It is some kind of weird joke. Why would Kanye comment on the US national team?

For those who don't know what I'm talking about, here.

This whole thread has got to be a joke. I refuse to believe that any rational adult living outside of a group home could subscribe to the views in that first post.

Just in case, let us recap. The United States is a racially heterogenous country. If your players feel compelled to root for teams composed entirely of black players rather than one representative of their own country then maybe they have a problem. There are a number of African Americans on the Nat team and they contribute mightily. Jeff Cunningham is a bubble player, there's nothing insulting about him being subbed on late in the game.

Oh, and one other fvcking thing. When you talk about needing better athletes on the team and getting rid of the white boys with the funny names like its the same thing...

    That's racist.

    Think about it, a$$hole.

I'd like to see Cunningham start on Wednesday. I was looking forward to seeing him get at least 10-15 minutes of play time as a late sub against Mexico. I've never been able to watch a match he's played (accursed job!).

Hopefully this will change on Wednesday. :D

If you were white and wrote this about another race you would be considered racist. But, I guess some moderators think this is acceptable.

nice post tmack. They had a article in Sports Illustrated that said Bruce Arena could field a All-African American team if he felt like it. Yes, this game should be put in front of more black youth because they happen to be excellent athletes as well and can bring more to the talent pool of American Soccer but then again I feel like the best players should play. By all means, DeMarcus Beasley and now Oguchi Onyewu is great for future black players. Then you have Cory Gibbs and Eddie Johnson who will also be starters. You have Cunningham who will play off the bench. You have Freddie Adu in the future and you have Eddie Pope who might get pushed out of defense by two other black players. Although I would really like to see all three on the field, if it was possible, that would be a force. But, I think the American soccer team is a fair representation of our country. I mean out of the total talent pool, it's about maybe 40 percent white, and then about 30% black and 30% latino. We didn't have those numbers in the past. I think they will continue to grow as well. Their is no doubt in my mind that Onyewu and DeMarcus were the two most talented players on the field last night. But, hey dont take away from the harvard types, they can play to. I just figure the best players play. I figure the starting lineup in 06 will have about 4 or 5 black starters. This is similiar to England.

France just doesn't have any good white soccer players. But, to be real Adu isn't ready yet and Cobi Jones and the rest just are not national team material. Gibbs, Onyewu, Beasley, Johnson, Cunningham, Pope.. Are all going to be solid contributors though. And four of them I would consider the best talents.

And I love what you said about Poland. Oliasdebe(a nigerian who plays for Patathinkos a greek side) just got called back up for Poland. He's a solid player to.

hey maybe Arena could field a all-black side against Guatemala or Panama. why not? It would be great to actually do that for american soccer and the loyal black players and fans to the game. I think that would be pretty cool.

Yes, but Bill said he should be shot regardless of his color, so it's OK.

    Or something...

I can't believe we have to have this discussion. Especially in the wake of one of the biggest U.S. Soccer victories in recent memory.

As young 20-something African-American who loves soccer (its really the only sport I follow), I'm both thrilled that TMACK is getting more inner-city kids into soccer, however I am also very concerned by this attitude.

Its funny you mention Jamaica, too - I was at the USA-Jamaica game at RFK back in '97, admired the passion of the Reggae Boyz support in the stand, but WOULD NEVER EVEN THOUGHT FOR A SECOND ABOUT CHEERING THEM ON! If you're an American, watching your country with such stakes on the line, you root for your country. Period. End of story. Jeez, Id hate to be watching a game say Germany v Cameroon with a white guy and hear him say "Boy I hope that they beat these coloreds who dont look like me"

Anyway back to the concern - teach the players to look a bit beyond the superficial aspect of skin color. Try it, its a great way to see the world. The Bruce does the same, thus he's consistently picked the best players (not best white/black/hispanic/fuschia-colored players, just best squad period) to get our boys to the dizzying heights that us long-suffering US soccer fans could only dream about just barely a decade ago - heck, less than that (France '98 anyone? Me and my buddies were thinking hell we're skipping final exams to watch this??? :p )

Show them some international matches too - no need to stick to modeling their game on African qualifying matches (not there aint quality down there), but go ahead and try that Cruyff turn, a bit of fancy dribbling like C. Ronaldo, or even (dare I say it) bend it like beckham - theres a whole country (and world) of football out there, no need to raise false racism alarms and suck the enjoyment out of this wonderful sport, the best in the world.

    Yours in the game.

What a stupid post. Someone should lock this topic on the basis of sheer stupidity. We shouldn't even be determining anyone's ancestry, just pick the best damn players. And idiots like the "black soccer coach" who started this thread should pick another sport to follow so we don't have to hear this total bullcrap. I'm sickened this guy follows for the same team I do.

Actually, most of the Brazilian players are "Melado" (of mixed race). But I agree with you entirely that a great racial mix is always beneficial.

Also, I think if there is any coach out there that recognizes the skills of black athletes it is Arena. And Donovan and Convey are just as fast and athletic as a lot of black athletes. Lewis and Berhalter on the other hand... J/K… sort of! Regardless of race though, every player brings something to the table that makes them an asset to the team. I think Arena has been pretty sensitive to making sure the team is diverse and allows as many races as possible to be represented. We could really go down the list from Pablo Mastroeni to Brian Ching and even Carlos Llamosa who was once a very active contributor. I understand the concern about seeing more black players, but I think even though everyone wants a player they feel they can relate with, Arena has done a descent job of making sure the best players are on the field for the given scenario.

If we told Bruce Arena that he had to have certain people on his team because they represent a certain color, it wouldn't be the U.S. National Team:

It would be CD CHIVAS USA.

Wow. This is the most RACIST post I've seen here on the boards. Race does not, NOR should it, play ANY FACTOR WHATSOEVER in selecting players. Player selection should be based SOLELY on current form and fitness regardless of demographics.

Shame on you not only for your attitude, but for passing it on to your players! It sounds like you are ignoring skills and keying in on an attribute that doesn't matter. Are you also teaching them to cheer only for Gooch and Johnson and withhold applause for Donovan and Lewis?!?! And you're teaching OUR kids?!?! Sad ... and truly pathetic.

I guarantee that Arena bases his decisions on player form, fitness, and game situations. To complain about putting Cunningham in the game with only a minute to play is complete nonsense. It was the right move at the right time. To take time off the clock and also give Cunningham a run out. Did you see Jeff's face right as he as coming on and after the game? Pure joy and elation. Maybe you should focus on passing THAT on to our children instead ...

Hmmm. You know what? The overwhelming majority of America, white or otherwise, doesn't care about soccer. A lot of them think soccer is a foreign sport played by guys with long hair and Hispanic names. Maybe a black guy named "Oguchi" with dreadlocks isn't such a good idea.

Oh, wait. I can't say that. That's racist.

See where I'm going here? Can we close this thread now?

A little offtopic (which is good), but will Sepetmber 3, 2005 be remembered as the day Damarcus Beasley displaced Landon Donovan as the "face of American soccer"? Donovan's disappearing acts for the USMNT, MLS, and Leverkusen are getting pretty embarassing for people of all races.

Surely you jest - have you not heard of Freddie Adu? Arent the blacks kids aware of Freddie?? Isnt he a role model like Tiger Woods? Also I suggest that you spend 5 minutes researching the reasons why EJ started to play soccer, or Beasley, or Buddle. THAT will give you your answer. But where I lived the black kids played soccer because EVERYONE played soccer, it wasnt a question of race so don't bring race into the equation.

Some more observations - what you seem to be saying without realizing it is that the black kids are racist which I find terribly scary - they dont support Americans but only black players even if the balck team is the team playing AGAINST the US! Another point, you fall into the racial trap of thinking that blacks are superior "athletes", unlike white "midgets". I suggest that soccer is a game of BALL SKILL and not size etc.

are you kidding me, now people are demanding more black people in soccer. im no racist but come on now, this is getting ridiculous. black people are always complaining about theyre precentages in sports. if i am not mistaken the majority of basketball and football players are black, and thats in two of the highest paying sports leagues in the world. I got a better proposition for you, if you want equality in the representation of ethnicties in american sports, how about going with the demographics of this country. i believe 10% or less of the country is black, so if you want more equality, how about having only 10% of the players in the US's sports leagues being black, im sure you are totally against that, and so am i. if you are good enough to play a sport and you should play it regardless of race, but to demand a general manager of a team or a coach or whatever to get more black players, or any other race...if one ethnicity should complain in US soccer, it should be the latinos, the latinos in my experience of youth and college soccer get short changed, i find it difficult to see so many latino youth be such skilled at such an early age in comparison to white teams, yet when it comes down to recruiting for college and so on, there seems to be a huge gap
