So, we can keep all the old chants, and replace Metro w/ New York. At the same time, it's natural and I think would catch on very well.

So, to me, it seems New York is the best possible solution for the situation. What do you think?

I think you should get into advertising cause that idea is just sooo unique ...the industry needs fresh new ideas like that!

Yeah, no sh*t. :) You took my post too literally. Regardless, you don't want our nickname to be the "Goners" do you? That wouldn't be a good omen. ;)

I don't have a new nickname suggestion..but since you have the word "bulls" in your team name, you should definetly encorporate the "ole" chant into your games...I don't mean the Brazilian "Ole, Ole, ole" song made popular in the '94 World Cup, but rather the shouting of "Ole" after each successful New York Red Bull's pass. It's primarily done when your team has just scored or is playing really well. I believe it's originally spanish, since it's clearly rooted in the bull fighting tradition. It looks/sounds awesome and I think it really f's with the opposing teams head.

    Re: New Nickname Idea!!!

Every single name sounds "made up" at some point, because it is made up. Metrostars, Red Bull (and it wasn't even the Austrians that came up with that one - Mateschitz just took it all straight from the Thai drink he co-opted) and so on. The idea of "Reds" is simply that they wear red jerseys - there's a simple, logical, visual connection. Plus, it's IN the name that RBNY is going to blitz us with, but it is not THE name.

As for New York, eh. It's just too broad to signify anything, in a lot of situations. Don't get me wrong, here on the boards we'll probably use New York as a shorthand, or in conversation with someone who knows nothing about MLS, someone could get away with saying they "support New York". That makes a lot of sense. But I'm not sure it'd go over in all sorts of songs and stuff like that. It's a little...not quite there. "Metros" will do fine in a lot of the songs, I think.
The more I think about jamison's NY96, the more I like it, too. It's got that little something specific about it - you know we're talking about FKA Metrostars. Once again...flexibility. If you pull out a New York '96, or even a New York, I'm sure we'll all know what you're talking about.

    That's just my thoughts, YMMV.

Speaking for myself, anything associated with "Bull" ain't gettin' spoken/sung/written with regard to this team.

    Reds is more than acceptable.

This is the first time in a long time that I've been excited for the start of a new season, and that's all that really matters.

    Re: New Nickname Idea!!!

But wouldn't the other supporters say ole since we would be the bulls obviously and they would say ole to act like the matador?

ANyway the new name opens us up to alot worse negitive nicknames than Metroturds.

Re: Nevermind what we're "officially" named, we'll refer to ourselves as...

I'm going to call it whatever the new management programs me to call it. They'll flash the nickname across the huge screen, send weekly emails with it, dispatch their interns to phone us ol' time fans, and make it a part of their overall branding strategy. I'm not too wedded to the winless Metro name such that it needs to be integrated with our new name. Imagine a country nicknamed the United States of Colonial America or a baseball team nicknamed the New York/Brooklyn Mets/Dodgers. That management has changed doesn't mean we can't look back with fondness. They got over it and so will we.

I've got my old jerseys hanging in the closet and, when so motivated, will wear 'em with pride when cheering our team. I'd rather see management turn over a new leaf, bring back Howard ten years from now as a Savarese figure and let us gloss over the dark, championship-less days of yore, especially if this effects a new winning 'tude in the stands and on the field.

Anyway, I'd probably choose "Red Bulls" over the alternatives. "Bulls" is a Chicago basketball team and "Reds" is too easily confused with "Revs".

    Huh?
I can't even think of a speech impediment that would make that so.

    Re: New Nickname Idea!!!

Thanks for bringing that up:confused: I was really trying not to think about it. You really can't manipulate "MetroStars" too much without a huge stretch (Metroturds, Metrotards, Mutts, all very creative) , but Red Bulls...

Think Happy Thoughts (I tell myself), Think Happy Thoughts. :( Not working...

"New York"...no way. Harrison is in New Jersey. The next team should be in Brooklyn/Queens and it should be the New York Metros. No if, and, buts.

Refer to Red Bull New York as Red Bull. It is not NY; it is not New Jersey. It is a New York/New Jersey team that got bought by Red Bull. Let them have their name and locate the team inside a sprawling soccer metropolis.

Yeah, OK, but that's a mouthful. Originally in this thread we were talking about how you would refer to our team in casual conversation. You and everyone around you will quickly tire of saying, "Red Bull F.C. of New York," 'round the water cooler. Know what I mean? Example:

1st guy: Hey did you see Red Bull F.C. of New York play D.C. last night?

2nd guy: Yeah, that was incredible! When Red Bull F.C. of New York went three goals up inside the first half, I thought it was too good to be true!

1st guy: I know, I know! But then, when Red Bull F.C. of New York got the fourth right before the halftime whistle, I wept actually tears of joy.

2nd guy: Yeah, it was a thing of beauty. Feels pretty good to be a Red Bull F.C. of New York fan, doesn't it? Yes, I do believe Red Bull F.C. of New York will make a serious run for the cup this year. Hey, I'm considering buying Red Bull F.C. of New York season tickets for the whole fam! Each of us has already got a Red Bull F.C. of New York shirt and scarf.

You see my point. So, what are you gonna call 'em when you're talkin' about 'em?

Oh, just to disclaim, I think this is awful. I hope this is the last of all product team names. But as the team is now call Red Bull New York, there is no other way you can call them anything else...The Bulls are in Chicago and the Reds are in Ohio.

Really?! Not bad, but I think you'll be calling 'em the Bullies all by yourself. Why would anyone call 'em Metro Bullies or Bullies? C'mon, now that they're officially Red Bull New York--or New York Red Bulls, there are whole other threads arguing THAT point--you're gonna call 'em Reds, Bulls, New York, or some such, ain't choo? Metro Bullies is even more confusing/alienating than the aforementioned Metro Reds (no one will get it 'cept us hardcores).
