Re: Freddy Adu to Chelsea? Howard first qualified on appeal when he didnt meet the cap qualifications and Hungary wasnt yet a part of the EU. Of course it has to wait till Freddy's 18 to go through, but he doesnt necessarily need the caps to get a WP
Re: Freddy Adu to Chelsea? Howard's appeal was based on the fact that Hungary was about to become part of the EU and the fact that his mother is Hungarian. Howard doesn't need a work permit for England. He can play in England WITHOUT a work permit. His status as a citizen of Hungary is all he needs to qualify to work anywhere within the borders of the EU. Adu has to have a work permit to play in England since the USA is not about to join the EU any time soon.
Re: Freddy Adu to Chelsea? Yes, but the price will be zero in 20 months when Freddy's 4-year MLS deal expires. The expiration of Freddy's contract -- which he surely will not renew or extend -- limits MLS's bargaining power. As does the reality that Freddy can't play on the first team of any buyer until June, 2007.
Re: Freddy Adu to Chelsea? We need an Arab Sheik to meet with Mourinho to get to the bottom of this story!
Re: Freddy Adu to Chelsea? Are you saying there is no way for Freddy to play in England after he turns 18 and before he meets the cap qualifications, I'm not an expert but I thought there was a way for exceptional talents/cases
Re: Freddy Adu to Chelsea? Well... If MLS is anything at all like European teams, that statement means a deal is very close...
Re: Freddy Adu to Chelsea? I'm saying that Freddy, unlike Tim Howard (the example you used) will have to have a work permit to play in England. I made no mention of how he could obtain a work permit.
Re: Freddy Adu to Chelsea? True, but Euro passports are easy to get. I got one. If Chelsea wants him (which I seriously question) they will find a way to get him. By the way, I think he needs to go to the Dutch Eredivisie where he can kick butt, then move to a big club. My two cents.
Re: Freddy Adu to Chelsea? Check this out: Arena tells Adu best route to US team This, to me, sounds like Adu is staying with DC this year, but of course in the secret world of transfers, who really knows for sure until it happens (or doesn't happen).
Re: Freddy Adu to Chelsea? Could he be loaned to a Belgian/Dutch team, have his entire family relocate (except his Dad!) and then when he's 18 or whatever the rule is, he's back with Chelsea and then he fights it out for a starting spot?
Re: Freddy Adu to Chelsea? HE CANNOT TRANSFER OUTSIDE THE USA UNTIL JUNE 2ND, 2007. That is his 18th birthday. It is against FIFA regulations for him to transfer internationally until he is 18.
http://www.football365.com/news/transfer_gossip/index.shtml Says Adu is bound for chelsea but even more interesting is the article says by then Adu will be the youngest player to have played at the world cup. Umm did I miss something or is it pretty clear Freddy is NOT going to the world cup do the brits know something we don't ??
Re: Freddy Adu to Chelsea? then why does his agent mention the age 17? "We are mindful of the fact that he will turn 17 in the summer. At this stage, nothing has truly been decided."
Re: Freddy Adu to Chelsea? Why does 2. a) not create a sufficient loophole? Who decides what the parents' motivation is for moving to another country? Could Adu's mother not get some random job in the UK (even as secretary, etc.), one not tied to a soccer club, and thus free Freddy and UK soccer clubs from the restraints imposed by this article?
Re: Freddy Adu to Chelsea? How the hell do I know why he mentioned Freddy will be turning 17 in the summer? Maybe he wanted to let everyone know that it'll be only another year after that he can transfer.
Is your name Bruce Arena? If not then you dont know if Freddy will be at the World Cup. Plus can we stop with all these Freddy going to Chelsea threads!
Why is there some belief around here that anything Freddy Adu-related gets placed in the USMNT N&A forum? HE's played eight minutes and this isn't directly USMNT related.
