I see Ryan Pore bid on his own jersey....I was just thinking that he scored his first pro goal in that shirt and it would probably mean a lot to him.
I seriously doubt it. It's not a slag on Keller, just a statement that he's had so many of them that one in a 2-0 win won't register much beyond this weekend.
Auction update (9/5/05, noon) Fans have so far bid a total of $21,791 on MLS jerseys! Freddy Adu leads the pack with a $1110 bid. 6 other MLS players have received bids of $500 or more on their jerseys. 9 players remain relatively good buys with top bids under $200. The bidding remains open until 12 September. http://auction.mlb.com/cgi-bin/ncom...ept=&wl=33072944&sort=&accept=&gallery=&team=
A quick total of all the jerseys in the auction is $67,847.71. Not a bad total at all considering the auctions still have one week to go. I wonder how high it will get to in all.
I like this idea, but I feel that many of the bids will max out. I, for one, only have so much money I can give to anything (charity or for memorabelia). It's a shame that they didn't release all the jerseys (they still could to give it a boost), and that they never had them signed (as we've seen with the USMNT team, this really increases their value, and thus the contribution they/we are making to the cause) and finally to hit people for sales tax in a charity auction? That seems really wrong, particularly as we're trying to help. Anyways, moan over....back to the bidding...
Current ranking of MLS jerseys: 1. Freddy Adu 2. Justin Mapp 2. Clint Dempsey 2. Matt Reis 5. Ben Olsen 6. Jaime Moreno 7. Cobi Jones 8. Todd Dunivant 9. Ronnie O'Brien 9. Brian Mullan
Auction update, Fri 9/9: 4 MLS jerseys have received bids > $1000: Matt Reis: $2000 Freddy Adu: $1170 Justin Mapp: $1010 Clint Dempsey: $1010 23 MLS jerseys have received bids between $500 and $1000. 17 MLS jerseys are still relatively good deals with high bid <$300 http://auction.mlb.com/cgi-bin/ncom...ept=&wl=33072944&sort=&accept=&gallery=&team=
From mlsnet.com: "Major League Soccer players, as well as members of the U.S. National Team and Mexican National Team, are contributing autographed game-worn jerseys that will be auctioned to raise funds for the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Players competing in the U.S. vs. Mexico World Cup qualifier in Columbus, Ohio on September 3 and all MLS games on September 3 and 4 will sign the jerseys and donate them for the relief efforts.
I think Matt's mom is going to regret selling that time-share in Florida to get this jersey when it's all over.
Is there a reason behind this? I know of people not wanting a personalized signed item (To Johnny, Good Luck, Kasey Keller) but why doesn't a signature elevate the value all around?
I think that's more in referance to sports cards. I do know that when those are signed their value goes down. Other memoribilia however I'm not so sure. Usually it doesn't make that big of a difference. There's not the need to keep the article prestine and in mint condition like cards since they're already used. Having them signed by the player that performed the sporting feat, I'd think, would be a bonus. Have a player sign the ball that he hit a record breaking home run with, or example. Having DMB sign the jersey that he wore in the game in which he scored a goal, against Mexico, and booked the US' ticket to the '06 World Cup is something I sure as hell would love to have.
I have a bad feeling El Tri fans don't even know about this auction. That would be a shame, since if they did, they could get jerseys of their favorite players and support a good cause.
Most jersey collectors I have spoken with just don't want it signed. I cannot give a reason why, I guess that is just the way they want it for whatever personal reason they have -- but if it were me and I had the game-worn jersey I'd want it signed, but alas to each their own I guess.
I have the high bid on a couple of jerseys and was thinking of wearing them occasionally. I wonder if there are people besides me who'd rather have the certificate of authenticity signed by the player than have the jersey itself signed.
Did my post violate any TOS? Just because you miss the context of it doesn't mean it should be deleted.
Kreis and Szetela fans continue to keep bidding open on their jerseys. The auction is closed on the other jerseys. Kreis is now at $2910 Szetela at $1090
