He's also a Non-EU. Though he is HUGE, young, and rapidly improving.

Still, as Asta said, I'd rather have Kompany. They are probably the two best young defenders in Belgium, but Kompany is younger and has a European passport.

Here are some pictures of him being huge:

u must admitt that puyol cannot continue to play at the intensity he does for much longer he will slow down and then rely on his positioning and reading of the game. i like marquez but he is a little on the slow side so a young strong speedster is what we need.

If Puyol remains fit he can still be an athletic defender well into his 30s. (See Cafu, Thuram, Maldini, Costacurta) Even if Puyol slows considerably, we won't need a speedy defender for quite sometime. Injuries are another concern however. Puyol does need to be rested.

True and a defender like Chivu would be a good addition. Kompany will be another excellent choice. Let us wait and hope that we can sign some of the best defenders who are hoping to move on.

We will have to wait and assess his performance during the world cup. Good thing is that he is young and still improving. He might just as well move to europe after the world cup.

I think he has been overhyped by many, especially when the Real Madrid link came about. I do not think he is that good at attacking, on par with Belletti at best, also not a great defender. I prefer Maicon or Daniel to him.

We'll just have to agree to disagree. Although I do prefer Daniel as well...he is cup tied, and I think Cicinho gives us a better option than Ole or Belletti. Maicon I like, but don't rate with the other two, and don't think he belongs at Barca.

Not a bad choice but i think our management are building around Valdez. I really doubt we will see another keeper brought in to replace Valdez.

Personally i love players with flair and Deco is one of those players, this is one of the reason we play attractive entertaining football. I like him to stay with us.

I see us signing Henry guys. This after comments by our president. I think it is really true that sooner we will sign the Arsenal man

But first i want to see a world class defender either Chivu or Gallas come. Kompany too.

    He's already IN Europe (Belgium).

Anyway to other more immediate decisions, I'm short on CL-eligible defenders who can really help the team.

patrice evra was mentioned at some point over the summer on these boards, haven't seen to much of him but hear good things, as far as i know he's an LB. sounds like his speed is something we could use moving into offense and catching back to stop the counter attcks from crossing to center.

Since he is a regular with the US national team, i really think he will move to a bigger team and league after the world cup.

We need a dominant defender and i think he fits that.

Evra is rumoured to be headed to Liverpool, i doubt we have any interest in him. Or we can sign Sebastien Squillaci another Monaco commanding stopper, already a french international and he still has time to develop more.

But guys if we can get an experienced and solid defensive rock like Gabriel Milito then we have enough cover. The past seasons he has been one of the top stoppers in the primera and to me RM made a mistake when they failed to sign him some time back due to fitness concerns. Plus he is an Argentine international.

I believe he meant Europe as in Champions League or even UEFA Cup.

Luque can stay with the Magpies at least he will get to play regularly there. Here is a full back who would be helpful. Hertha Berlin`s Arne Friedrich. Already the best in Germany and an international and still young. He might as well improve the right back of our defence. Very promising with all qualities of a future great defender.

He's on my preliminary list of WC06's "Break-Out Performers". Definitely someone Barca should keep an eye on.

As for Chivu, correct me if I'm wrong but Romania hasn't yet entered the EU proper and he'd therefore count as a non-EU player, essentially the same problem Onyewu would have.

Really, Barca's top target should be Kompany, with Evra second. Forget Henry, forget Lampard, forget anyone else - just get those two and keep the guys already in the squad.

Perhaps in the Summer we should swap Giuly for Evra?

As long as Barca keep Santi and Maxi, I'd do that in a second. They'd probably have to sweeten the pot, though - maybe throw in Sylvinho and €2 or €3 million to make it work. Giuly, as nifty a player as he is, is approaching 30. Evra on the other hand is just 24 and is still under contract for two more seasons.

This is something Laporta should work damn hard to get done, and Kompany even moreso. If he gets those two guys in and keeps the rest of the squad, then simply put he will not have to add another player for the next five years.

EDIT: Also want to mention Anderlecht's other star youngster, right back Anthony Vanden Borre. He's Kompany's best friend and a great talent in his own right - certainly worth a look as well.
