We had Saturday all planned out.... My boys game at 9:00. FCD v. 1836 at 11:30 Closed door National Team practice at 1:30. But with all this ice & rain crap they're predicting, how will we know if there have been any cancellations???????? We'll be there, rain or shine, but what are the chances that the "wintery mix" I'm hearing about, will cause them to cancel all these events??? and how will we know if they're cxld???????
I doubt the game will be canceled as the game is on espn2. And I bet they don't cancel the Saturday events either, unless the field is just unplayable
I confirmed with the FCD office. The game on Sunday will not be canceled. The Saturday events have a slim to 0 chance of being canceled as well.
I actually played a game during a tornado watch (warning? Whichever one is the less serious of the 2) when I was little. The clouds were all low and moving. It was quite scary.
It would have to be real bad for the USMNT game to be cancelled. No one like giving out refunds especially refunds for soccer tickets. And it would leave ESPN2 with a 2 hour slot to fill. As for Saturdays events, now those I can see being cancelled.
Low of 26 tonight......one evening of that and freezing rain could easily start sticking to the ground.
As I prepare for this weekends game I think back to other local weather doozies. This will make the coldest game I ever go to watch. I remember the Cruz Azul v D. Burn game. I think it was in the upper 30's. I also remember the USNT, (w/ Bora) vs Uruguay. A spring front blew through w/ Tornado sirens blowing. Players, coaches, and fans sprinted to the shelter in the Cotton Bowl. The metal side advertising signs were blowing past the players like dice. We were treated to a magnificent hail storm that coated the turf w/ marble sized hail. But, the most dangerous by far, was the infamous Tornado vs FCD scrimmage. Where we were all feet away from being incinerated by a gigantic lightning bolt. The ride home was equally entertaining as we encountered sustained hurricane force winds and tornados to the left and right. Am I missing anything worse?
I think I remember watching that Uruguay game on TV. Wasn't Jurgen Sommer in goal and cost us the lead due to a mistake?
ESPN, and for that matter any other network in the US running a live event, programs an alternative show to run if the live event goes down. In the case of ESPN they cue up an older event, somtimes a event of a similar nature, sometimes it's something like Worlds Strongest Man. It's sitting there ready to run at a moments notice.
The storm during the 8-1 game was not as bad as those you listed but it was coming down pretty good. There was a huge storm with lightning and hail during a US Open Cup game back in 99 or 00 played against a team from Tennessee. The storm hit one minute before half, the refs sent everybody to the lockerrooms. The storm lasted about 45 minutes. When it was over, the two teams played the last minute of the first half and proceeded to play the second half right away.
Some comedian use to use the line, "you know its late when you click on ESPN and you see two white guys boxing"
I'm 95% sure that the pre-production meetings for the World's Strongest shows include scotch and marijuana consumption. "Hey....let's have them drag a train engine down an airport runway!" "No, no.....let's make them throw giant boulders onto pedestals, dude" "Yeah.....that would be killer"
That was a fun night. That was probably the first time I'd ever seen the point of impact from a lightning strike and certainly the first time I'd ever seen sparks shoot up out of the ground as a result.
