Deportivo Coruna's Portuguese international centre-back Jorge Andrade is likely to miss the World Cup after tearing the patellar tendon in his left knee during his side's 3-2 defeat at Barcelona on Saturday.

Deportivo said that the 27-year-old, who is a regular in the Portugal national team, would undergo surgery on the knee on Sunday, but they did not give an estimated recovery time.

Andrade was stretchered off the pitch in the 58th minute after colliding with his own keeper Jose Molina as the two players tried to stop Barca striker Samuel Eto'o reaching the ball.

I guess Meira moves into the starting XI, but beyond that, we're not all that deep at the CB position. Let's hope this is the extent of our injury problems for the summer.

Yep, confirmed by the A Bola website.

    "

6 months for recovery...now it's done. I wonder who Scolari is going to call now. Ricardo Silva? :D

    who will replace him?

Meira and Cavalho together wont be good they are both slow and
will get swept aside by fast forwards if they get caught.

I dunno we have good CBs but really Andrade is a key player for us thats why
he plays every single game he is pure class.
After hearing this Im not as excited about the WC anymore.

Oh well I just hope that the replacements can rise to the occasion and give their best performance in the world cup and make up for Andrades injury.

he tore a tendon not a ligament. not as bad but still enough to most likely keep him out. hopefully it wasn't as bad as first thought. maybe pedro emanuel should have delayed his decision with angola;)

He said this out of solidarity to Andrade. Andrade will not go to the WC if he knows he can't recover in time. Im so upset my this, but after sleeping on it I realized the greatness of Fernando Meira. Meira is 6 foot 2 and also very intimidating. He's not as fast as Andrade but he will plug in nicelly. SSo now we have to find depth. Scolari will take probably Tonel, Emanuel, or Ze Castro.

This is bad news for Portugal's squad and for Deportivo La Coruña. Reports say its going to take 6 months to heal after his surgery which takes place on Sunday. This means that he will definitely will not be able to participate in the World Cup. Hopefully some miracle happens and he'll be able to get back on the pitch because if he can't then we're going to need someone to step up and take Andrade's big responsibility in the CB position. :(

andrade will be missed but with the likes of carvalho, meira, caneira, miguel, and ferreira i think we'll still be fine.

it's a ronaldo or deco injury i pray we don't get!

since ferreira has been used somewhat at the LB position lately for chelsea and seems to have done fairly well, i'd like to see scolari employ this backline:

    miguel------meira----carvalho------ferreira

this would add excellent attacking and crossing options down both flanks while keeping our central pillars tall and strong.

    what do you guys think?

This f^ckin sucks. I personally think that Andrade is our best defender and best CB. Kinda figures we'd get an injury or two before the WC - but losing Andrade is a real blow!

Why not a player like Simao, Boa Morte, Costinha?

It would take a miracle for him to play at the WC, no ones banking on it.
This injury usually means he has to stay in a cast for 6 weeks and then not even do ANY rehabilitation for atleast 3 months!!! So basically we're screwed!
Scolari's gotta call up a player like Pedro Emanuel, Ze Castro, or maybe even look at bringing up Beto or Xavier Abel.

Meira is world class, its just to bad he gets his start due to an Andrade injury. It just takes away from our depth, which sucks. I would start the following

    Ricardo
    Valente
    Meira
    Andrade
    Miguel

    tHIS SUCKS REALLY BAD.

I think Scolari has to do that now. Only because we've lost our best defensive Defensemen in Andrade. Nuno Valente is too offensively minded to have him on the field without an Andrade to cleanup. Atleast with Ferreira out there, he'll bring another added quality- backtracking and aggressive but legal tackling.

i actually think carvalho will prove to be the best CB in the world after the WC. i really believe he is under appreciated by chelsea and portuguese supporters.

This sucks. It would be a lot worse if we lost Deco but this is still pretty bad since we don't have guys like J. Costa and Couto in their prime. I honestly think that we should use Meira and Emanuel.
