Has anybody else heard about this movie? I've heard bits about it for several months, that it was a British comedy about womens' soccer, but not much else...... The trailer had a scene where the main character talks about meeting a WUSA scout, and the next scene shows a clip of a Freedom game that she is watching on T.V. ...........
It's gotten a fairly decent response here in Australia, and a cult following at that. The reviews have been good. I can't speak for the rest of the world, but it's out on VHS and DVD here. I'm planning on hiring (renting) it as soon as possible, after my wife and I complete our moving process. Cheers, William
Eagerly anticipating Now that you mention it, the trailer mentioned it had already been released in the rest of the world and was a pretty big hit. And of course, WUSA needs all the attention it can get............ I wonder if the league is much more well-known (not popular or watched, just known) in the rest of the world than in the U.S. .......
According to an advertisement for this dvd: "Bend it like Beckham is the fantastic smash hit comedy that asks: Who wants to cook Aloo Gobi when you can bend a ball like Beckham? Football-mad Jess is 18, smart, beautiful and can bend a ball better than any boy she knows. She's set her heart on playing for a top women's footie team, but there's one problem: her strict parents want her to settle down with a nice Indian boy and learn how to cook. Flying in the face of her parent's disapproval, Jess and her best mate Jules make name a for themselves in the Beautiful Game, but then love rears its head for them both in the form of their fit (in more ways than one) coach Joe (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers - Velvet Goldmine). Jess has a tough choice - her best friend or a gorgeous bloke. What's a girl to do?"
I first heard about this movie last summer. I saw some pics of it. What caught my eye was a picture of the main character standing in front of some Mia posters. I honestly thought it would be out by now.
It comes out in the US on March 12 I think, only for a limited time. You can order it from Amazon. It's a pretty good movie.
March 12 release in LA and NY. While it won't be playing at the local twentyplex, I'm sure you can find it at whatever theater in your area that shows foreign films.
In a recent NT gettogether...was it during the Gold Cup...somehow several of the players like Chastain got to see this movie.
"Bend it Like Beckham" was discussed on Ebert & Roeper's most recent show. They were talking about movies at the Sundance Film Festival, and Ebert gave it his "crowd-pleaser" award, or something to that effect...
Very funny movie "Two thumbs up" It's a very funny movie, and I got a copy from a Ebay seller. If you plan on buying from Ebay make sure you can play it on "US" DVD and VCR players! http://search.ebay.com/search/searc...y=MetaEndSort&ht=1&query=bend+it+like+beckham Good Luck
West Ham United: One Team That Courts Its Neighbors This is somewhat related- a good article nonetheless... http://www.nytimes.com/2003/02/04/sports/soccer/04VECS.html?8hpib
It's about an Asian girl who tries to take up soccer in England - which is very rare. The story is about trying to find a boyfriend for her gay mate, while she tries to play soccer. It's a rubbish film and didn't do much in England, but will do well in the girly teen flick area.
Have you even been to England!?! It was one of the biggest films of last year, gained huge publicity, quickly acquired an cult following and is the biggest, most successful British film since 'Bridget Jones'. I don't know anyone, male or female, who hasn't seen it. (And they all loved it)
Very funny movie! The only part of your post that's right is, it's in England! No Asian girl and No lookin for gay boyfriends.
I just got my tape today!!! So far I have seen the opening minutes. I am waiting for "Friends" to be over tonight so I can watch it.
South Asian refers to those from India, Pakistan, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. I believe that for some reason, people in England call all folks who have South Asian backgrounds "Pakistani." (Don't ask, I'm not sure why) I believe, however, that this particular character has roots in India.
Among all movies in Britain July 2001-June 2002, it ranked 19th at the box office. Doesn't sound like a flop to me.
