To take the book idea...here are a few movies I have seen, feel free to list whatever I missed... 1. Football Factory (2 thumbs up) - loved it, who would have thought following Chelsea hooligans around for 2 hours would entertain me 2. Goal (thumb down) - horribly acted and very predictable, cool cameos from pros (Shearer, Beckham, Raul) but could have been better 3. Mean Machine (2 thumbs up) - loved it, I am a bit of a Vinnie Jones fan, so I was partial before seeing it, but the addition of Danny Dyer helped and I found it hilarious 4. Fever Pitch (thumb up) - calm yourself Red Sox fans, I mean the real one, good movie and I enjoyed him refusing to live too far away from Highbury 5. Shaolin Soccer (thumb up) - enjoyed it a lot 6. Bend It Like Beckham (thumb up) - good story set around the sport...might want to change the end though 7. Green Street Hooligans (2 thumbs up) - enjoyed it and enjoyed seeing it in a theatre where the movie starts and ends...with a few hooligans who made noise before it started 8. Kicking and Screaming (no thumb) - it was ok, I thought it was going to be A LOT better there is my list, yes I forgot the Stallone movie, but I don't remember the name and have not seen it in so long that I cannot give my opinion of it...
How could you leave out: Soccer Dog: The Movie and Soccer Dog: European Cup FYI...The Stallone movie was Victory
huh. i didnt even know they made a movie about Fever Pitch (except the Sandler one). it was a good book. now where the hell will i find a copy to view? not netflix... im interested in the hooligan flicks, but still not sure where i would be able to get a copy from. i doubt my local video stores have them. maybe they do. i rarely rent anyways. Mean Machine was an entertaining remake. Vinny is awesome. Soccer dog was on tv the other day. lol. so bad.
Gregory's Girl - it'll help yee unnerstan Stevie Nix - Scottish boy plays soccer, loses spot on team to girl, falls in love for girl.... History of Soccer- The beautiful game - - a 6 part DVD from the BBC(?) that was sensational Anything from Coerver - if you want to teach your kids soccer skills, the Coerver stuff is outstanding. Zico also had a skills series that was pretty good. have in my own collection and, therefore, a thumbs up to Bend it Like Beckham, A Shot at Glory , Mean Machine (the Vinny Jones remake) and the original Fever Pitch.
I rented it from Waterfront Video in Burlington, VT, but that probably doesn't help you. I'm guessing that any decent independent video rental store (with a reasonable foreign film selection) will have it. I also rented "The Cup" from the same place. Like many "soccer" movies, it's not particularly about soccer, but it is beautifully shot and is a unique take on the global reach and universal appeal of the game.
http://www.netflix.com/MovieDisplay?movieid=60003176&trkid=90529 sure you can, its in my netflix queue
I rented it at Hollywood Video up the road from me in Arlington...I am sure a video store near you would have it... the hooligan movies might be harder...
Don't forget Real Madrid's own film, "Real, the Movie." Its supposed to be released in the U.S. but not sure when. It'll eventually end up on DVD.
I've got two on my wishlist: "When Saturday Comes" with Peter Postlethwaite and Sean Bean; and "The Goalie's Anxiety at the Penalty Kick" by Wim Wenders (although it may have nothing to do with the sport for all I know). BTW, when ordering Fever Pitch, not only watch out for the baseball retread, but there's also a really horrible B movie of the same name with Farrah's ex.
I bought beer on New Year's Eve from someplace near Revere that had a HUGE Soccer Dog poster. Apparently the owner's son wrote the film. Hooligans? Whoever could you mean...
I think I need to rent this one http://www.netflix.com/MovieDisplay?movieid=70022954&trkid=181036&strkid=29598359_3_0
Speaking of which...is Game of their Lives ever going to be released? Yeah, I know, it was in, like, six theaters last year. How much could it cost them to put the darned thing out on DVD? Heck, if I can find the Turkish version of Star Wars on DVD, how hard could it be? Ted.
