    Eski may be out permanently

During this weekend's Dulles Cup I did talk to some folks from DCU's front office. There seems to be growing pessimism that Eski may not come back to the game at all. Eski has been sent to a specialist in Pittsburgh for another opinion.

Unfortunately, his condition is not getting better and, similiar to Ross Paule, is moving towards a career ending decision.

That's terrible news, I still hold optimism, but it's not looking good is it.

Say it ain't so! It would not suprise me but I really hope that even if he's not back at all this year, that he can come back someday. I was thrilled when I saw him warming-up a bit and running before the LA match...only to find out days later that he'd regressed. BUMMER! We are rooting for you Alecko!

I'll be the first to admit I never really appreciated what Esky did for this team, I was always one of the fans who wanted Adu or Q in there instead. But he showed his worth last year on and off the field. I talked to him once last year and was a really cool guy he didn't seem bothered at all to carry this conversation with a total stranger. I can't even imagine Esky not being able to play again, the kid seemed to have a good and possibly great future ahead of him with club and country. I hope the guys ok, I'd hate to see him be forced to stop doing what he loves most, especially at such a young age. Hopefully things work out well for him, we'd all love to have him back.

Wow, terrible news. I guess the silver lining is that at least he won a championship and got the MLS Cup MVP. Better then what Paule had to go out with.

That's just awful news. He's an all-around good guy. I hate to see this happen to anyone, but especially someone who has as much promise as he does. Like everyone else here, I hope he not only recovers, but is also able to play again.

This would really suck, I just hope he can come back next year. Maybe a little more time off can help him recover. I just hate to see such a great person and great player have to end their playing days end do to an injury. MAN, I don't even have my Esky jersey yet from MLS gear yet and I ordered it at the beginning on the year!!!!

Get healthy Esky, anyway you can.

Obviously, this is a terrible rumor/second-hand news. On so many levels. He's a good kid (even if he didn't play for DCU). He's represented his country. I think the T-shirt for Nicole Megaloudis was a very classy thing for him to do. I've always heard he's a great teammate. He really could have bashed Hudson after his rookie year and he didn't. He's a son of an immigrant (American success story). He's worked hard to get where he was. He's dad was a good guy (except when he was kicking Johan Cruyff in the shins). And oh yeah--he was the Championship MVP on my favorite team. On so many levels this is a tough story.

I'm no doctor nor a specialist in head injuries. That said, once you've had an extremely long recovery like this one--even if the migranes and dizziness stops --you are so much more susceptible to head injuries. At some point you just have to walk away b/c as bad as this one has been, the next one could be worse (I'm assuming he recovers enough to be able to run and play in the near future).

Let's assume in the off-season the headaches stop, the dizziness stops, he can jog without getting lightheaded or woozy. Even if he gets the okay to resume training, I have to question if its in his best interests for him to try to play again. It's not that 3 months off is unrecoverable. It's that the rule of thumb with concussions is that if you start to have problems, they get progressively worse (longer recoverly time, more memory loss, more risk of permanent damage).

We have a lot of people on this board with connections to the team. I think it would be a good idea if someone could set up a way for us to send some sort of get well thing to Esky...nothing fancy, maybe a collection of well wishes, brief messages, whatever, so he knows we haven't forgotten him and his contributions to the team (2004 obviously, but if he hadn't been putting it all out there for the team in 2003 too he might not have his problems now) will be remembered even if he can't come back.

Still hope this is not true.

At this point, his health is more important than anything else. Although I really hate to see him having to give up soccer, I'd rather him not playing if his health is at risk.

What a shame to see such a nice kid go out like this (if it's true...).

That's a great idea! He really deserves it. I don't have any connections ot the DC United FO but I'm definitely in. So, who ever decides to organize this, PM me and I'll help you with it. If no one else really wants to organize it, I'd be willing. I'll be out of town all this week but could get to work on it after I'm back from the WQC next weekend. Regardless, I think this is a must do but may be a bit difficult since most of their games are away for the first few weeks of September.

I'm on it. I'll have a card for everyone to sign at the next SE tailgate, like we did for Petke when he got dealt, and we have the cash to do some other stuff if there are some othe ideas. Anyone?

It's times like these I wish we still had Petke. A "Crime Of The Century - Revenge Is Coming" t-shirt would've been good last night.

Like others, I hope Nick (the poster not the goalie) is wrong.

Health comes first and I'll keep my fingers crossed that Esky can eventually return to what we love watching him do.

Maybe we can have a banner of support at the RSL game (something cheerfully supportive, not too gloomy)?

Sad for Esky but it wasn't the result of the one inexcusible hit by Reis.

It's a culmination of hits to the head, which is sad just in itself for such a talented young athlete. Given the background you'd think that eventually it would have happened on the field when Esly would have gone up for a header -- it's the way Paule finally took a hit <a very simple challenge for a head ball> and has since been ruled to never play again.
