Does anyone know anything about who Gariba Abubakari might be?

He is listed as playing against DR Congo on 27 March 2005 on Fifa.com but I've been unable to find any details about who he is or who he plays for.

Also does anyone have dates of birth for Daniel Quaye, Gabriel Issah, Godfried Yeboah, Bernard Dong-Bartey, Ablade Morgan, Eric Gawu, Joetex Frimpong, Louis Agyemang and Nana Duah?

    Many thanks!

Please ask your question on the Ghana Soccer Forum'. You'll get a quicker answer :D

    There's no Gariba Yakubu.

His name is Abubakari Yakubu. Awesome DM (Essien's sub) used to play for Ajax Amsterdam...now with Vitesse Arnhem in Holland.

    Yakubu

    Re: Introducing Ghana

I guess I am a bit skeptical. 18 players with more skills, power and speed then Donovan and Beasley? I won't believe it till I see it. That being said, I would not be too suprised to see Ghana advance. But if you are serious when you say this, then why aren't Ghana unbeatable in Africa and why haven't they made the World Cup before?

    Re: Introducing Ghana

Probably the biggest reason the 4-time African champs have never made it to the World cup is because of administrational ineptitude. Along with this, they have had stars with huge egos who could not coexist and this was to the detriment of the team. This is the first time in a long time that they have had a cohesive team oriented unit and as a result they dominated during qualifying. No team is unbeatable. Brazil lost to Mexico this year but would you consider Mexico a better team than Brazil? Overall, Ghana won their qualifying group by giving up only 4 goals in 10 games and scoring about 28? or so. I would consider that domination. Anyway they will not be a pushover and I will not be surprised to see them come out of the group either. (Hopefully along with the US)

I'm just wondering how if 18 of their players are better than the best US players in every way possible (according to african star), the world hasn't noticed yet?

I would call African Star's characterisation overzealous exaggeration. Most of the Ghanaian players are probably faster and stronger than Demarcus and Landon but that does not neccesarily equate with better. Some are better and others simply are not. I think the point he was trying to make is that there is this perception that the Ghanaian team will be a pushover and he was in his own way defending them. Ghana has a lot more players playing in the top leagues around the world and Ghanaians tend to get defensive when we are questioned about the quality of our players especially by a team (US) that most of the world still overlooks. The perception, however flawed it may be, is that American's are just a fit resilient team without a lot of talent. Therefore when excellent players like Beasley and Donovan who would be considered talents anywhere in the world are brought up as examples, people tend to bring up the fact that they have players who have the same, if not better qualifications.

    Re: Introducing Ghana

Or, for that matter, when the 18 players who are better than the top US players in every way possible will show it at club level, where Ghana's disorganized FA is not an excuse? Beasley was the second-leading Champions League goalscorer for a team that was in the semifinals last year.

OK, I agree with your sentiment, but some of what you wrote is just hubris.

18 players with more speed than Donovan and Beasley? No. Some players with more speed? Possibly. More size and power is easy to understand, as I have more size and power than any USMNT player (except maybe Onyewu), which ain't saying much.

Decimate Italy? No. Win a close game against Italy? Possibly.

It's ok, your enthusiasm about Ghana balances out the enthusiasm from US, Italian, and Czech fans.

Both Ghana and the US have something to prove at this WC. Let's hope they do it, and not at the expense of each other.

Ok, deciiva (or anybody for that matter), can you post the most likely Ghana starting lineup with the formation diagram the way folks here on BS usually do it? I haven't seen that anywhere yet. I mean like this:

    ------GK
    ----CB--CB
    RB----------LB
    ----CM--CM
    RW---------LW
    -----F---F

with whatever formation and players Ghana is likely to use.

Thanks for the video... that said, it would be nice to see a complete game, because watching goals only tells you so much.

    Re: Introducing Ghana

Revfan, Ghana is not unbeatable in Africa because there are many quality sides in Africa, unlike CONCACAF where the USA and Mexico are guaranteed qualification every time because of relatively weak opposition, in Africa there are fifty countries fighting for 5 spots. 1974 was the first time an African team went to the world cup in modern times and only one spot was available up until 1986 when two spots was made available and I think 1994 in the USA was when 3 spots became available to the fifty nations of Africa. In South America there are 5 spots for 10 nations and Europe has 16 spots but I am not complaining because sports is about economics and Africa cannot generate the big bucks that Europe and South America generates.

However given those stats and considering that Ghana had a massive recession in the 80's to the 90's, inept management and mercenary players trotting the globe you can see why Ghana struggled. In fact Ghana's success at the youth level also contributed to the slow progress of the senior team because the youngsters were gobbled up by unscrupulous managers in Europe some, where lucky to make it, some were not but most of them never went back to represent Ghana at the senior level and their development was not properly monitored and nutured. Unlike the US where players go to Bradenton, FL from U-14 and they are kept in the national team program, educated and monitored, while the Olympic Development Program monitors players on a nationwide scale and bring them into regional camps and national camps periodically in every age group starting at 13.

Ghana lacked that type of infrastructure and organization but things are improving rapidly and hopefully the GFA will not implode.

The other fact also remains that every WC many quality teams just don't qualify, this WC, Nigeria, Senegal, Cameroon, Egypt, Morrocco and South Africa did not qualify. There are about 10 top notch nations in Africa and about another 10 strong second tier teams that can cause upsets and make it to the World cup, teams like Mali, Togo, Angola, Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Guinea, Sierra Leone are all strong second tier teams that can get into a win streak at any time just like Togo and Angola showed this year. While Africa might not be the strongest confederation, in my opinion it is one of the toughest to qualify from. Most non Africans were surprised at first timers Senegal at the last WC, when they beat the defending champions but most Africans that follow African soccer were not surprised,, in fact some like me predicted it.

As far as the quality of the players, I will let you decide for yourself when you see them play.

I am actually expecting Ghana to score 9 goals in the first round. In their last three games this year, they did score 9 goals. Against South Africa(2), Saudi Arabia(3) and Cape verde(4). Ofcourse, the opposition in the world cup is much stronger, however, do not forget all these matches were played in the opponents home country

I don't have much to add other than I found this whole thread a wonderful read. I admit I know very little about Ghana but I'll spend the next 6 months learning and I look forward to seeing them play in June. This thread has been wonderfully informative and not one post degenerating down to trash-talk and finger pointing. deciiva especially -thanks!

    Re: Ghana

I think Ghana will be one of our most difficult matches next summer. Ghana is a very strong and athletic African team , and have some big strong players, that will keep our midfield running the entire match. I think Ghanas week point might be their defense and goalkeeping. Ive never really watched ghana play a full match, but thats just my opinion

I guess you do not know anything about Ghana Soccer. They have been very unlucky not to qualify for previous WCs. But they do have the players to make an impact. Perhaps, the best African side ever to appear at the world cup.

FYI Ghana has own Italy in other football competitions. They have never met in the Senior level, but olympics and youth soccer, Italy has not been a match for Ghana.

2004 Athens Olympics, Ghana schooled Italy. Ghana was up 2-0 at halftime and Italy came back to tie 2-2.

1996 Atlanta Olympics, I was at RFK when Ghana beat Italy 3 to 2. Italy had the best goalkeeper at the time in goal.

1993 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Japan, Ghana 4 Italy 1. Italy had Totti and Buffon. Ghana also had Sammy Kufour in defense.

This Ghana team can play with the best in the World. Look at what they did to Saudi Arabia in the Saudi capital recently. Ghana 3 SA 1. Ghana has not lost a game in almost 2 years

    Re: Ghana

Muntari might be one of the biggest transfers of next summer, Udinese is going to make a fortune. They are much more than a one star team.

Despite their defensive record in qualifying play goalkeeping is this team's weak link. The Czechs, Americans and Italians arguably have 3 of the top 5 keepers in the world. Whereas Ghana has a player on a second rate Israeli side. Ghana stacks up favorably in a lot of other areas against the other three teams, but they are clearly among the weakest teams in this tournament at keeper.
