The play was choppy at best. The result was great, but perhaps predictable. What I was struck by most in viewing the classico was a candidate for THE GREATEST STREAMER THROW EVER. Watch footage of Beasely's goal very carefully. You can see this comet tail starting to develop behind Mexico's goal in the microseconds before the shot crosses the line. Given velocity parameters for a roll of crepe paper, it might've been thrown even before the ball left Damarcus' foot. The streamer clears the goal, drops and rolls out around the six. It is hilarious to view repeatedly, in slo-mo, with beers. WARNING: Fans of El-Tri may not find it so hilarious.
I agree... Mine didn't quite make it to the field but whoever did throw it/them I give mad props to. ESPN has a killer shot facing the goal of the play... the streamer is CLEARLY in the air and unraveling as the ball is leaving his foot... it might have been a millisecond after it left but the result was nonetheless the best ever. I definately second that nomination. The best part was how po'd Sanchez continued to get throughout the game because of the streamers... first he took care of them himself. After a few he got po'd and then threw a temper tantrum to the grounds crew to get them out of the six.
I need to practice streamer throwing for my next game. My one throw nearly hit someone in the head on the field, I was aiming for the goal.
hahahaha me too, I threw them about two rows, my friends were consistently getting them on the field though.
Funny you bring this up: Long after the match, long after a beer at a jammed packed and throbbing O'Shaunnessey's and another two across the brick street at Gordon Biersch, I made it back to my hotel for a late night capper at the bar, which had two widescreens airing ESPN in unison. Five minutes after settling into a barstool and sipping the beginning of my last beer on the night, ESPN tuned into highlights of the US-MEX match. The second highlight was Beasely's perfectly executed goal. Just after video showed Bease curl the ball squarely past the outstretched fingers of a very one Dirty Sanchez, you can see already in mid-air a streamer come from out of no-where, as if the person throwing KNEW the outcome, that da Bease would net a clincher. My first thought was, holy Fcuk! "Someone tossed that thing before Bease even kicked it!" Amazing. Simply amazing.
for those of you that downloaded the game, it comes in 13:41 at the second half. the streamer is from somewhere around row 3-6, behind the goal and a little to the left--in other words, the perfect view, just under the television camera. The streamer isn't in the air before the ball is kicked, but is in flight before the ball crosses the goal line. Whoever it was might have released the streamer at the same time the ball was kicked!
Sorry to get off subject, but... you can download the games? Where? Is there an archive? As for the streamer, it was a thing of beauty.
Go see the link from "View from section 138" and you'll see the streamer was indeed in the air before the ball hit the back of the net.
I remember seeing it land after the goal from some of your videos, but I didn't realize it was among the best ever. I feel special for having witnessed.
After reading this thread, I had to go back and watch the part of the game again. That was a very nice streamer throw.
I recall thinking that the streamer was almost thrown a bit too soon. But when everything went well I did say that it was one hell of a great throw.
Greaat trow, I trew one (white) just before Rawston's Goal but it hit a foot short of the net, in some replays you can see it hitting the ground as he scores. To make it more difilcult for the grounds crew and anyone else from reeling in the streamers next time I'll will cut diagonal slits in the streamers so as to break apart when they are pulled of the net. Next time.....
I believe this is Beasley's goal (ball bulging the left side netting). You might even be able to pick out the person who threw that streamer... in a red USA uni and yellow cap... I dunno.
how bout it! I loved how he looked at the streamers, looked at the people behind the barricade and pointed at the streamers.. (insert overused Mexican stereotype here)
Who Is The Man In The Yellow Hat? Look at the photo above. It would appear our streamer thrower has been caught in the act -- OF AWESOMENESS. That thing is WAY out there - and half the players haven't reacted.
What the hell is this about throwing Cleveland Steamers? That's grotesque and has no place in the NT forum! I'm sure Segroves is behind this deviltry. (edit: Oops, sorry I see now it says "streamers.")
There was a second streamer thrower/spitter behind the grassy knoll.... And when Beasley's shot when in, the side netting went Back and to the Left.... Back and to the Left.... Back and to the Left....
