Almeida (has same last name as me :D )is a great player. The type of striker Portugal needs to make a great WC06.

They offered what PdC wanted but the 9 millions release clause was valid only between 1 and 31 july of each season :D
I think we need McCarthy but i also would love to see Hugo Almeida getting more opportunitties but the truth is McCarthy is the only striker we have who can assure us at least 20 goals a season...

Not if he has a "sumarissimo" or playing crappy so that he can show how unhappy he is. How many games did he miss last year???

I saw this on Maisfutebol and i thought it was kinda cool.

Porto has the youngest team in Portugal, benfica is a close second with 1 day apart :D

    F.C. Porto, 24 anos, 10 meses e 11 dias (idade média)
    Benfica, 24 anos, 10 meses e 12 dias

    Sporting is 5th.

    Boavista is the oldest.

I understand your point but we all know if wasn´t for him we wouldn´t had finished in second in the league and reach the last 16 of the CL...
How much money we made from that...more than the 9 millions PdC refused yesterday...
He was crap but yet crucial and our best striker in our worst season of the last 30 years.

To me its obvious he wants to leave, and sometimes is better to loose a star then to keep comet.

Benfica has done the same with Simao, the difference being that Simao has been told the next window of opportunity he will be able to go.

Now Benni was told if a 9 million offer comes he will go, then it shows up and he still stays, that is wrong.

I don't understand why you think that, in Simão's case, it was ok to turn down the offer, but in Benny's case you think it was wrong

The same principles apply: we would be hurting the team's quality, since we wouldn't be able to replace a player of Benny's influence in such short notice! And besides, Porto doesn't even need the money all that badly! So we can afford to keep him.

He doesn't like it? Well, next time don't sign a 3 or 4 year contract! Sign a 1 year contract. Or a 6 month contract!

Want to moan about it? Go ahead, rot in the B team and see where that takes you!

Benny has been told that Adriaanse counts on him. Nothing more needs to be said. He is a professional and should act like one.

I think Adriaanse nailed it right on the head:

"If he wants to go to England he'll have to score 20 goals. Then Arsenal or Manchester Utd will pick him up. He's gonna have to start talking with his feet not with his mouth. No more talk, no more agents. He has to play and work for the team. When the season is over we'll be able to say "well done, good luck in England".

I know my comment sounds bias, but the reason why i think is different is that PDC said he would let Benni go for a 9 million offer, and when the offer showed up he refused the trade.

Now, if Benfica gets an offer for 15 million in december for Simao, and they don't let him go, i would say that is wrong as well, since he was promised an opportunity to leave once the next opportunity arrives.

I don't really know if that's what happened or if it's simply what the media is saying ;)

IMO PdC only changed his mind after realizing that he wouldn't be able to find a decent substitute for Benny.
I haven't read any criticism from West Ham to Porto's behaviour in this deal either (In fact they admited that "this is one of the contingencies of making deals in the last day of the transfer window"...)
Therefore I think PdC did the right thing in putting our sporting chances, before our financial interests.

And McCarthy's hopes and dreams of playing in England don't bother me one bit either.

PdC job is to look after Porto's interests, not to answer to every player's little whims.

I don't disagree, and the point you are making is the same i am making in regards to Simao at Chopsoccerdude.

Sometimes you have to put the clubs sports interested ahead of financial gain.

But PDC shouldn't have said that i will let him go for a 9 million offer.... and that you can't deny.

This Benni story will be a long and painfull one.

But if your president thinks that was the best move for club and fans then we have to accept it.

lol what did he expect? how can he honestly be surprised by the state of affairs he finds himself in? I'm shocked that he would say such things when he still has to play there. The transfer market is closed in most leagues...

    My questions are:

Didn't he know their leagued sucked?
Didn't he know is cold there?
Didn't he know the league doesn't have enough exposure?

    What he knew was:

I will make alot of money.
I will make alot of money.
I will make alot of money.

Yup...he only saw the $ signs.

He was quoted as saying, "I don't like country, I don't like the league, and I don't like climate". Apparently, he didn't take his long-term career into consideration. Because he's still got 5 good years left in him.

He should be playing that out in Spain, France, or back in Portugal.
The guy is still an awesome player...we see that with our NT.

When I saw this I couldn't believe he would be that careless with his words. He must realize that they spent 16 million euros to get him and that he has months to play in Russia before he can be transfered to any league able to put a decent offer in for him  I'm sure the fans there are going to love this estrangeiro even more now  This is like Carvalho speaking to the Portuguese media about not starting at Chelsea. This is 2005, you can't say these things and expect your words not to reach other countries.

Yeah, no kidding! To say you don't like the climate...well that's understandable! To say you don't like the league...well that's bad enough. But to say you don't like the country of Russia...in which you'll be playing for a while in...that's idiotic. Maniche has to be brighter than that, especially as you said, Dynamo were nice enough to shell out 16 million euros for him. Costinha should of given him a cuff in the back of the head.

I wonder what he was thinking....what am i saying, since when does he think.

How can you not know what Russia is all about, why do you have an agent for? Do some research before you sign a 5 year deal.

This guy has done the worst thing for him and his family, diss the team, country, league and the fans that he will have to face at least for the next 4 months.

    Good luck.
