It made no sense selling off Simao on the last day just after they had finally signed a number 10 and another forward especially with no one else coming in to replace him.

    http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/0500liverpoolfc/0100news/tm_objectid=15919795%26method=full%26siteid=50061%26page=2%26headline=we%2dwill%2dcompete-name_page.html

"The deal for Simao broke down after a hostile reaction to the news in Lisbon. "It's never ideal trying to do business on the last day because things can go wrong and then there's no room to manoeuvre," said Parry.

"Yesterday was a strange day. We had an agreement with Benfica but when the story leaked there was such a strong reaction they felt they couldn't sell. Simao was sitting on a plane waiting to come for his medical, but Benfica called it off. In a way, it was similar to the Steven Gerrard situation here when Chelsea were interested.

You think? Selling off the team captain, one of the faces of Benfica, after giving the fans some hope when they just finished bringing in re-inforcements would've been the end of LFV and Viega. All stuff that's been said here already.

I am gonne for a die on a wine tour in southern ontario and i come back to Greek player named (Kanasta Janavem).

Well i think Juvy said it best, we should all be happy that a portuguese team added value and not on-loaded.

Karagounis is a fantastic little player. Never gives up, has some slick ball handling, a mean shot.

The best part about him is his tenaciousness. You HAVE to foul him to get the ball off him.

Apparently Benfica backed out because of pressure from the fans. Who the heck runs this team? Also, some guy on the commnetary sectio of this link I provide mentions something about how Simao in his official site is already complaining and he wants to get PAID! Can anyone find or confirm this. Meanwhile here's the story according to Record: http://www.record.pt/noticia.asp?id=682522&idCanal=11

You guys are creating a Tsunami in a cup of water.

Benfica is looking at adding Robert Pires in the near future, everybody knows his father is a huge Benfica fan and he wants to play for Benfica before he retires. So don't be surprised that in December or next summer Simao will leave and Robert Pires will come in.

It didn't happen now because they couldn't guarantee a player in such short notice.

Don't try to turn this into a Benni or Liedson Gate.

Chops, of course the fans don't want Simao to leave, specially when there wouldn't be anybody coming in for a replacement. Considering our bad start this season, if you add Simao leaving LFV and JV could kiss their positions goodbye. Benfica is democratic instatution not a dictatorship.

the fans don't run the club, they are not on the inside, they don't know or understand the urgency Benfica should have in closing the deficit gap that the club has at this point. I would have applauded LFV for selling Simao under these circumstances and not because Benfica would become a weaker team. Let's face it, 18 million is a lot of money, I truly doubt it any other team will offer even 15 million in the near or distant future for Simao.

The president does answer to the fans, and socios. Since we are the ones that pump money into the team, with gate money, merchadise etc.

I think LFV did the right thing for now. If Liverpool had approach Benfica last week and made a 15 million offer, then i would say take it, because we would still have 1 week to get 1 or 2 good replacements, like Pires and somebody else.

Pois eh verdade!

Tribalfootball is not the best source of information.....ask Forca.

The deal was 12 million + Cisse, he refused, then Benfica asked for 20 million and we got offered 18 million, either way the offer was 18 million.

If you are implying Cisse wouldn't come to Benfica, he also refused Monaco and Marseille, since he wants to play in England. Which is fine.

It's not like a guy that plays for Gil Vicente refused to come, Cisse wants bigger stages and i can't blame him for that.

On a side note, CIRV FM (toronto portuguese radio station) had a show today about which team picked up the best players, and the commentator (sporting fan) said that Porto picked up 2 of the best Argentinian players, Benfica picked up Karagounis and Miccoli from Top Italian teams, and Sporting....two guys from Braga. He wasn't happy.

    Don't believe all you see.

Believe in half of what you read, believe in half of what you see, you put it all together and you have reality.

Japan or Quatar are the only places you'd excpect any washed players to go.

Is that what you feel for your captain.

It will be diffcult for Benfica to sell Simao during the winter tranfer window to Liverpool...Liverpool can't use him in the CL, Benfica need him more than Liverpool, Liverpool is good enough to challenge for 2nd in the league without him, I think a deal may be struck in the winter, but he won't go until the season is done, but definitley before the WC'06, since I doubt he'll play more than few minutes a game there.

If the sale of our captain comes to fruition I really hope they're working on a replacement as we speak. Whatever happens from now until the winter transfer will dictate Benfica's next move. By then we will know where we stand with respect to the CL and the defense of our title.

It'll be more difficult to replace him after all he is our best player. I don't think selling him will be a problem
