Draw procedure and seeds will be decided and announced by the WC2006 organizing committee and FIFA on the 6th of December. It'll also be explained in a couple of minutes before the draw actually happens on the 9th.

I'm not sure how they did it exactly in 2002, but a possibility is to first draw a team name and than make another draw with the groupletters of the group in which they can be drawn.

Good question. I believe in that case they will "bump".

Using 2002's draw is a bit difficult to surmise because they had a couple extra rules due to having two host nations. Brazil and Argentina had to be in opposite sides of the draw, because they wanted a South American team hosted in Japan, and one hosted in Korea. The same with the non-seeded South American teams--at least one in each host country. Also Saudi Arabia and China had to be separated (and they made the unusual mandate that China had to be in Korea).

So with all those quid pro quos, I honestly don't remember how it worked, but I believe the "bumping" method was what would have been used if the situation came up.

Also, Mexico wasn't seeded before--that will be a new situation.

There's an account of the 2002 draw here, it might give us a few pointers to what can be expected?

I remember the China thing being a farce.

    Eldiablito:

I saw your mock draw on 11/17/2005, have you done another one since the rankings came out for November, or is it unchanged from the draw you did on 11/17/2005?

Also, you mentioned that in 2002 word sort of leaked out about who the seeds were gonna be before FIFA officially announced it, have you heard anything yet about the seeds for 2006...

I always thought this mock draw thing was a waste of time but I finally got bitten

    DRAW 1
A: Germany, Croatia, Cote D'Ivoire, USA
B: England, Portugal, Costa Rica, Japan
    C: Mexico, Sweden, Angola, Australia
D: Italy, Serbia Montenegro, Tunisia, Korea Republic
    E: Argentina, Ukraine, Holland, Iran
F: Brazil, Czech Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, Saudi Arabia
    G: France, Poland, Togo, Paraguay
    H: Spain, Switzerland, Ghana, Ecuador

Possible groups of death are Argentina's (or Germany's...?)

The conspiracy theorists are going to have a field day with Brazil's group, but there is also a 50% chance that the number one team in the world meets the number 3 or number 4 in the 2nd round with this draw  (I'm assuming they won't pull a France on us now...)
Other interesting potential 2nd round draws are
    - France-Switzerland (rematch of the qualifying round)
    - England-USA (no comment) or Portugal-USA (rematch 2002)
    - Germany-Portugal or Germany-England
    - Italy-Sweden (Ibrahimovic vs Buffon?)
    - Czech Republic-Holland (rematch number 7  )

    DRAW2
A: Germany, Switzerland, Cote D'Ivoire, Korea Republic
B: Italy, Holland, Costa Rica, Saudi Arabia
C: England, Czech Republic, USA, Angola
D: Spain, Serbia Montenegro, Tunisia, Ecuador
    E: France, Ukraine, Trinidad/Tobago, Japan
    F: Brazil, Sweden, Poland, Iran
    G: Mexico, Portugal, Ghana, Paraguay
    H: Argentina, Croatia, Togo, Australia

Group A looks like a hosts group this time around.
    Group of death = Mexico's?
I actually like this group for TandT

    2nd round
Germany-Holland (eternal rivalry) or Germany-Italy (somebody's not going to get their 4th WC)
    Spain- Czech Republic or Spain-England
France - Brazil (rematch 98 final)
Argentina - Mexico or Argentina-Portugal or Argentina - PAraguay

    3rd Draw
A: Germany, Serbia, Tunisia, Korea Republic
    B: France, Croatia, USA, Ghana
C: Mexico, Holland, Czech Republic, Japan
    D: Argentina, Sweden, Togo, Iran
E: England, Switzerland, Cote D'Ivoire, Ecuador (I swear this wasn't rigged)
F: Brazil, Poland, Angola, Saudi Arabia (ditto)
G: Italy, Ukraine, Trinidad and Tobago, Paraguay
H: Spain, Portugal, Costa Rica, Australia

    Group of death = Mexico's
    2nd Round matchups
    Germany - USA
    Argentina-Holland or Argentina-Czech or Sweden-Czech or Sweden-Holland (rematch euro 2004)
England-Poland (rematch qualifiers) or England Brazil (not likely)
    ITaly-Spain, ITaly-Portugal, Spain-Paraguay

As a matter of fact, yes. I conducted another mock draw after the November rankings were released. This time I had Concacaf and Asia combined in one pot (including Australia) and Africa with Paraguay and Ecuador in the short pot (only 7 teams). This is my penultimate mock draw--I'll do one more once FIFA releases the draw procedure on December 6th

    A
    Germany
    USA
    Ghana
    Switzerland

    B
    England
    Australia
    Ivory Coast
    Czech Republic

    C
    Italy
    Tunisia
    Costa Rica
    Ukraine

    D
    Argentina
    Iran
    Togo
    Serbia & Monte.

    E
    Mexico
    South Korea
    Portugal
    Netherlands

    F
    Brazil
    Sweden
    Trinidad&Tobago
    Angola

    G
    Spain
    Ecuador
    Japan
    Poland

    H
    France
    Paraguay
    Croatia
    Saudi Arabia

December 6 is when FIFA is scheduled to announce it. What I meant wasn't that word leaked out--but that FIFA released the info earlier than the scheduled date. Just look at fifa.com or fifaworldcup.com daily to see if they announce anything.

Thanks Eldiablito I'll look for your mock draw after FIFA releases the seeds and draw procedure.

Group A looks a lot better for the USA than some other mock draws I've seen posted (I saw one with Brazil, Czech Republic and Ghana), we should be able to come out of this group and maybe even get some revenge for 2002 with the Germans:

    A
    Germany
    USA
    Ghana
    Switzerland

I hope not. I'd love Brazil to get stuck in a "Group of Death"

    Brazil
    Netherlands
    Czech Republic
    Costa Rica

used StymieG's above script http://home.comcast.net/~stymieg/Draw06.htm from to get a very friendly draw from the US.

    Schedule: Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Argentina

Group A: Germany, Paraguay, Ivory Coast, Croatia
Group B: England, Ghana, Iran, Sweden
Group C: Mexico, Tunisia, Portugal, Australia
Group D: Spain, Japan, Trinidad & Tobago, Czech Republic
Group E: Argentina, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, USA
Group F: Brazil, Togo, Netherlands, Poland
Group G: France, Angola, Ecuador, Serbia & Montenegro
Group H: Italy, Ukraine, Costa Rica, South Korea

  16. How is the USA getting clobbered here? Which seed would you prefer playing instead of England? Which S. American team would you prefer playing instead of Ecuador (please review Ecuador's away record before responding)? Which non-seeded Euro would you prefer playing instead of Croatia?

I'm not saying that an easier group can't be conceived, but it can get MUCH WORSE for USA than England, Ecuador (at sea level) and Croatia.

I would rather be drawn into England's group than any other seed's. I am not saying USA are better than England, but at least several of our players are intimately familiar with the EPL. I don't want Brazil under any circumstances. I don't want Argentina plus two Euros. I don't want Germany at home. The other options are Spain, France, and Italy. I'll take England.

As for the second Euro side, I don't want Netherlands, Czech, Ukraine, Sweden or Portugal. I'd be okay with Croatia, Serbia, Switz, or Poland, but honestly none of these are an easy three points.

As for the third side in our group, I would gladly take any African side, Saudi, Australia or Ecuador. I think we'd be okay with Paraguay, Japan, Iran (avenge '98) or Korea.

Group F: Brazil, USA, Ukraine, Czech Republic

actually the weakest seed are mejico (but you cant play them). from the three euro seed that you have mentioned i would take france but i dont care which seed we get as long as the remaining two will be easy opponents. which non seed euro would i like to see play us? the weakest - since poland cant play poland (were considered the weakest euro team, but dont forget weve beaten serbia recently, playing 10 against 11 with a goalie that was making a debut, though it was only a friendly) so id like to face serbia. croatia is a very strong team, just look at some of their results.

as for equador i have to agree, they're the weakest team from south america - saying the usa would got clobbered i had in mind croatia and england, beacause be realistic - england is light years ahead of you and croatia could be one of the surprises.

you say non of the non-euro seeds that you have listed is easy 3 pts. so tell me - is any of them 3 pts at all? maybe the swiss. i would like to avoid swede, portugal or netherlands as well

i think you should not underestimate japan, korea and the african sides. maybe not all of them are strong but id like to see you play cote d'ivoire or ghana - not saying that you would lose but you dont have to win that clash either. as for the rest - for you and for us it should be a walk in the park.

My final draw until the pots are known. I did the standard grouping...

    Asia, Australia, CONMEBOL
    CONCACAF + Africa

(Sweden was the 9th team after the other 8 were drawn, and was then drawn into Mexico's group when the names of Mex-Bra-Arg were put into one pot, per the rules that each should have a 1/3 chance of getting a second Euro team in their group)

It happened that no geographically-forced "bumps" occurred in the drawing, either for CONMEBOL or CONCACAF.

    Group A
    Germany
    Czech Republic
    Iran
    USA

    Group B
    Italy
    Trinidad & Tobago
    Switzerland
    Paraguay

    Group C
    France
    Ivory Coast
    Serbia
    Korea

    Group D
    England
    Angola
    Ecuador
    Ukraine

    Group E
    Mexico
    Sweden
    Croatia
    Ghana

    Group F
    Brazil
    Holland
    Costa Rica
    Australia

    Group G
    Argentina
    Portugal
    Tunisia
    Japan

    Group H
    Spain
    Togo
    Saudi Arabia
    Poland

Opening Match: Germany vs. Czech Republic
    USA opens vs. Iran
Group of Death: Group E--Mexico, Sweden, Croatia, Ghana
Group of Laugh: Group H--Spain, Togo, Saudi Arabia, Poland

No suprise, but it looks as though Brazil is "destined" to win the World Cup again.

    Look at this pattern...

Using Italy's win in 1982 as the starting point.

    1982 - Italy

1978 and 1986 - Argentina (the World Cup before and after 1982)

    1974 and 1990 - Germany (2 World Cups before & after '82)

    1970 and 1994 - Brazil

1966 and 1998 - England and France (Both Host Countries)

    1962 and 2002 - Brazil

    1958 and 2006 - Brazil in '58 and '06?

It's an interesting and "unique" pattern.
Though, the games MUST be played :)

I posted this elsewhere (https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?p=6840474#post6840474), and thought it was useful for this thread:

There is a FIFA organizational meeting on Dec 6, I believe they will be deciding on Seeds and Pots (sounds interesting) during that meeting.

There will be an announcement of the procedure for the draw (the announcement should contain the seeds and pot designations) on Tuesday Dec 6 (during the 7am US Eastern Time Press Conference).

The draw is on Friday Dec 9 (with the broadcast of the actual draw starting at 2:30pm Eastern).

    From: http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/051117/1/5a4d.html

    ---------------------
Appointments, meetings, press conferences, the official FIFA banquet, a media party with the theme "A time to make friends in Leipzig"… all these are in store for guests of the final draw in the week from 5-9 December. The first FIFA delegates, representatives of national associations and members of the press will be flying in from around the world to the Leipzig Congress Center from 9.00am on 3 December, when the accreditation booth opens.

The most important body in world football will also be convening in Leipzig – the FIFA Executive Committee. The procedure for the draw will officially be published on 6 December after a meeting of the FIFA Organising Committee for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, chaired by Vice President Lennart Johansson.

Main media events (subject to changes):

    Monday 5 December:

Opening of the accreditations centre (8.00am) and media centre (12.00pm)

Press conference for the FIFA Club World Championship (3.00pm)

    Tuesday 6 December:

Meeting of the Organising Committee for the 2006 FIFA World Cup (9.00am – 12.00pm)

Press conference held by the Organising Committee for the 2006 FIFA World Cup (1.00pm)

    Wednesday 7 December:

FIFA Marketing & Television Partner Workshop

    FIFA Executive Committee meeting

Press conference with the Executive Committee of the Organising Committee of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany (12.00pm)

"A time to make friends in Leipzig" party in the Moritz bastion (8.00pm)

    Thursday 8 December:

Stadium tour for media representative (10.00am – 12.00pm)

    FIFA press conference (1.00pm)

    Friday 9 December:

Extraordinary assembly of the German FA (DFB) in The Leipzig Opera House (11.00am – 1.00pm)

Media briefing for TV and radio (11.00am – 12.00pm)

Media briefing for print and photography (4.30 – 5.00pm)

    Final draw welcome (8.00pm)

    Final draw live broadcast (8.30pm)

    --------------------

knowing the draw procedures on Dec 6 will give the mock-drawers some actual hard/published facts on which to base their scenarios. currently, not knowing the seeds and pot alignments, there are 2-4 reasonable ways things can be set up for a mock draw.

a lot does depend on who the 8 seeds are and how the 3 pots outside of the seeds are established. those questions will be answered on Tuesday. The US will know on Dec 6 which pot they are in, and therefore will be able to say with certainty who (beyond Mex, CR and T&T) will not be in their drawn group of four. Again, this is all assuming that Fifa will stick with the pot system and the traditional rule of not being grouped with a team from the same region (outside of the UEFA two-team exemption).

If Mexico (or the US) is not seeded and the seeds are BRA, ARG, and 6 UEFA nations, then I think it makes sense to place into one pot the 4 Concacaf and the 4 Asian teams. In that scenario the US would know that they would be in a group with one of the seeds, a non-seeded team from UEFA and one from the pot of AUS, PAR, ECU, and the 5 African sides.

Again, it is just speculation until we see the seeds and pot designations, which will be published (should Fifa stay on schedule) on Dec 6.
