I believe Nick Hornby wrote about that game in Fever Pitch.

I was thinking it was in My Favourite Year (a book Hornby edited) but I'm not sure.

It truly is an amazing run for Reading. They have already eliminated 8 teams from the competition, and here it is, only the first weekend in February.

A tough stretch of matches for Reading, with five in two weeks and four of them away from home, beginning with today's victory over Crewe. They travel to Birmingham City for an FA Cup replay on Tuesday, followed by a home match the following Friday against Southampton. The following Tuesday is the big one against Sheffield United, and they close out the road trip against Luton.

If the Royals continue their form, they will return home possibly having secured a spot in the playoffs with 11 matches remaining.

Turns out it was both this book and Fever Pitch. In My Favourite Year, the short essay "The Abbey Habit" (Hornby's own contribution to the book of essays that he edited) chronicles the 83/84 Cambridge United season.

If you liked Fever Pitch, I highly recommend My Favourite Year.

    Magic number update:

25 points guarantees automatic promotion (again, that's if Leeds win out and Sheffield Utd. stay ahead of or even with Leeds).

And a meager 10 points in their 14 remaining games guarantees a place in the promotion playoffs (in the dummies count, someone else can be welcome to go through and check schedules to calculate mathematical probablilities) - that's if Wolves win out.

Plymouth, at 17th, are the lowest team that could catch Reading on points.

And, while they're disappointed that crewe made a top-bottom affair into a great match, it's pretty clear Coppell will not be distracted by the FA Cup. Not worth a YA thread this time, as looking very unlikely Marcus or Convey will make the bench: Coppell is sending the team that played last time, and then filling the bench with youth teamers (including the australian youth keeper).

Sheffield United's loss to Watford doesn't reduce Reading's magic number for promotion but it does help in the title race, for what it's worth.

Too bad Coppell isn't going for FA Cup glory. It would've been great to see a "Bobbito Brace Beats Birmingham" headline.

    How about instead...
"Bobby's brace give Birmingham the Royals Blues".....

    (bad enough?)

That may be the case, but apparently Marcus baked the team brownies this morning....
