second time i heard of this, and i swear, i live in a widespot on a one lane rd. I also do the rural postoffice thing, and my zip worked out fine. Of course it looks like i live at the post office, but hey, it's close enough for govt. work.

    - You know there's a town called Santa Claus. And you've been there.

My family lived in Evansville and Newburgh back in the early 70's, when my dad worked for Mead Johnson. Scary stuff with the tornado; it actually went through my old neighborhood.

Oh no! Was anyone you know hurt? That's just so scary. I love hurricanes but am terrified of tornadoes. Guess that's why I want to fly into a hurricane and would NEVER go chasing tornadoes.

I don't know anyone there anymore; we moved back to DC in '72.

One of my memories of living there was a time when I was no more than six years old, sitting on a friend's roof and watching a tornado go by, probably only 2-3 miles away. Weird.

Hey, the whole deal wasn't just Santa Claus, Indiana was it? Wasn't it an amusement park called "Santa Claus Land" and it had a postmark called Santa Claus, Indiana, where you could write letters to Santa and Santa would write back to you? Can't recall it entirely and, perhaps, it's all for the best. I do remember petting reindeer, however.

How about the haute cuisine side dish of Indiana -- Baked Green Bean Casserole made with fresh green beans, a can of Campbell's mushroom soup and topped with those French Fried Onion crispy thingys.

Tornados are very scary. Luckily, none of that stuff never came all that close to where I grew up.

yes, I did, I just used my real name (what was I thinking) - it stuck me a ways East from my house. I used 20175. I guess, even though we live 3 miles from each other, tops, we have different zips - which explains why a post office 20 minutes from me delivers my mail instead of having to go pick it up from yours :) I'm pretty sure even Purcellville's PO is closer to me than Leesburg - but if the PO was efficient, stamps would only cost 30 cents :)

What good is a map that doesn't acknowledge all zip codes?
Granted, I am happy it doesn't put the pin on my exact "street", I don't want too many of you to know where I live exactly :D

    You got it. Truly bizarre.

Yeah, that goes perfectly with my memories of early-70's Indiana , along with burnt-orange shag carpet, pea-green kitchen appliances, and wierd wrought iron decorations.

They seemed to be a common occurence in Newburgh. I remember we had regular tornado drills in school.

And I used to go to various parts of Indiana every summer to visit relatives....Richmond, Ft. Wayne, Cherrubusco (?), Mishawauka, etc. My family's heritage is actually from English. Will have to ask mom about tornadoes down there.

    Near Washington DC -
Apparently I live in a back parking lot of the Orbital corporation a few blocks from my house. I wish I knew what they did there.

My alter ego lives across the street. Apparantly I have to go to a friend's house to use the internet.

You know you are from/lived in Indiana when you know a massive amount of odd town names and the stories behind them.

    For Example,

Gas City. Apparently there was supposed to be a massive natural gas field under it and there was this huge city that was designed to be built above it...however it turned out to be about 1/1000000000000 of what was predicted and the only thing that was built was that massive water tower that you see driving by on the interstate. Oddly enough I believe they have a medium-sized concrete business there now.

    Lets see what else:

Go FRENCH LICK someone in NAKED CITY just a TOAD HOP from ROACHDALE. But watch out for GNAW BONE, he might LOOGOOTEE you into the CONCRETE.

Halcyon On and On is one of the coolest techno/electronica songs ever made. :D

--I believe I actually saw Orbital back in the peak of the good ole DC rave scene.

O.K. -- Here's some more. You asked for it.

You know you're from Indiana when...

You don't know what a "Pacer" is and have never even wondered.
You know that "Mellencamp" went to "Cougar" and back to "Mellencamp."
You know what a "Cutter" is.
You deny the Colts were ever in Baltimore.
You know "The Dunes" are in Indiana (not Egypt).
You still can't understand why Knight got fired.
The last "g" is silent in any word ending in "ing."
You've never met any celebrities. (Actually, James Dean, Kurt Vonnegut, Carole Lombard, Weeb Eubanks, David Letterman, Oscar Robertson & Johnny Wooden were all from Indiana, but they all got out . . .)
You've seen all the biggest bands ten years after they were popular.
Down south to you means Kentucky.
You end your sentences with an unnecessary preposition. Example: "Where's my coat at?"' or "If you go to the mall, I wanna go with."
You've ever had to switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day. ("Stoke the
fire" and "fling open the windows" for the older version).
    You drink "pop."
You know what "cow tipping" is.
    You shop at Marsh.
Damon Bailey was your childhood hero.
The Wabash River is the "biggest body of water" near your house.
You know several different definitions as to what a Hoosier really is.
People at your high school chewed tobacco.
To get to school you had to drive on a gravel road, a road with several right-angle turns in it or if you were really lucky, over a covered bridge.
People in your neighborhood, really, REALLY like NASCAR.
You actually know what the CART versus IRL debate is about and have taken a side.
To you, a raccoon is simply a "coon."
The vehicle of choice in your area is not a car, but a pickup.
You are a BIG John Mellencamp fan.
To you, tenderloin is not an expensive cut of beef, but a big, salty, breaded
piece of pork served on a bun with lettuce, tomato, pickles, and mayonnaise. (Editoral Comment: Worth repeating from the last series of Indiana jokes because of the Yum Yum factor. -- Tallguy).
Oh, I almost forgot -- Indiana University, the alma mater of Brian McBride, Pat Noonan and Dema Kovalenko!

I stand corrected. Must have gotten thrown since my cousin's kid has a big poster of McBride in his Crew uniform over his bed and, since my cousin is a huge I.U. soccer fan. Oh, the humiliation of being exposed as a know-nothing on B.S. (Of course, that's par for the course for me!)
