Well that's that, congrats to the 2005 MLS playoff champion firefan2001, who tops off an extraordinary postseason with a Weekly Cup-sharing minimal bet on the final.
His big bet on Chicago in DC made him pretty much uncatchable, but saving only a small bet for the finals also proved wise. He is the only player to finish with positive perf, and he did so with room to spare.
Also tying for the Weekly Cup is DamonEsquire, who lands 2nd place overall in a photo finish with defending champion Jose L. Couso, prevailing by virtue of superior perf in the final.
Our third co-winner is Quango, who brings home some hardware in a trying postseason.
Qdog and NoSix round out the weekly top five with bets of 2 on the 90 minute draw.
paulo finishes #4 overall, just .25 out of 3rd and well ahead of our final top five member,
quamster, who manages to hold off soccertom.
tab5g, jlo, Bulajacket, and by a narrow margin, MouseyTongue, round out our top 10.

Well, this concludes the season and I want to thank everyone for your kind words of support. Knowing that people are having fun keeps this task enjoyable.
As always, please post suggestions for improvements. This oughta be a good thread for it cuz there won't be any predictions.

    Dred:

    First, excuse the whining.

In mid-October, you posted "So once again, week #2 games are 90 minutes for the sake of WPL."

I took that to mean week 2 games only, so I don't understand why MLS Cup was scored as a draw. The issue in the first round was that you had the second game, and then you might have an overtime after that game even if one team won. That issue only applied to the first round. Here, there was only one game, and LA won. There's no reason I can see to cut it off after 90 minutes.

Of course, I would benefit by getting you to change your mind, but I would feel the same about it even if I bet on NE.

i also think it would be worthwhile if we could perhaps see a final "unofficial" table where things are calculated using an LA 1-0 victory.

i have no problem with the current table (where the draw after 90 min is used) as official table, but it could be educational to see how such small details can affect a leaderboard.

i'm already set to put this great season behind me and am looking foward to the start-up of the new season in the spring.

thanks to dred for his excellent work.

first of all, dred is the greatest. King dred!!!

second of all, i agree. i bet 7 on LAG and expected a big score. instead, blah.

one would figure the final would just be the winner, and that's that.

i guess this was discussed before and i didn't get it.

anyway, it was another fantastic year. i'm already looking forward to next year.

have a great off season everyone!! :)

Somehow I knew changing the rules after I initially posted them would be a mistake. I can see how my later comments could be interpreted differently than intended.

Yes, I did specifically mention week #2 games as being 90 minutes only, but I was emphasizing week #2 because it was the upcoming week not because it was a special week.

In the same paragraph I mentioned that I didnt want to go "halfway" with an overtime system (ie having some overtimes count and some not) because I was and am confident that switching to that midstream would have confused even more people. In the initial post the next week I reemphasized that "overtime and PKs do not count in any matches". I suppose that could have been interpreted as "any matches this week".

Anyway, assuming nothing changes between now and next year, it sounds like people want to have overtime count but only starting in the conference finals so we'll go with that unless people don't want that. Once the week one thread is up the administrator (presuambly me) should keep the rules locked down.

I'll post the alternate standings shortly, but I should probably consider the original ones "official" (FWIW) because I'm sure that at least some of the players interpreted the rules as I intended to represent them. (And because redoing the final standings for anything short of math errors feels uncomfortable). Bit of an anti-climatic ending to the season, ah well.

    Great job dred!

I hope you can do this again next year. :)

Come to think of it, I think I'll skip the regular season and go directly to the playoffs. I seem to do much better in them! ;) :D

Are you kidding? A bit of controversy always livens things up.

Great work, dred. Sorry if I came across as ungrateful.

Not at all, I'm glad people care enough to be disappointed. I'll know it's time to retire when nobody bothers to complain about anything. I remember sending you a grievance at least once when I misunderstood the scoring system.

That's the only mistake I saw all year. The rules going in should not be changed. Otherwise, great effort! Much appreciated.

    Now, here's my next prediction:

7 Damon Esquire firefan2001 (I hate the Fire, plus Damon is fun to read)
6 paulo Jose L. Couso (Be warned Jose, never disappear again...never!)
2 guamster tab5g (Guamster picks up the tab)
11 jlo soccertom (Easy choice, unfair advantage) themrs., the best wife-nurse in BigSoccer. Thanks for bringing jlo back.
3 BulaJacket MouseyTongue (MouseyTongue just sounds gross)
    5 dred Saeyddthe (Can't go against a hall-of-fame administrator)
    9 BenC1357 Tactics (Wizards fan)
8 IASocFan Revolt (Another Wizards fan)
10 Qdog equakesfan (I do have an ego)
1 Flashman NoSix (San Diego--Phoenix...Phoenix--San Diego; sounds all the same to me)
4 OGx3 Quango (I finally got you on a prediction league, Quango)

Thanks all, it's been great. We'll talk in March. :)

True. But I take heart in my Clavijo-like attitude in throwing my big picks out in the conference finals like Clavijo threw out 5 forwards onto the field. Unfortunately, there was poor organization on both our parts, and I went down in a ball of flames.

Anyway, the playoffs don't mean anything. Move to a non-playoff, single-table format :D

Thanks to dred for all the hard work. QuaNGO

Here are the alternative universe results, if we go by the rules we intend to go by in the future. (ie, overtime goals and PK victories count, but only starting in the conference finals).
Cognrats to jlo for the big win, and to the other top 5: FlashMan, BenC1357, tab5g, and silver medalist Jose L. Couso.
BenC1357 leaps an astounding 8 spots and cracks the final top 10.
