J-League gears up for the future

TOKYO: The J-League is charting plans to expand the second division to 18 teams from the current 13 in 2010 to meet the growing demands of an increasing number of clubs hoping to join the league.

Based on a recent study, nearly 30-50 clubs in Japan will be seeking entry into the J-League in the near future, said Masaru Suzuki, chairman of the J-League. “Joining the J-League is a dream for all clubs in Japan and we want to give them a fair chance,” said Suzuki. “On the other hand, we have to be conscious about the quality and level of clubs intending to join us.”

“Our objective is to strengthen the J-2.”

The plan stipulates that clubs seeking membership have an average attendance of 3,000 or more and annual operating revenue of at least 150 million yen ($1.3million).

Both the J-1 and J-2 leagues kick off this season March 4. Thirty-four matches will be played in J-1 and 52 matches in J-2 as 13 clubs in the latter category play four rounds each.

Eh? Surely they would play 48 matches then, as in playing 4 rounds against 12 opponents in a 13-team league.

Either way, it's daft. 48 matches to sort out 13 teams ? It's not as though, f/ex, Kusatsu v Mito needs to take place four times in order to maximise the season's revenue, I wouldn't have thought. Better to have 3 rounds and end have 36 matches, surely ?

That uniform is very Ganzi. But either get rid of the numbers or get rid of Nissan!

    Re: J2's Expansion plans

They are playing 48 matches. There will 52 rounds with 4 rounds bye per club... Consider this: the 14th club is "no opponent." On your match day, if you get matched up with "the 14th club", you don't have a game.

Therefore 52 rounds, 48 matches per club!!

Yea... just like JNT's jersey, the numbers on the front sux.

Will J2 be expanded to 22? I thought that both J1 and J2 would have 18 clubs, as in the German Bundesliga.

    Associate Membership:
Clubs seeking full membership are eligible for associate membership of the league if club management by full-time executive directors is sound. The newly established Advisor Team helps associate members' entry into the second division. Rosso Kumamoto, FC Ryukyu, SC Tochigi, and FC Horikoshi (Takasaki) come to mind. Kumamoto have the best chance of getting full membership.

    Criteria for Full Membership:

Anyway I think it is better you continue to post here than make English version blog.

If you wanna see a close up design of the new uniforms, go to http://www.frontale.co.jp/2006_new_org/page_17.html and just place the mouse over the home and away uniform on the left and right. (Don't click them... if may take 10-20 sec to load the pic, so leave the mouse on the uniform)
