you sure about the last name, Frangueiro or Fangueiro (as in the guy who played w/ U. Leiria last year and even scored a goal against Benfica?) Because Fangueiro went to play in England somewhere (last time I checked)

Fangueiro is working out with the Metrostars and he's here from Millwall, in England.

that's the guy from U. Leiria then. He originally came from Vit. Guimaraes and played w/ Nuno Assis. Transferred to U.Leiria for at least a season and again, he scored against Benfica at home in a game I think they won. I recall him being a right-wing, decent skills and speed is his biggest advantage. If he's practicing with the MetroStars I don't see any reason why he wouldn't impress them. Where did you hear about this?

more on Carlos Fangueiro at the bottom of the page

    Metros focus on foreigners

After auditioning more than two dozen foreign players, the MetroStars settled on a pair of midfielders from last week's training sessions at the Giants Stadium practice bubble. Portuguese attacking midfielder Carlos Fangueiro and French defensive midfielder Elie Ikangu impressed Metros coach Mo Johnston enough to earn invites to the team's spring training camp in Bradenton, Florida.

Fangueiro, who currently plays for English club Millwall, could emerge as the team's replacement for Amado Guevara. A veteran of the Portuguese first division before playing in England, Fangueiro is 29 years old and would count as a senior international if acquired.

Ikangu impressed Metros coaches enough to draw comparison to Chelsea midfielder and French international Claude Makelele, widely regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world.

"Middlesbrough had him in but they felt he was too small for the Premiership," Johnston said of Ikangu. "Hopefully we can build him up. He's got all the tools, he's very aware about everything that is going on around him. He's impressed the whole week."

One player who did not make the cut after last week's foreign player camp was Chelsea reserve team midfielder Joe Keenan.

Johnston also confirmed that Canadian internationals Adrian Serioux and Ante Jazic will join the MetroStars in Bradenton. Serioux is a defensive midfielder who also played for Millwall recently while Jazic is a left back/left midfielder who is currently tied to Russian club Kuban Krasnodar.

    Will Amado show?

The MetroStars officially begin preparations for the 2006 season on Wednesday when the team convenes at the Giants Stadium practice bubble.

The practice session could serve as the first real clue as to whether the disgruntled Guevara has a future with the club, or if he is choosing to continue his war with Lalas. Look for Guevara to miss the practice session and for the team to respond by fining him heavily.

    The soap opera continues.

No, he's much more experienced. I really don't know how a decent player goes from a Portuguese 1st Division mid-table team to a II Divison team in England to a MLS team! :(

they have certain similarities: they both play right wing (I don't know how this article says Fangueiro might be taking Guevara's spot if they play different positions), they're both quick but Fangueiro has more experience, crosses better and is more technical (tecnicista= better with the ball)

sorry Frank, I thought you were talking about Carlitos ex-benfica and ex-Estoril. Now I know who you're talking about. My bad. Yes, that Carlitos and Fangueiro are very similar players, perhaps Carlitos being a little better player IMO.

his going to turn 30 at the end of the year, if his healthy and they got a international spot he easily make the team. He will be a fan favorite,
his no Paulo Futre but he can play the game.
