Just wondering why the US-Mex qualifying match will be played in Columbus which has low capacity for a classical match such as this, where everywhere we play them, it doesn't matter how big the stadium is, has always been sold-out , why not Soldier Field, Giant or even coliseum ca, doesn't USSF need money ?
We never have home game. Since we never have it and get used to play in a crowd against us, why don't we play it in Coliseum ? let those people spend money for us.
I went to Salt Lake to see the US/Costa Rica match. That was DEFINITELY a home game. Of the 40,000 or so there, probably 30-32,000 were American fans. It was awesome, honestly, especially since my only other "cap" was USA / Honduras in Albuquerque which 9,000 people went to. Other possible home field advantage cities: Boise; Billings, Montana; Minneapolis; Anchorage, Alaska. ~Justin
Anyplace vs. Costa Rica is going to be a home crowd for the US because there aren't a lot of Costa Ricans living in the US. No disrespect to SLC, KC, or Portland, but there's no way any of those places gets the same percentage of US support vs. someone like Mexico or Honduras. The only place in the US that we wouldn't be able to get a pro-US atmosphere against CR is Giants Stadium, and that's only because all sorts of Mexicans, Salvadorans, hippies, and various other assorted foreign and Greenwich Village cretins would show up to cheer against the Evil Yankees.

I assume you weren't at the last US v. Mexico WCQ at Crew Stadium in Feb. 2001? I was. Find some of the crowd photos and the quotes from Arena and the team. It was a home game.
I really wonder is this would be a home game though. It's on Labor Day weekend, local soccer fans wouldn't sell out the place, it's going to get zero coverage from the local media due to Ohio State playing in Columbus on the same day. Traffic into the city by air will then cost more. Most hotel rooms will be taken. For hardcore fans, this all isn't a problem. But there aren't many U.S. fans that way.
The last time we played them in Columbus the place was a sea of red. I got chills watching it on TV, and the crowd were totally in the match and all over the Mexicans. What was even better was that the match was in February and the Mexicans were lost in the cold. We won 2-0 and it was the only home qualifier in recent memory where we've had lop-sided support in favor of the US, let alone against Mexico who always seem to get their fans in the buildings everywhere else. The Columbus choice was a no-brainer. In soldier field you would get a 50-50 crowd at best. I was surprised that Foxboro in 1997 was about 60-40 in favor of the US. There were a lot of Mexicans up there too.
When you talk about the sea of red, is that because our away (i.e., non-white) jersey at that time was Red, so the majority of the people wore red to the stadium? I just went online to check out the current US jerseys, warmups, etc. and our only options are Navy or White. Do we expect to see a sea of Navy this time? What should everyone be trying to wear to have a sea of one color?
To bad it's not as cold as last time we played Mexico in Columbus. IIRC - they didn't even come out to "warm-up".

Beautiful! I wonder if there is any way we can get that on the Jumbotron in Columbus the day of the game. Less than a month and I am ready for this Funny thing happened: I work with Mexicans who were looking for tickets. They tried to buy some on Ticketmaster website yesterday and were surprised that they couldn't find any tickets. They are going to Clumbus to try to buy them the day of the game. AND they;re wondeirng how I got mine !!

His movement on the ball in the corner when he dishes that incredible pass to Earnie is just fricking awesome. I was on the field shooting that game for Andy Mead's ECG magazine. Unfortunately, I didn't get pictures of the US team celebrating when they scored. I was too busy high-fiving the players on both goals. They both happened right in front of me. I will never forget that game. Froze my ass off, but wow, what a night!!! I still get goosebumps thinking about it.

Nope. People wore red, one, cause it was cold and many people had red OSU jackets. And two, USA fans have been encouraged to wear red for about 10 years now. And the fans in Columbus know that.
I met a nice Costa Rican couple at the Gold Cup final who were cheering for both teams, as long as the soccer was quality. And there were a TON of latinos chanting USA at that game.
