Technical director Julio Cesar Cortes has brought together 25 players for the defending Central American champions, who won the competition for the first time in 2001. But they were knocked out by arch-rival El Salvador in last year's Gold Cup finals, who have 27 players together in a training camp. The two sides will face each other on 15 and 19 January in California. http://www.concacaf.com/news/article.page/1154

Honduras knocks off stubborn Nicaragua 2:0 Honduras opened their Central Zone Gold Cup qualifying campaign with a modest victory, easing to a 2:0 victory against Nicaragua in the first match for both teams in the UNCAF Copa de Naciones on Tuesday. http://concacaf.com/news/article.page/1208
El Salvador top of table after another win in Copa de Naciones Surprising El Salvador rests atop the table after the third day of the Central Zone qualifying tournament for the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup, winning their second match of the tournament in defeating Nicaragua 3:0 on Wednesday. El Salvador is on six points from their three matches after the victory, ahead of Costa Rica, which has four points after their 1:1 draw with Guatemala in the second match Wednesday at Estadio Rommel Fernandez in Panamá. http://concacaf.com/news/article.page/1214
I don't think Steve Sampson is going to last through WC qualifying, or even up to qualifying. Costa Rica has plenty of WC squad veterans at this tournament (Fonseca, Wallace, Marin, Bryce, Drummond, Castro, Cordero--others?) and should be playing better. Then again, Sampson's a very inexpensive option for now--they can hire their real WC coach after he's been canned. On the other hand, El Salvador look better than I thought they would, and were unlucky not to come away with a draw in the CR match. Are most of their players in the domestic league? I was surprised Quintanilla didn't get the ES call from DC United after seeing Ruiz and Garcia play for Guatemala. I look forward to the Honduras-El Salvador match on Saturday.
Costa Rica up 1-0 on Nicaragua at halftime, Scott with the goal. Looks like maybe 100 people in the stands.
This tournament is the biggest disgrace mankind has ever seen...what an embarrasment........ No team is even trying, about 50 people in the stands.... who cares? I say kill the damn tournament and play it somewhere else and with teams and players that care...
Forza guanaco! ES hung around and hung around and beat Honduras 1-0 on a gorgeous free kick. I disagree that the tournament has no meaning--it's a fresh sheet of Crisco for Sampson (and Ucles?) to fry on and it's a chance for ES and Guate to maybe solidify their coaches. Maybe it has no meaning in itself, more as a precursor. And since qualifying starts in Feb 2004, those who make the Gold Cup will be getting some valuable quality games in ahead of time.
Despite playing a fourth match in a week, the young legs of El Salvador carried it to a 1:0 victory against Honduras and to the top of the table in Central Zone qualifying for the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the UNCAF Copa de Naciones. A stunning free kick from Gilberto Murgas nine minutes from full time gave El Salvador their third victory in the tournament, and all but sealed one of the three berths on offer for the Gold Cup finals, set for later this summer. Earlier, Costa Rica was again made to once again struggle, but thanks to Erick Scott still came away with victory by the only goal in the match against Nicaragua. http://concacaf.com/news/article.page/1216
que partido mas malo y aburrido ya no se ven esas batallas de futbol con destellos de genialidad, al salvador con ese grp le ira muy mal en copa de oro. lo unico sobresaliente, el gol!
