Way to incorporate you're name 'Passiton'!
I think Figo had no choice but to pass on the torch! The decision wasn't his ultimately, but that of Scolari, due to the emergence of two players.
It was a realization that came inexplicably. First, Deco was selected to the team by Scolari, and at the same time, Cristiano Ronaldo bursted onto the scene. Two previous players, who were the heart and soul of the team, the offensive catalysts, the 'feared one's [Figo and Rui Costa], were eclipsed by two young upstarts. And, Rui's time came to an abrupt hault, while Figo, still lurks in the shadows - the shadows of Deco, and the 'white pearl' - Ronaldo.
Figo may just be delaying the inevitable. I of course, admire him greatly, but you either get 'on the ball or you get on the bus'.

Luis Figo his a player and can adapt to many positions on the field. To say that they can't be on the field at the same time is wrong. He proved it in the Euro, and now in RM. In RM he used to play mostly on the flanks, now Beckham has moved there, and Luis moved in to the No. 10 position, and well. BTW Scolari has come out to the press expressing for Luis to return. Players need to understand that their time for that particular role is done. Portugal has lots of up and coming players to move on.

I don't entirely agree. Portugal is not that strong on the wings with Simao and Boa Morte that they could afford to loose a player of Figo's ilk...Deco is an attacking midfielder and didn't eclipse or displace anybody at the Euro...he was already the best at that position going in...Rui Costa, yes he saw his time reduced because of Ronaldo as did Simao. At Figo's age he realized he had to commit only to the team that puts food on his table, playing for both NT and league would be too much on his aging legs. You can't just be a NT player only and expect to keep pace and stay in good game shape, obviously...
That being said, if there is a player that can just hop aboard the NT a few months before the WC as league play takes a break, I believe its Figo. He can still be an effective, focused player and welcome additon to the NT without playing the qualifying games that would wear him down, which really wouldn't be very good for our NT or Real Madrid, now would it.
Scolari would be crazy to turn him down.

Pauleta had a decent year for PSG last season. The joke vote is Pedro Mendes. Good player, but he was only a regular for FC Porto in half the games. Not too mention the guy wasn't even at Euro.

He's going to want revenge from two years ago. Heres what he had to say about that.

“Não vivo no passado. Se assim fosse, já tinha abandonado o futebol porque ganhei tudo. Vivo no presente e o que passou, passou. Estamos aqui para nos apurarmos e se houver um ‘penalty’ marcarei sem problema. Oxalá haja muitos a nosso favor...”

Should be a barnburner today. I'd imagine it'll be tight...like the AC-ManU game, possibly 1-0, 2-1 max. None of this 7-2, 4-2 stuff.

Figo was also named Real Madrids player of the year by his teammates last year. The year before too I think.

With the loss today, and most likely loosing La Liga. Perez will overhaul team this summer. Who will stay, whowill go? Persoonally they don't deserve Figo.

yeah. i think both figo and rui costa were confident enough that the portugal team will stand. so they hand it over to the next generation. which is good. but i dont mind seeing figo for at least one last time at the world cup. since he said he was taking only a break.

Imo it was good that Figo has left madrid. We all know Figo was benched more because of the coaches ego than due to his performances. I am really hoping Inter and Real meet in teh Championsleague. Here's to Figo giving us another good 2 years of football.
